If I had to pick favorites, I’d say that Home Depot’s deals hold the most appeal for me. But some of Lowes’ deals are good too, such as their Bosch accessory sets.

Home Depot’s cordless power tool combo kit promo is also still going strong. It’s a great way to buy some new Milwaukee, Ridgid, Ryobi, or Makita cordless power tools, with free tools and sizable discounts to increase the bang for the buck.
More deals are coming, but there’s no way we can possibly post about each and every one of them. Plus, my email response time is getting a lot slower than usual.

Are there any particular tools that are on your radar for holiday savings?
As usual, I’ll be stocking up on modular tool storage products, but I’ve also been meaning to pick up a new corner sander (it’ll probably be a Bosch), a ladder with 300 pound weight capacity, an aluminum work platform, and maybe some new woodworking supplies.

Costco had an in store display last weekend of a Dewalt Toughsystem package for $199.97. It included the tool carrier, a small case, a drawer case, and a large case. I checked Costco online and could not find any information on it, so I have to assume it is a very limited purchase item. Purchased separately, these four items can add up to well over three hundred dollars, so it looked to be a great deal for anyone looking for a starter set of Toughsystem tool cases.

I was in my Home Depot in No. VA on Sunday to pick up the Skeltool (sp). They had about 15 left, unless they had more in the back. What they were already out of was the DeWalt Socket set for $40. Was interested in it, but the display was empty.
I was also looking to see if they were selling a combo stylus/pen/light combo this year. I bought two of them last year for I think under $5 each. They were great. I lost one, and the other went through the wash. On to Ebay or Amazon to replace them.

I’m seriously considering the Craftsman Router Table with Router that is going to be on sale for $79. It could be total junk, but I have neither a full size router nor a router table. For something that may be used very infrequently, it seems like a way to give it a shot.
Someone talk me out of this. I really fear it is going to be terrible.

When I had my cabinet shop set up, I removed one of the wings off my unisaw and built a three inch edged laminated extension top. On the far end, I cut out and rabbeted an opening of approx eight inches by ten inches and cut some half inch scrap Corian plates to fit. I bought some extra router bases for the different routers I had and attached them to the plates. I was then able to use my saw fence with the router inserts. I also produced a portable router box for a small router out of laminated plywood that I could clamp to my assembly bench when I just needed to work on small parts.
End result; It is easy enough, if you have some time, to make something like this to suit your personal needs.

Tom, one thing to consider is the size router bits it will take. I think that it only takes 1/4″ shank bits and this could be a big deal, since it’s better to have one that will take 1/2″ bits and 1/4″ bits. 1/2″ bits are far more stable and do a better job. Generally, people who put routers in a table use 1/2″ bits. For trim and handheld, 1/4″ can be fine, but if I were going use a handheld router, I’d want a plunge base for sure. It makes a world of difference for many projects. You don’t use a plunge base with a router table.
I tend to favor more expensive routers with both a plunge and a regular base. Those tables are easy to come by used. I’ve gotten several over the years for $10-15., though you’d have to add the fence and featherboards. It’s also pretty easy to make your own table if you don’t want anything fancy.
You should check and see what size bits it can use, and if 1/2″ and 1/4″ that’s a plus. Also, if you want to use it only in a table, the plunge is less important.
You can check out router stuff at routerforums.com. Good advice on brands there and they are nice to newbies. Lots of people there have made their own tables.

While not total junk, there’s only so much you can get for under $100.
I had an okay Ryobi router table that I bought for $100.
Like ktash mentioned, the 1/4″ collet size is going to be a big limitation, in terms of power and bit selection.
With a minimal budget, I would go for a Dewalt or other brand’s trim router, and Rockler mini trim router table (https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/new-rockler-compact-and-trim-router-table/%3C/a%3E%29. It’s not the best setup, but will help you get some work done. And if or once you upgrade, these items will complement your new tools rather than being completely replaced by them.

I have the dewalt compact router with the plunge base. DW611Pk It’s still a 1/4″ shank, but has decent power. It’s partway between a trim router and a bigger one. The small router without the base is $116 but not in the promo. Porter Cable has a similar router/kit. Not sure if they are doing a promo.

The Porter Cable is similar, but single speed. I think the Dewalt’s variable speed is worth it for just a few dollars more.
There is a Porter Cable promo, but not quite as good as Dewalt’s. I think it’s $20 off $100?

I’d definitely go for the variable speed, then. The DeWalt has pretty nice dust collection, too. I use it all the time.

To each their own but i have gambled many times with craftsman power tools in small ways and have never once won.
But if you are looking for a router for around $100 try the hitachi 2 1/4hp. It has a fixed base and plunge base and takes both half and quarter inch bits (even 3/8 if you order a special collet) it can run for hours before getting warm to the touch.
I recently saw it for maybe $120 probably on amazon, bigskytools, or cpo.

If HD pulls another jerk move like they have in the past, where they bring out the big legal guns and actually threaten sites and individuals who leak, “leak”, or post anything about the deals in their BF ad before they want it officially released, I’ll probably just skip over them, maybe entirely.
Since most of the deals aren’t that great, it’s quite a relief that almost all major stores have released their ads well ahead of time, so shoppers can look and plan accordingly. HD seems to be stuck in the past and whoever is in charge was/is a real control freak. Releasing a late ad isn’t going to help anything, it’s just going to make most shoppers ignore the store entirely in favor of all those they made plans to shop at.

Tool-wise, I’m not really expecting to see any surprises. While that sounds weird, as surprises are often unexpected, in addition to the “special buys” already on sales floors, there will be a couple of lower prices, a DoorBuster Ridgid vac deal, a ladder deal, and maybe a work platform similar to the one Lowes has. This has been pretty much the case for the past few years. I can’t think of what kind of deal they don’t want made public.

I’m expecting Lowe’s to do some online-exclusive deals for Thanksgiving/Black Friday this year.
The past two years, HD hasn’t had anything spectacular, they just…had/have a really bad PR/promotions dept that throws a tantrum when their ads or deals get on the internet before they officially want them there – even if it’s just a day early and the official ad is released the next morning.
I don’t get it either, it just seems like BAD publicity (especially when the sites they threatened publish the threats they received and name names), but maybe they learned their lesson and the person/people involved are no longer with HD. Nothing has happened this year so far, so we’ll see.

And judging by how long their “Black Friday” deals stay in stock (I mean, I saw some of them still in store around Super Bowl time last year), you’d figure they wouldn’t mind the free early press to try and actually sell some of the stuff at BF prices vs. having to clear it out later on just to get rid of it.
