Prime Day Deal = raising the price to MSRP, then showing a 20-50% discount.

    Makes for a useless feed.

Nobody paid $1415 for a Makita LS1219L. The 44% lower price of $794 is barely 5 bucks below normal price.

There are a lot of legit deals, you just have to know your prices. I double-checked most of these, and the ones I didn’t I already knew by heart.

I’ll check again for new deals in a couple of hours.

Appreciate the work cursting a list. The deception by Amazon flooding so many fake ‘list price’ comparisons should be embarassing to any real marketing humans. It appears as if they just gave up to a handful of malicious programmers who know that they can increase sales temporarily with fake numbers.

Do you know any contacts that could respond to the claim of ‘shenanigans’?

CamelCamelCamel is over their API limits, so can’t track prices there.

There’s no one to talk to there.

The last time I did was a few years ago, and I frequently complained about the garbage no-name products flooding and crowding out the Black Friday deal lists. They said it couldn’t be helped as the placements were paid-for.

You gotta know your prices. It’s worse when media sites push “deals” on tools that are the same price for what seems like 364 days out of the year.

Doesn’t Amazon always benchmark their prices against MSRPs that no one actually pays? I def agree that it makes for a lot of annoying extra work to suss out the good deals, just saying that it’s not a phenomenon exclusive to Prime Day (also Prime Day tends to have a lot of deals that are actually pretty great)

Relatedly + unfortunately, it also seems to be SOP for most other big retailers. Home Depot definitely does the same thing.

I’ve also noticed that Home Depot has started including Vevor products in their deals of the day/week. I share Stuart’s opinion of Vevor so I find that kinda disappointing.. oh well.

Yep, like that Dremel kit was selling for $37 for years, until they bumped the price back up a couple months ago and then dropped it to $39 for this sale.

Sometimes it does not provide the full picture, unfortunately. This page – – shows the lowest price of $221.74. But in late August this nailer’s price was $203.89, and then in early September it adjusted to $206.61, but with a -$31 coupon. Thus, the lowest price this year was actually $175.62, but you will never know that by looking at the CamelCamelCamel page.

Lots of deals involve clickable coupons or money-off offers, or are too short-lived to show up on price trackers.

Use CCC for rough price trends over time, and check the price manually when doing research.

Please don’t include direct camel links. Mentioning them is fine.

You can connect an Amazon wishlist to CCC to get price drop alerts. The site can be a bit clunky and syncing the two accounts doesn’t happen immediately, but I’ve caught some good deals this way.

        The Makita LS1219L miter saw?

        $794 at Amazon
        $859 at at authorized dealers.

Price was never $1400, but $794 is still discounted. That said, if you’re looking to buy that miter saw, Acme’s 15% off $149 takes the price down to $730.15.

The Fluke GFCI tester, I bought for 11.39, versus 11.98 right now. Amazon mysteriously will not show me certain orders on my account to compare prices, despite the page showing the exact date I bought it. I had to go back through old emails and calculate from the order shipment total minus sales tax.

It’s a great tester for under $15. I’d recommend it for the beep indicator, since kids don’t have a radio to plug in as a noise-maker for circuit tracing.

So, it’s gone beyond just fake pricing. Amazon is blocking order lookups too.

Could be a bug – mine showed up just fine.

I got 2x Dualie flashlights for $25.73 each, and the Fluke tester for $15.97 with $5 coupon at checkout, so $10.97, vs $11.98 now.

The same Fluke model is $21.28 at Lowe’s right now, and about the same elsewhere. $22.45 at Zoro.

Pardon the language, but there is all kinds of pricing BS and marketing tricks, all the time. Getting past all of those layers is a challenge, even for me despite intense deal and promo scrutiny for so many years.

Was the Fluke lower priced in the past? Yes.
Is it lower priced today than it was recently? Yes.
Is it a better deal than you can buy it for from other retailers right now, yesterday, or maybe a week from now? Yes.
Is this the best price it will be this season? No one knows.

Should you buy it? That’s up to you.
Should you wait for a holiday deal, Black Friday deal, or Cyber Monday deal? At best you might save at most a dollar more based on historical pricing. At worst this is the one and only chance at the best deal of the season.

There are a lot of things one could buy right now, and many one should *not*.

I don’t know what’s going on with your order history, but I’m not seeing any problems with mine. I have seen some glitches in the back end, maybe some of their servers are overloaded, who knows.

Yeah, I wondered about back-end problems feeding the order history page. That’s why I started clicking on email links to open orders directly. But, I have no access to orders from October 2023 sales week through end of January 2024….all the sales and holidays prices.

As an admitted Amazon addict, I’m _pretty_ sure I made a few orders during that time period.

