  1. Those Home Depot M12 deals are among the worst deals HD has ever offered.

    Stopped scrolling through 4 pages in. Almost comical how much higher the price or lesser the deal they are compared to previous “Deals of the Day”

      • 3 or more links won’t send you to a 404 error, it’ll send you to moderation, which I wouldn’t have approved just now. (I’m in Hoke Depot’s parking lot, to give you an idea on how often I check on things.)

        I would caution that multiple comments with links in a short span is much more likely to trigger the spam filter.

  7. Re: Home Depot “hack” — could someone explain this?
    I’m shopping for M18 Fuel tools — some are sold as kits with bonus tool or battery I may not want. It’s possible to return part of a kitted purchase??

    • Not part of a lot (it came in one box) but if it was a free battery added on, you can return the battery (or the tool) for a pro-rated amount

  10. Weird rearrangement at my home Depot. The toolbox aisle section that used to be tough system is now the Ryobi modular boxes and the DeWalt cases are scattered in multiple temporary locations spread over unrelated aisles.

  11. I don’t know why I never see DirectToolsOutlet.com on here but there is currently a 25% off most items going on right now.

    If you’re in the Ryobi or Ridgid battery ecosystems there are some good deals on already solid everyday prices on the factory-blemished stuff. I picked up a blemished 40V sting trimmer/ blower combo with a 5ah battery for less than half the HD price.

    If anyone is looking to switch to battery OPE, I’ve been very happy with the Ryobi 40V brushless Whisper blower and was blown away by the power of the brushless carbon-fiber 40V trimmer. Huge upgrade over my 36V Husqvarna trimmer and blower that both seemed very underpowered.

        • Could be; I don’t check such sites because they don’t often align with my shopping needs, and they’re too inconsistent when building links for a post.

          I also pay much attention to recon tools or off-brand power tool batteries and chargers.

          • I agree DTO isn’t good for posts. Yes, I’ve gotten some really good deals from them, but their stock is always changing and the deals are typically pretty short. And sometimes it takes them a long time to ship.

          • DTO and FestoolRecon.com are the only refurb outlets I trust, since they’re run by the manufacturers themselves. The latter is one of the only places to get Festool below MSRP, at the cost of requiring you to frequently check it (or write a script to ping you when it updates). “Chase” tools, especially vacuums and Dominos, sell out pretty quickly, but I’ve seen them with surprising regularity nonetheless.

    • I’ve bought several ‘blemished’ (Ryobi) tools from DTO – could never find any defects on any of them. Maybe if HD doesn’t sell their quota then DTO steps in?

      • Home Depot is the only place that is contracted to sell Ryobi as new. Much of what DTO is sold is new, but can’t be listed as such, as it would be competing with HD.
        Blemished usually means its new, maybe out of box new, and the factory reconditioned is where you are getting fixed units. And if the “blemished” unit is within warranty based on serial #, it will be taken care of. Recon’d units will often be stamped such, or the serial # altered to show so, and not typically covered.
        There shipping has become much better since earlier this year. Days, not weeks (or month for some) as it was.

        I would highly avoid reconditioned units from there or elsewhere, really only can think of CPO. The little extra savings it not worth the heavily reduced warranty period.

      • I remember reading that if even one box on a pallet gets crushed, the entire pallet is marked “factory blemished” and goes to DTO. May or may not be true, but I’ve also never found anything slightly off with any such items I’ve purchased there.

      • I really like the DTO stores but unfortunately the two stores are around 2 hours away from me. My first visit was like 5 years ago where i got a Ridgid hybrid fan for only $25 . It was called blemish but was in original packaging and has been perfect. I have ordered online too and got a Ridgid 18v pin nailer for only $24 after Christmas a few years ago. I agree these deals are fleeting & i have never had a problem with anything i have bought there.

    • I hate to say it, but in 5-10 years, things will be so bad….we’ll be pining away for these awful deals.

      • I’m much more optimistic. My first tools were purchased over 60 years ago – so I’ve observed market trends for many years. What I find is that many folks tend to think that whatever we have now will prevail. So, when the market (for most anything) is booming, many put on their rose-colored glasses and act if “La vie en-rose” will never change. Then, when things inevitably change – the same folks may put on their gray-lensed glasses and predict never-ending misery. History says that markets cycle, prices and earnings sometimes get out of whack – but then come back into adjustment. Sure the $1 that I spent in 1955 is equivalent to $11 today – but the average family income in 1955 was around $4200. So, my take is, that in 5-10 years things will be different – but whether we think that they are better or worse than today – will be different too.

        • I concur! In the original two comments, I hear strong notes of, “Back in my day, you could buy a chop saw for a nickel! And they’d give you a ha’penny for change!”

          In addition, versus twenty years ago, the availability of nearly any tool I might want at nearly any price point is a complete game-changer. The “middle” of the market has moved down somewhat in quality, perhaps, but the market as a whole has expanded—I certainly couldn’t have bought a Wiha #000 picofinish screwdriver 20 years ago unless I happened to have gotten on the right catalog’s mailing-list, nor could I have bought a thousand no-name ones for $20, as I currently can on Alibaba (seriously; I just checked. What the hell are those made of, I wonder!?).

          Everyone’s gonna whine about what has changed for the worse. But let’s not forget that we’re still sharing this planet with people whose commute to their first, teenaged office job depended on the health of their horse, and whose grandparents fought in the (U.S.) Civil War. I’m quite confident life has gotten better in a number of areas, most of which are quite a bit more important than tool prices.

          • I enjoyed reading Fred and your comments, and I firmly believe history in all its aspects repeats itself.

            However, the US economy is an exception to the general rule that “history repeats itself” since gov and policymakers are always working so hard to avoid historical repetitions.

            I don’t have much experience with both of you; I was born in 1989. However, from reading data and exploring the pre-1971 era, I can tell an awful thing that made living costs difficult, and owning fully paid goods became a luxury in my time.

            What I am talking about differs from market cycles and goods availability. It is more related to who holds the wealth; in this case, I mean big companies, hedge funds, and government institutions. They all work tirelessly not to deliver goods and services and fund new projects but to control consumers’ behaviors to maintain a constant flow of cash/income, and they are doing so to avoid a market crash, recession, and depression.

            And I see the results of such policy in my generation (31-39 years old). Many don’t have a house or car (The American dream). Also, many are struggling to form a family! All this is due to expenses and financial responsibility.

            Instead, the new lifestyle I see is subscriptions and increased non-productive consumption. It feels like someone says to the individual, don’t try to be an inventor or risk taker anymore.

            All indication points the way to go is, to having more consumers or, at best, being a part of a bigger team, aka, serving others = bigger entities!

            Last, regarding measuring inflation, I don’t follow the principles of how much the dollar was worth back then and nowadays. Instead, I see it as what was the income and the cost of things back then, and based on these facts; I establish the comparison. This comparison, for me, makes more sense since it does contain the element of time ” What is duration/time will take to own?”

            For example, the cost of living is 1971, a new house costs $25k, and the average buyer’s income is $10,600. This means the house costs 2x the gross income. Taking into account the time factor, for example, you will own the home in about 8 years if you give %25 of your income. In 2022 house market saw an increase by 5-6x compared to the average buyer’s gross income. Considering the same time factor ratio, it will take about 25 -30 years to own a house! Someone is trying to avoid historical repetitions, but what is happening is delaying the economic cycle!

            This is the type of data I look for and trust. Any other data is used to deviate the public from knowing the reality.
