Black Friday and Cyber Monday are Over – What Tools did You Buy?

ToolGuyd Partial Sears Tool Collection

I don’t know anymore, if we’re in the start of the holiday shopping season, the middle, or the tail end.

But, the sales days purporting to offer the biggest tool deals, discounts, and bargains of the year are now past us.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2023 are in the rearview. What did you buy?

I took advantage of Acme Tools’ cyber coupon offer and bought a couple more Packout tool drawer units. They work great for my storage and organizational needs, with the size works better for me than steel or DIY wood storage solutions for certain things.

I say “a couple” because it was 4 or 5 in the morning and I was on auto-pilot working out ways to maximize my savings.

Don’t worry, I put it on the business credit card and was spending pre-tax dollars.

I also bought two more Dewalt ToughSystem compact tool boxes. The two ToughSystem 3-drawer units I ordered a few days ago arrived this morning. I plan to order two 2-drawer units as well while Home Depot has them on sale. I’ll sit them on a shelf or build my own mobile base.

The Dewalt Atomic cordless ratchet deal was too good to pass up.

I picked up some Bosch router bits from Amazon, plus a template guide. I also want an edge guide but that can wait.

I also bought a new small form factor computer and an inexpensive monitor to go along with it.

Adobe specifically excluding current subscribers from their discounted rates, so I cancelled my Creative Cloud (Photoshop etc.) subscription. That was a week ago, and they offered me 2 months for free. I tried to get the Cyber deal, but it still didn’t allow me, and so I won’t renew once the 2 month extension is up.

I went with Affinity for their vector graphics app (I use Illustrator but not daily) and will test its photo editing app as a potential Photoshop replacement. If not, Adobe has a $10 monthly subscription compared to $60 for all apps. I use Photoshop daily, but other apps such as Illustrator less frequently. Affinity cost a little over $100 as a one-time fee for all of their apps on all my devices, and is good until their next major update.

Bosch can’t get a test sample to me quickly enough, so I purchased the new laser measurer to test and hopefully review before the holiday discount expires.

I ordered some robot motion project parts while waiting for the Cyber Monday deals to go live.

I almost bought a lot more, such as a Fein vac to replace the test sample I donated a year or two ago, but held off.

My desktop speakers broke last night. It would have been so much more convenient if it happened a week ago. But I dug out some other ones for the time being.

Oh – I also bought two more Dewalt organizers, USB-C SSD hard drives, and… I think that’s it.

I entered the holiday season not needing much besides storage products, and so I think I did alright so far. The Dewalt ratchet was the only unexpected impulse buy for personal use purposes.

I worked through the night and breakfast time on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and that often leads to some surprises. Ah – I also ordered some hobby modeling books and supplies.

Sorry – it’s going to take me a couple of days to wind down. I think that’s about it.

There are a bunch of other things I’ve been considering, but the discounts were too little – or non-existent – to sway me or rush a purchasing decision.

I’ve been dragging my feet about purchasing mill-to-CNC conversion parts until I’m ready to start the project (I hoped to have finished by now), but none of that stuff would have been discounted anyway.

What’d you buy? Did you find deals on everything you were looking to buy? I strayed from strictly talking about tools – please feel free to do the same. But, stray within reason – no one really needs to year about your pajamas.

Also, did you like ToolGuyd’s deal coverage? What would you change for next year?

I went for tool storage and got some customized wrench racks from toolganizer.com.

Only seeing/hearing of them now. Did they have a decent sale? I’m a bit too Dutch, and will have to wait until next year if I know the savings are too good 😂

Not much honestly. I did quite a bit of looking, but there wasn’t much I needed that was also noticeably discounted. The only things for me where:

    – a cordless precision screwdriver, and
    – a wrench adapter set from “Big Red” that I thought was interesting because it wobbled (BHT-3SAS01).

The deals weren’t quite so hot here in Canada – I might have splurged for that Dewalt ratchet or a cordless grinder deal if we had similar promotions available here.

I also bought some Ontario Agilite kitchen knives to give as a gift – they were on a steep discount from Knifecenter (and kitchen “tools” count right?). Some LED headlight bulbs for another gift.

Really appreciated the coverage, myself and family members all bought off your listings. The updates (and singling out the new stuff at the top of postings) in particular helped a lot. Budgets weren’t high this year or we would have gotten a lot more. But:

It only showed up once, but I saw it and the Milwaukee M12 ratchet/cordless screwdriver combo kit for $100 (90 after my regular discount) fulfilled a tool I’ve wanted for about 5 yrs. It isn’t their latest, but it’ll do the job. Waffled between m12 and the new dewalt ratchets (have a lot of 20V yellow). Gotta say it’s nice to have the option to buy tools from either of two of the best platforms out there (20V max and m12), even if they don’t share chargers. Hopefully budgets will be higher next year!