It certainly makes it hard to make an honest evaluation.

        • Farkleberry

          Oct 8, 2024

Clicked on an Amazon link for Bosch centering bits, it did show I’d bought it before. When I click on order details, it shows the price of the other items on same order, but the bits just say, “deal of the day”.

I was able to calculate they were about $15 after discount vs $20 here. Perhaps if I’d paid $21 the price would be shown.

Remember the good old days when Amazon was a behemoth squashing mom and pop with low prices and free, fast shipping? Now they they have all kinds of deceptive features, expect you to pay for returns on their errors, and pay extra to avoid ads. Call it progress, right?

I remember Friday and weekend deals. Used to stay up until 3am and snag all kinds of great tool deals. That’s how I got my first Milwaukee hole saw set and Hitachi/HPT drill kit.

        Oct 9, 2024

Amazon sales in general. They increase the prices in the months leading up to the “sale” and then the sale price is usually the old regular price. That’s just how greedy Scamazon works. I’m sure you listed some decent deals, but those Craftsman hex wrench sets were $15 recently, the Wiha insulated screwdriver set was recently $28 unless I’m confusing it with a different set. They just know most people are too stupid and careless to pay attention.

A lot of price changes come from tool brands. I asked a retailer about this once, and they said they don’t get reimbursed for promotional discounts unless they raise prices back to MAP/MSRP first.

A lot of companies play pricing games.

You also can’t look at Amazon’s prices alone, you have to check market prices.

          Amazon has Mitutoyo 600mm calipers for $288.59 – https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W9H926/?tag=toolguyd-20 .

These sell for over $500 at other dealers. When interest dips, Amazon’s algorithm adjusts the price to make it more enticing. They’ve got 2 in stock. If someone buys it, the price will the shoot right back up again and the cycle continues.

The Craftsman hex key set WAS $15. I bought a set in June. $18 wasn’t bad. Right now they’re $25 at Amazon, Lowe’s, and Acme Tools. Maybe they’re going to be discounted again for the holidays, and $25 is its in-between “was” pricing.

For some of the deals above, I don’t include prices because some of them change constantly throughout the day. If you see something like $20.41, later that day it might be $20.92, or $19.84. For the others, I include hard-set prices, such as $17.99 or $249 for future reference.

Mass media sites have been hyping up Amazon’s Milwaukee tool discounts, while you can get better pricing at authorized dealers on a lot of them.

Sorting out good deals from the perception of good deals is not easy.

They increase the prices in the months leading up to the “sale”

If the price is higher for several months, and then it’s discounted during a promotional period, that’s a sale.

When products are one “regular” price during lower interest/demand periods, and discounted for higher volume seasonal periods, that’s a sale.

A price of a 12V impact kit went from $99 the other day to $178. It’s going to be $99 for the holidays.

One retailer has the Dewalt miter saw discounted from $649 to $549, and another has it for $649 but bundled with a folding stand.

The brand of standing desk that I bought always has promotions and “free accessory” selections with a value of $XYZ. I just want the desk, not the floor cushions, table mats, or task light. I’m guessing that the freebies push the price higher but also provide for some flexibility. They can reduce or change the bundled inclusions rather than raise prices.

          That’s the way things are.

The best thing to do is educate people on how to best analyze deals, discounts, promos, and similar, e.g. – https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/how-to-analyze-cordless-power-tool-deals/%3C/a%3E .

There is a lot of cynicism around the holidays, some fair and some not. “I bought the previous model for $10 less 7 years ago!” is not helpful, but I see a lot of it.

          I try my best, e.g. https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/wait-for-holiday-modular-tool-box-deals-2024/%3C/a%3E .

*Not* covering sales and promos is also an option, but i) it provides value to readers, ii) it brings people to ToolGuyd, and iii) it provides reader-controlled and advertiser-independent revenue for ToolGuyd, and iv) it balances out against the uninformed hype from mass media “shopping experts” who repeatedly promote the terrible bargains.

I took one of my kids to a home center around Father’s Day. They pointed at a price sign and said “wow, it’s a lot lower now.” I told them the “was” price in that example was likely to be fictitious.

When I discuss deals at depth, I try to analyze how much savings you’re really getting.

If you know what would be helpful, I’ll all ears.

Just so we’re clear I’m not trying to talk trash about you or anything you’re doing, really just whinging about how much worse the deals get every year.

“If the price is higher for several months, and then it’s discounted during a promotional period, that’s a sale.”

For example, if the 12v Bosch drill/impact kit is $99 January-July, $180 August-September and then back to $99 in October but now it has a big red “-44%” next to it, should I perceive that as a sale price? It seems more like dynamic price gouging akin to Uber surge pricing (which will most likely be coming to retail soon).

