Discussion

I’ll update the post with any new worthwhile tool deals I can find.

Overall the deals are okay, with a couple of HOT deals mixed in with plenty of mediocre ones.

As usual, I sorted through the deals to highlight the ones I found most interesting – the deals I’d buy for myself or recommend to others.

Shop All Prime Day Tool Deals

Amazon’s deal navigation is a mess. You might find it helpful to search the “Prime Deals” search bar (via the link above) for your favorite brand. Doing this revealed some decent deals that were otherwise missing from their scrollable list of tool promos, and maybe you’ll have similar luck.

The Bosch 12v max right angle die grinder for $119 is a great buy on a super useful tool. I paid retail for mine when it first came out and have no regrets.

The few reviews on the Bosch seem positive. I bought a Milwaukee (2485-20) version and cannot recommend it. In fact -I would recommend against the Milwaukee. I was not expecting pneumatic equivalency – but the Milwaukee stalls with the least little bit of applied pressure.

Not so with the Bosch; it seems to have plenty of power. I haven’t used my pneumatic one since I got it.

Agree 100%. Looks real nice but completely ineffective; always stalls. I don’t understand all the positive reviews. How are they using it and not stalling out?

pretty much what happened with the 3″ Milwaukee cutoff tool. Great idea in theory but underwhelming performance. It only likes 4Ah and higher batteries and would still stall quite easily. I got the Ridgid as well and it performed much better

That die grinder doesn’t appear eligible for the $50 off 200 promotion anymore – too bad, because that would be enough to sway me!

I’ll check later today in case the deal comes back.

So, interesting development. On a whim, I decided to contact Amazon’s customer service and enquire about the promotion since the die grinder was eligible earlier.

I asked about the GWG12V-20SN die grinder and the GWS12V-30N 3″ angle grinder, neither of which showed up on the eligibility list, but together added up to about $239. The customer service rep said I could order and he would add a note to my file to authorize a $50 refund.

The only “hiccup” was that I had to wait to request the refund until they were received (I presume that’s so Amazon doesn’t accidentally refund you before processing your order).

It’s not clear those two tools are meant to be included, so that outcome seems extremely “YMMV”. Nevertheless, I’m happy!

With things like that, make sure it’s in a chat, or if over the phone request email confirmation so there’s a record of what has been said.

Discounted tools are often excluded from “$50 off $200+” and similar promos.

I considered a lithium battery jumper like the Noco, but its lithium-polymer and its upper temperature range is less than extreme temperatures you can reach sitting in a car in summer in my region. And that’s the whole attraction of these units, just leave them in a car and forget about them until you need them. Battery jumpers with LiFePo batteries have a high enough upper temp limit, but none of the units I could find explicitly said they had LiFePo batteries. (The one exception was a big garage unit at $430). Usually they listed “lithium” or “a lithium polymer.” Granted, they may be being sloppy in giving info, but it stopped me from going down this path, I purchased new Cartman jumper cables on prime sale as a stopgap.
Anyone know of recommended LIFePo battery jumpers?

Lokithor makes several. The JA3000 has been great for me. It has a large LED array, a tire pump and USB in/out.

        Its on sale for $112.

I’ve read a little about the different Lithium Ion chemistries. There’s plenty of conflicting info and I’m no chemist. Many of the advantages seem quite beneficial for a jump starter, while the chief disadvantage (lower energy density) is less important than for a wristwatch for example.

        ADVANTAGES
LiFePo4 apparently offers longer life –
It’s not degraded by being held at full charge, while LiCo will last longest if charged to 30%
        More discharge cycles

LiFePo tolerates deep discharging at high rates

LiFePo is more stable = safer = less chance of thermal runaway

LiFePo has a larger temperature range

        DISADVANTAGES
LiFePo has lower energy density due to the lower voltage
        Lower popularity = higher cost

Not sure about self discharge rates vs LiCo or LiMn, etc.

I searched around Amazon and found a brand named LOKITHOR which claims to use LiFePo4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries in their jump starters. However, they cite the same upper operating temperature (122℉) as the NOCO units.

