Thanks for the new list! I think I’ll get the Klein MM400 for $35 instead of the kit as I have most of the other stuff. This is an auto ranging multi meter more than half off. Maybe worth adding to the list.

So I have 2x- 24” Bessey parallels & just grabbed 2x- 48” Jorgensen parallels for $40 a pop at lowes! Jet says that have “Patented blah blah blah” clamps tech lol
Is there any reason or features that I should favor the Jets versions over the bessey or jorgensen parallels? That’s you kno of lol

        Nov 28, 2022

The question to ask is whether the Jorgies perform as well as your Besseys, which you’ll be in a position to answer firsthand.

If you cannot tell the difference in use, then there’s no reason to look closer at Jet.

From what I’ve heard, Jet and Bessey are best.

I’ve only bought Bessey. I’ve tested cheaper clamps and there were significant differences in clamping performance.

I watched a video comparison of parallel clamps on YouRube a month or so ago. It was done by 731 Woodworks. The results were a bit surprising. The tests weren’t as good as project farm, but it’s certainly worth a watch if you’re in the market for parallel clamps.

These deals are always a chore to sort through, and it can be far worse on a mobile device. I can only hope it’s helpful, and if not, a snapshot of the deals landscape helps when prepping and researching deals the next time around. =)

There’s a downside – aside from how fatiguing it can get this time of year. I ordered several items off the list myself, and probably wouldn’t have if I hadn’t take so close a look!

As for the Olight Baton 3, I like everything about it, and am also growing to like the larger “Pro” that launched recently.

Is the Gearwrench tap and die set HSS or carbon steel?

    Reply
    • JCDIY

      Nov 27, 2022

It’s carbon steel, but well made and fares well in comparisons. I recently got the largest set, use cutting oil meticulously and I’m pretty happy with it. Taps will wear out eventually, and I’ll replace the worn ones with HSS from an industrial supplier. It’s much cheaper that way instead of going with a full HSS set from the start. Same tactic with router bit; start with a well-rounded economical set and replace worn out bits with high quality singles.

I think for taps & dies you really need to consider your application before deciding to go cheap or not. When taps fail it’s not just the tap itself which needs to be replaced, now you’ve got the broken-off tip of the tap stuck in your workpiece. If you’re lucky you can remove it without too much effort but a broken tap can easily turn into a huge and very expensive ordeal if it’s broken off in something critical. If you have to tap a hole in something important it is WELL worth springing for a HSS tap, in my opinion.

          Nov 27, 2022

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve broken a few taps many years ago, before I learned the difference. While I understand the argument of a cheap set for chasing threads, I just don’t think it’s worth the risk that you detailed above.

A set like the one above isn’t ideal for fabrication projects, it’s more of an “I need to repair something fast and the industrial supply shops can’t get me the taps or dies I need until tomorrow/several days from now” type of product.

I buy 3pc taper, plug, bottoming tap sets, and sometimes spiral tapes, for fabrication projects.

          • fred

            Nov 27, 2022

Walton and others do make tap extractors. They come in style to fit the number of flutes on the stuck tap. the sometimes work. We had customers (mostly aviation mechanics) who would come to us to remove a broken tap from important assemblies. We had EDM (spark discharge) machining equipment that almost always was successful – and profitable (for us anyway.)

          • Bill

            Nov 27, 2022

Stuart, who are your go to industrial suppliers for high quality HSS tap and die sets and the 3pc sets you spoke of?

          • Stuart

            Nov 27, 2022

            @Bill

MSC Direct – I check their sales flyers on occasion for promos.

I have purchased Triumph, Cleveland, and Hertel in the past, among others.

In the MRO catalog, page 55, they have Hertel 3pc HSS hand tap sets, e.g. 1/4-20 at $12.89.

Their search is pretty good, and popular products have links to catalog pages where you can see more brands and SKUs.

I don’t recall the last time I bought individual dies – I generally use taps almost exclusively. On the extremely rare occasion I need a die, I reach for a general purpose set.