          • Stuart

            Oct 9, 2024

I know. This is just a really messy topic, and it comes up every year in different ways.

A new Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2-tool combo kit is flying under the radar at retailers, 3698-22CX, with a price of $449.

A brand new combo that first appears in October is 99% going to be a holiday promo. I’d bet it’s either going to sell for less than $449, or it’s going to be a “buy this, get a free tool/battery promo.”

List prices or valuation claims are going to be messy. Some are going to believe it blindly. Others are going to rant about how it was never $449.

The only thing that matters is whether the promo – whatever it will be – is a good value.

Competition is FIERCE between retailers, brands, and everyone in between.

I didn’t post about many tool deals in the months since last year’s holiday season because they never quite went away. The M18 Fuel 2-tool combo never bounced back to its regular $449 for long. Even now it’s $399 plus you get a free battery.

Some of the $99 tool kits remained at the same price for most of the year. So will they really be “on sale” starting later this month? Not really.

Will they still be good values? Absolutely. As I said above, the Dewalt OMT is a good deal, but I wouldn’t race to buy it with this deal.

The DCS356D1 kit, on the other hand, is rarely deeply discounted, and each time the duration and quantity are limited.

Every year there are complaints about the deals not being very good, or that retailers are playing pricing games. A good part of that is true. But it also doesn’t mean “deals” aren’t a good value.

Like I said, it’s extremely messy.

If something stands out, I’ll mention it, e.g. https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/bosch-router-double-discount-deal-prime-day-2024/%3C/a%3E .

If someone brings up about a particular deal, such as the Makita miter saw mentioned below, I’ll try to fact-check and analyze it.

People are going to be gullible. I used to be gullible, and trusted the “over $600 value” claims and such on the sides of cordless power tool combo kits.

Most of the time, I round up in posts. $13.97? That’s just $14. I tear apart “save $XYZ” claims in deal posts.

People are conditioned by marketing tricks in most aspects of life. If cereal boxes are advertised as being 2 for $5 rather than $2.50 each, how many do most people buy?

When sorting through deal posts on big sales events like Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, it takes maybe 20 times longer to find far less “I’d buy that at this price and feel I got a good bargain” deals.

A lot of the deals seasons have started to blend together, which makes things even more confusing. A lot of holiday specials are in their “regular price” reset cycles right now.

The Dewalt Atomic series cordless drill kit, for example, is $159. So when it goes back to $99, that’s a good value, and what I’d consider its “regular” seasonal deal price. I’ll include it in holiday season coverage, but you’ll NEVER see me saying “hey look, you’re saving $60 on this kit!” Mass media “shopping experts” will, either because they don’t care to be honest, or because they don’t know any better.

I used to sort through tool deals because I was shopping for myself. Then I did it because it continued to be fun, and readers seemed to appreciate and benefit from it, and it also brought in new visitors. Now? It feels almost like I have to, because no one else is.

Getting a good bargain on tools is a lot harder today than 10 years ago, or at least it’s become a lot harder to *know* whether we’re getting a good deal on something or not. That’s the real challenge.

If a cordless drill kit is $99 for say 9 months out of the year, is it still a “deal?” I think the phrase “special buy” applies, but the nuance isn’t relevant to someone shopping for Black Friday deals on drills.

Your point is valid. What could or should be done about it?

I was interested in some of the new SK “China” socket sets to have in my work truck. It seems like they marked the price up, then tacked on their prime day discount. There’s no real savings vs. before. The SK 5 piece plier set was also not $99.99 before prime day. I call shenanigans.

I wasn’t sure on that one, but price trackers say it’s been $99 until now. Google’s results preview also shows $99.99.

If in doubt, I’d bet that some of these deals will return for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Have not yet been able to talk myself into a rechargeable battery flashlight. Think inserting a fresh disposable battery is the better option compared to a built-in rechargeable running low.

Am I being too old school?

I have the original Arkfeld. It’s a great flashlight, but I don’t think I’d buy it again because of its proprietary magnetic charger.

I carry the Nebo Slim Mini every day, and it has a USB-C charger. It’s so thin that I don’t even think a button cell battery could fit inside it. I’ll carry it for maybe 1-2 weeks before the charge runs out (about 2 hours total runtime), and then charge it for an hour and it’s good.

Definitely worth it on the convenience factor of having an ultra-thin flashlight and not dealing with batteries.