Picked one up based on it making the list and the comments. I got the one for 6L gas. Before it arrived wife’s car wouldn’t start. Amazon delivered, charged overnight, and next day I was able to get it started. Battery was below 2V so I had to use the override but it worked perfectly the first time (technically the time before I tried to start it before the Noco white light was lit up telling it it was ready, which rereading the user manual let me know battery was so low I needed override). Super happy with it and for this community’s comments which I trust.

Lots of good deals on Bosch. I bought the premium cordless jigsaw (GST18V-60BCN) for about $112 (regular $209). This required a cart with $200 of qualifying Bosch items for $50 off $200. I haven’t seen this jigsaw on sale at all since it was released a while back.

I also bought the new 12V die grinder (GWG12V-20SN) and 18V OMT (GOP18V-34N) which are both on sale for the first time I’ve seen. Buying both of these at the same time qualified for an additional $50 off $200, bringing the prices to $92 and $85, respectively.

Other good deals include the 18V random orbital sander (GEX18V-5N) for $97 and the 18V interchangeable plate palm (orbital) sander (GSS18V-40N) for $109, both of which qualify for an extra $50 off $200. You could buy both for $156. The 12V versions of both of these sanders are also on sale for $69 and $98 and also qualify for the $50 off $200 promo.

I also see that you could make a great drywall kit with the cutout tool (GCU18V-30N) for $97 and the screw gun (GTB18V-45N) for $99, both of which are on sale for less than normal and also qualify for the $50 off $200 promo. The GMA22 auto-feed screw attachment for the screw gun is also on sale for $69 and also qualifies for the $50 off $200 promo.

We never found on that cut as cleanly for longer as Famag. Over many years we bought ones from Amana, Bosch, CMT, Fisch and Freud and Porter Cable. We went through a lot of 35mm ones in our cabinet shop – and tried mostly the USA (Amana) or European-made ones (Bosch, Famag, Fisch, Freud.) Based on our inventories, in the last number of years that I was still working – we had settled on Famag.

In the remodeling business – the guys might pick up ones that they needed locally – so it was more catch as catch can. I don’t recall hearing much in the way of feedback from them.

BTW – the first Forstner bits that I ever used had brace-bit tangs on them and were manufactured by the Connecticut Valley Mfg. Co, I inherited these in the 1960’s – and they might have been 40 years old at the time. They still cut.

I tried one earlier this year. They’re ok, suitable, not great…far better than most of the cheap China brands and the similar ones that Woodcraft and Rockler sell. I’m still a fan of Freud but someday I may invest in the Fomag. I’d steer clear of the Milwaukee bits, too, and Irwin/Marples these days is absolute junk.

CMT actually has some nice ones as well, but I wouldn’t pick those up unless they happen to be discounted.

I just didn’t see anything real persuasive with the Bora bit. Only did six holes with it…not real well sharpened as received but it didn’t seem dulled after use. Easy enough to touch up. The black coating does not appear that it will be all that durable.

I’m less enthused with Freud these days but most are still excellent. Really bummed that they decided to discontinue many of the “between” sizes that they used to sell on the smaller end of the range. They really seem to want to shift to carbide instead.

It’s the same size and cell configuration as the 8AH. I’m not sure if the 6ah has any advantage over the 8ah. It could be using cells with a higher current capacity, but I can’t find anything comparing the two this way.

Weight and balance. Nice on the one hand recip although the 4Ah really does great on that tool. It allows the heat gun to achieve full performance where the 4Ah will nerf it after a few moments. Nice on the RO sander as well and doesn’t throw it backwards as much as the 8Ah. I think they’re likely the same 21700 cells in all of them but I’ve not had any fail yet to take them apart to salvage.

Companies have gotten a lot more careful about these sorts of things, but you can still sometimes find some really good deals.

For the Tstak/Versastack crowd, I saw the Versatsack 2-drawer unit for $32. I think that’s the lowest I’ve seen it in years. Usually the DeWalt hovers around $34 when it’s on sale.

