Amusing Amazon Algorithm Glitch: “Expert Assembly” Services for a Small Plastic Parts Cabinet

Amazon Listing for Quantum Parts Cabinet

I recently learned that Quantum Storage Systems makes plastic parts cabinets, similar to Akro-Mils’. I added the cabinet to my shopping cart to save for later, since I’m curious to see how it might compare to my much-loved Akro-Mils cabinets.

After I added the parts organizer to my Amazon shopping cart, there was a pop-up window advertising “professional assembly” services, and I had to laugh.

Amazon Installation Services for Quantum Parts Bin

For just $112.30, you can hire professional assembly of this $16.25 plastic drawer parts cabinet, which has a shipping weight of ~3 lbs.

Note that moving the cabinet to a new spot is not included. With a typical assembly time of 3 hours, an expert will remove packaging materials and assemble the [pre-assembled] cabinet for you.

Also note that this is for assembly services, and not installation, and so mounting the cabinet to a wall is most likely not included in the services.

I’m guessing that Amazon’s algorithm saw the “cabinet” part in the product name and automatically attached professional assembly services to it as an upsell.

This isn’t a big deal, I just found it to be amusing.

Amazon’s Home Services have been around for more than 3 years now. I still haven’t heard from any service providers, techs, or pros that have sold their services on Amazon, and am curious to hear what experiences have been like.

Well if someone is dumb enough to choose the ‘expert installation’ option then they deserve to have a guy in overalls pitch up and take off the plastic wrapping and pop it on the workbench.

I agree though that it’s probably for server/network cabinets or big tool cabinets.

I’ve had this happen with other items too – some that conceivably might benefit from un-packaging – but others where the option was clearly ludicrous.

It’s almost worth it just to put the guy’s reaction on YouTube.

I’d contribute $5 to Stuart if he buys this and pays for assembly (and videos it). WHO’S WITH ME?!?

I work in home assembly for amazon. Some people do not have the time, or they may make enough that it is not worth the hassle of unboxing it and figuring it out.

I wish there was a brand making them with stainless steel, the frame and the drawers. They are very useful in workshop, I have installed a few of them in a restaurant in the maintenance room 10 years ago and they kept the place organised very well, they needed a lot of maintenance and different sizes of screws, nuts, washers and etc. was always needed, their frame was made of steel but later after a few years I noticed the same brand and also others turned to plastic frame! While all commercial things turn to more heavy duty (in general) things, for us they produce junkies more, if you look at the seats in the airports, metros, train stations and other commercial places you will notice that they are mostly made of stainless steel, at least in London I can feel that, even the new windows they install in train stations are made of stainless steel, and for residential properties they make PVC ones :))) I have googled for ages to see if I can find stainless steel windows to buy but nothing comes up. I think it is worth it to pay extra for stainless steel windows, you will not need to paint first of all and not every few years you would need to repaint also, the cost at the end would be much less specially in Western countries that labour is not cheap…

“Typical assembly time of 3 hours”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the “expert” part …

I used “free expert assembly” for a grill … what i mostly wanted was help to get the grill (a kamado joe – heavy ceramic grill) up the stairs to my backyard, as my house is on a slope 🙂

I used Amazon Home Services to install a chimney rain cap on my roof. It was reasonably priced vs. what I had seen from other places and saved me from having to get up on my steep roof. The guy came out and installed it when he said he’d show up and did a good job. No issues!