        It’s $15 on Amazon right now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08Z3Y3LJT/

(Not sure why Amazon says it’s not competitively priced – $15 is what I paid and it’s normally $20. You just have to click “See all buying options”)

For rechareable flashlights, the type of charger is critical for me. Since I am moving all my devices as much as possible to USB-C (vs. the annoying micro-USB format), I have USB-C chargers already set up everywhere I keep my flashlights (I use Lenovo Thinkpad chargers-$25-$30/each that can charge up to 65watts, though there are plenty of other options). Once you have a “standardized” charger, it is actually easier to simply recharge them than swap out batteries for my occasional usage (and modern lithium cells hold their charge much better than recharables used to).

I have the Wen drill press on this list and really like it.

Same with Metabo HPT 10″ miter, though mine is branded Hitachi. I don’t think they ever changed much.

Tempted by the Flexiclick. Don’t really want to be in another platform but it’s smaller form factor seems better for its intended use than DeWalt’s analogue.

I have the Wen 4214T. It’s way better than it should be, even at the normal price. the $206 I am seeing is quite good and cheaper than I paid for mine nearly three years ago.

The Metabo HPT miter saw, is simple but good. Single bevel, a non-slider. These are actually quite accurate because there’s fewer moving parts. I have the 18v version and really like it.

The flexiclick is great. Super torquey and a fabulous trigger.

I agree about the miter saw – I think I paid about $90 around 5 years ago. It’s great that the price hasn’t jumped given inflation. This saw has served me well for lots of home projects.

Comments are right, they’ve just jacked up the “price” to inflate the % discount. Ex: The Streamlight Dualie always hovers around $30…they have it for $25 which isn’t bad but are showing the normal price as $62 which is BS.

Sorry, I never look at the list price. I know it’s regularly $30, and included it because it’s $25.02 for Prime Day.

Money saved is money saved. List prices are almost always bogus.

I bought them last time they had a Prime day. For $20 they are pretty good. I wouldn’t put them on par with Knipex quality, but the SK ones do seem to work pretty well.

Which is a better deal for a Dewalt oscillating 18 V.

Model DCS356c1 with a 1.5 ah battery and includes a bag

    Model DCS354PK with a 3 ah battery

Both are on sale for $99 one at Amazon the other at Home Depot

I recently decided against buying one because of the price, but these deals seem pretty darn good

Man I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I’ve had the 356 for a few years, haven’t treated it well doing sprinkler work and all sorts of other muddy and wet tasks and it’s a workhorse. The 3-speed switch is handy compared to the other one b/c you can set it and pull the trigger and not have to feather it as you would with a single speed. I think I would miss it as a feature. But the 3ah battery is the better one, obviously. If you have other Dewalt 20v batteries I’d get the 356, if not then I’d go with the 354. But they are awesome and the blade change mechanism is money.

DCS356 is the XR tool with 3 speed ranges.

Do you want that, or a higher capacity bundled battery.

The better DCS356 kit is on sale once or twice a year. It’s not now, but could potentially be for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, although even that’s not guaranteed.

      e.g. https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/dewalt-best-xr-oscillating-multi-tool-prime-day-deal-2024/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E

The Atomic and XR oscillating tools are ALWAYS on sale for the holidays. Skip these deals, and they’ll likely be back in a few weeks for the season. The better DCS356 deal is extremely unpredictable.

Thus, yes it’s a good price at $99, but if you’re hesitant, it should be safe to wait.

You chose correctly! The XR model is the only one to get if you have a choice. I started with the Atomic model 1st, and sold it because of the lack of the speed selector switch. It is difficult & annoying to have to feather the trigger to try and maintain lower speeds. Also, I’m sure that you either already have other larger batteries (or will eventually buy more in the future), so the small battery in the current kit ultimately won’t matter. The missing speed selector switch will annoy you forever, as the tool will likely last a VERY long time with homeowner/DIY use. You likely will never wear it out. That’s because these cordless oscillating multi-tools are best for quick/small jobs. If you’re doing a large job involving multi-tool cutting, you really should invest in a high-quality corded multi tool (I like my Fein) with better vibration control. The DeWalt is a good tool with arguably the best blade change mechanism, but it transmits a lot of vibration to you hands, which is not good for your hand function/health long term.

My take away is from the “What are Readers Buying” section.
Readers are holding on to their wallets and not buying expensive items.
The Metabo HPT circ saw and the Bora sawhorses are the costliest of that listing, but neither is past $140.

No? I look through the list of what’s being purchased via affiliate links and add in deal mentions that I had previously missed.

Unrelated to that, I think a lot of folks are holding off on bigger purchases for the holiday, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday deals.

Or taking advantage of Acme’s and other retailer’s coupon promos where you can buy exactly what you want, rather than hand-picked promo deals.

Amazon hasn’t had very good deals on pricier tools for a while – they seem to focus on more impulse buys. It’s harder to find higher ticket item deals, such as woodworking equipment.