Not a real impressive selection this summer. Even a lot of the China brands aren’t putting much out there or have increased prices and are doing prime day deals at or above what they used to sell for. Lots of great deals on Bosch cordless, though. The steel Gearwrench 3-drawer toolbox is about $60 but that’s just an ok price and the Husky or Craftsman often sell for less and are pretty much the same.

That little Wiha set (a “GoBox”) is super-handy. Everybody I’ve shown mine to wants one.

That Bosch sander might be calling my name. I’ve been looking for either it or the triton version for a while now

Also the noco battery jump started and chargers are good deals. If you don’t have some battery charger/maintainer device the noco genius is a great item. I just added another in my cart for my dad. Been meaning to put one at his house for a while now

Picked up the Vampliers solder sucker. I have the Engineer labeled version and I would cry if I lost it or it broke. Best solder sucker I have ever used outside of a dedicated desoldering iron station.

I’ll second that…had the Engineer for several years and love it. I’ve been wondering if any of the new copies are worth a hoot. Originals and copies both seem to get enough negative reviews about the top of the plunger rod breaking off…not sure if that’s user error but maybe so.

For clarity, Vampliers aren’t copies, they’re made by Engineer for the brand.

I mean the plethora of other-branded copies – there are lots now and some really do look identical. Not just in form but materials. But the breakage of the plunger seems to be happening on several (and probably could be solved with a different machining profile).

            Ah.

I’ve never had an issue with my Engineer-made ones, and aren’t familiar with any breakage complaints.

There are a lot of cheap knock-offs now – maybe that’s what folks are having problems with?

            Maybe shipping damage?

No…seems like it’s the same break in the same place, on Engineer and Vamplier originals as well as the copies. Never know how people are using the tools to determine if it’s their error or a design issue, but there are enough low-star complaints about it that it seems something might need to be addressed. Dunno. I’ve used my Engineer quite a lot and other than the ease of clogging it’s showing no signs of bending or snapping in that area. I love it. I don’t miss the old giant Soldaput type that…they were just huge. lol

I bought an Edsyn Soldapullt a few years ago, and then an Engineer around the same time. The Edsyn almost never gets used.

Any recommendation on the 8″ vs 9″ Vamplier lineman’s pliers?

I haven’t tried those, only the smaller ones.

That said, maybe the 8″? I think that if you need larger pliers for max capacity and leverage, you may be entering locking pliers territory.

I’d go 9″ for cutting, if you’re using them much. That tiny bit less effort adds up over a day. 8″ is a bit easier for twisting, everything else being the same pretty much. Check the pricing on the green Engineer (original) versions to compare with what Vamplier has currently. Often the Engineer is the same price but also often cheaper depending on the model. They’re exactly the same tools. Grip feels a little odd at first but they are super comfortable and surprisingly durable over time.

I just went to look at prices and notice something. I have the 9″ and thought the 8″ were the same but they are not. The 8″ has the normal centered grooves just like the smaller versions and slip-joints. The 9″ is offset and smaller so you still have some usable jaw to grip/twist normally. So if screw removal is important maybe consider that. I love the screw pliers that I have in slip joint and the smaller style – they have been livesavers a few times. Screws larger than what those will handle, usually able to get a grip with normal pliers or vise grips, so the grooves on the 9″ haven’t really been used for me. I like them better than the Kleins I had for years.

Pricing on Engineer is cheaper currently. By a lot for the 8″.

      8″ ; $23 – https://www.amazon.com/Multi-function-Gripping-Extractors-non-slip-neji-saurus/dp/B00NBSVYOY/

      9″ ; $27 – https://www.amazon.com/Engineer-PZ-78-Features-Serrations-Terminals/dp/B07PNFS8K6/

Not by Amazon, but this week Shaper Tools is giving 15% off accessories for the Shaper Origin handheld CNC/router. Takes some of the pain off the price point on the domino tape, the pacing consumable. They seem to have this 15% off accessories sale about twice a year.

So far, the only item on my wish list that became part of a Prime Day Deal was this magnifying glass for $23.95:

MagniPros used to sell it directly for $25.95 – so the Amazon price is good but nothing spectacular.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Picked up a ridgid oscillating multi-tool, with 2 batteries and charger, that I had been eye-balling at home depot. Free delivery also!