          • MM

            Nov 27, 2022

Bill, I know you didn’t direct your question my way, but just to share, I have bought small numbers of quality taps from McMaster-Carr before, including 3pc sets. I have also bought from Tool Tech Industrial and Bass Tool, though those may well be local to where my machining business used to be located in Texas.
If you are looking for sets you will rarely find brand names. Most industrial vendors stock three tiers of taps, “import”, “quality import” , and “USA”. They will all be HSS. “Import” is a low end grade (think Harbor Freight) and isn’t worth your time. “quality import” will be somewhere like Germany or Japan and will typically be good value for money, the USA grade will also be good.

          • DRT42

            Nov 27, 2022

I got that same Gearwrench set a couple of years ago, and haven’t broken any yet. Not saying that it’s the greatest set, but I do use it for fabrication projects and I have come to like the pass-through tap handle. That said, you can find 3-piece sets in HSS at McMaster. I just ordered one about an hour ago.

          • Bill

            Nov 27, 2022

            MM & DRT42,
Thank you both for your reply. I know that quality HSS will cost multiples of the cheaper carbon steel, so I’ll see if want to continue to buy a few as the need arises or go for a set.

        • fred

          Nov 27, 2022

We had a master machinist in charge of our tool room in our metal fabrication business. he probably forgot more about taps and dies than I ever learned. But my take is that it might be better to buy a few pieces at a time as the need arises rather than speculate that you need a full set. Alternatively – you might look at the common sizes that you might encounter in the shop/home/car etc. and buy quality ones to meet those needs.
Like Stuart – I find that I use taps more often than dies – and having starting, plug and bottoming taps can be useful. For some applications, specialty (spiral, pulley taps are better suited to the material. With dies – I’ve always thought of solid dies (round or hexagonal) as being better suited for cleaning up threads – while split (or 2-piece acorn) dies better suited for creating threads because of their adjustable cut depth. Early in my life I bought a few sets of taps (Greenfield Tap&Die – then made in Massachusetts. While I’ve used some of the components extensively – many others still have their protective coatings intact some 50 years on.

If you want tool-free, you’ll need split-ring blades. I don’t know of any good quality value buys in that style. Maybe Imperial Tool?

I bought the DeWALT oscillator. Also, the Bosch OSL114C blades 10 pack. Then realized ooops, Starlock. But someone at Amazon comments said get an adapter – I have yet to find that DeWALT to Starlock adapter. I really want the high quality blades but hope an adpater isn’t bulky otherwise maybe will let the DeWALT go? I’d rather have the blades I think.

TLDR: looking for a DeWALT to starlock adapter, unless not advised to go that route. (homeowner use)

Starlock accessories fit most brands’ tools.

It’s Starlock tools that are only exclusively tied to Starlock blades.

Dewalt tools usually come with an adapter that allows for universal-type blades. Or they work tool-free with split-ring blades.

Once my blades come in I can confirm whether or not they work with my Dewalt OMT.

        Nov 29, 2022

I have a slightly older model of the Dewalt OMT, it came with an adapter to use starlock and other types of blades. The downside is that this adapter requires you to use a screw to secure the blade, it does not not work with the super-fast blade change that is otherwise a major benefit of the Dewalt tool.

Amazon does super easy returns so if it were me I’d return the starlocks and get some standard type blades. I watch when Home Depot has Milwaukee blades on sale and then I stock up. They’re not the best OMT blades I’ve used but they are very good and they are often on special for good prices. I also don’t hesitate to buy Imperial Blades, Diablo, and Dewalt but it’s usually easier to find good pricing on the Milwaukees.
Home Depot has a few good deals right now, for example:

I’m looking at the DeWalt 14 piece drill set with the tough case. Does DeWalt sell the individual dovetail inserts to make up your own case? I’m thinking I could put some 2 inch bits in the space above the smaller drill side and have a nice jobsite box.

Not that I’ve seen. They only recently started selling custom case components, but filled inserts.

As bad as it sounds, if you want inserts, the base way to get them is with bit assortments.

The MaxFit 30pc set sells for $9.97 with free shipping at Home Depot and comes with 2x insert bit holders and 3x power bit holders.