Got the Ryobi 2x 4ah deal with free sander for my brother and his wife (she wants the sander). Still hoping the 3 or 6gal cordless shop vac will go on sale for them too. Also got the B&D tool bench/sawhorse off amazon (thanks to you reposting for cyber Monday after it sold out on Black Friday).

And I don’t know what all was purchased yet, but for friends/family asking for gift ideas, drill bit sets, toughsystem (smaller) components, the streamlight flashlight deal, and the craftsman tool trays all made the ‘I like these’ idea list. Wouldn’t surprise me if some bought for themselves too. Brother liked the toughsystem stuff I showed him so much he said he’ll be asking for it next year.

Off coverage, we got a massage gun and ring indoor cam both over half off. The massage gun is real nice on a sore back (provided it holds up) – we didn’t wait to wrap it under the tree.

I got that M12 kit on the same deal a few years back. I loved it. Those are two tools I don’t mind having brushed since I use them for lower torque applications.

Based on a Toolguyd post – I bought some of the Kasa smart outlets for stocking stuffers

I bought a 11pc “gift set” of concrete decorative pattern rollers from SBC (they had a 25% off deal) for a nephew who does landscaping/hardscaping

I bought some Lee Valley Gift Cards (14% off Cyber Monday Deal) for Christmas Gifts

Really appreciate all your insight and hard work this season, Stuart. Well, my wallet doesn’t, but my shop does.

    Hits
    – DeWalt 20V 3/8″ Ratchet Kit and the Portable Inflator + 20V Grease Gun + “free tool” Portable Inflator
    – Wera Tool-Check Plus and Advent Calendar from Fasteners Inc.
    – Bosch Starlock MultiTool Carbide blades 10-pack & GLM100-23 laser measure from Amazon
    – Bessey parallel clamps from Rockler

    Misses
    – Husky tool cabinet deal of the century. The options I wanted were sold out by the time I saw the deal, and since this was a “want” more than a “need,” I passed.

    Passes
    – Skipped all the tempting ToughSystem deals, as I’m waiting to see if ToughBuilt delivers on their StackTech roadmap this spring.
    – Rockler offered a 25% off one item coupon, but of course it didn’t apply to Festool and SawStop. I may have pulled the trigger on the CSC SYS 50 for that level of discount.

Regarding your Adobe adventures, every year I threaten to cancel via chat, and every year they match my current rate. It had been $20/month for the full Creative Cloud (amazing what a .edu email address gets you), but this year they dropped it to $17 with two free months. Seems like the chat reps are just compensated on saves regardless of the price.

I thought your holiday coverage was excellent, and I appreciate all the effort that went into back-linking and cross-referencing so we can find all the deals from, say, one brand or one vendor. Your experience regarding the historical value of discounts is invaluable (e.g., “HD discounted this to $199 the last few years, but now it’s $169, and it’ll run out of stock quickly”). Most of the packages arrive this week, so our shipping/receiving (i.e., the dining room table) will be very busy. Thanks again!

Thanks! I more or less did the same as last year with only minor changes.

With Adobe, for the past few years they either let me resubscribe or extend my subscription with the holiday discount offer (close to 50% or so). Last year I requested cancellation and the same deal came up.

They seemed to change policy this year.

$60/month is a lot when my needs are fairly light and well-established. I didn’t feel so bad about $30/month. But it looks like once the 2 free months are up, I’ll likely go back to the $10/month Photoshop and Lightroom plan, at least until or unless I can fully convert to Affinity.

I figured I could try to chat with them if I really wanted to, but it really seems like they went out of their way to turn existing customers away from the holiday discounted rates.

Im watching to see if ToughBuilt will still be around at all. Their last 10-Q expressed concern that they might not even make it a year without more investment, but a lot of investors feel pretty burned by their reverse splits and now it’s trading at under $1.00 a share and NASDAQ is threatening to de-list them.

If they manage to make their new drops next spring, hopefully they have their ducks more in a row so there will be support to back it up.

I picked up a new dowel jig from jessem from acme, in an effort to avoid delaying projects due to “lack of a domino”, a Ridgid tote because it was quite a value at $30 for my son’s RC car accessories vs the offerings from the systems I currently own(DeWalt and Milwaukee) and finally a genie belt drive garage door opener which I happily found to be an easy upgrade from a chain driven one.

I decided to try to have a crafter/maker Christmas and bought a small CNC machine and a laser engraver (also small.)

Got the Milwaukee right angle M12 die grinder that was on sale with the new HO batteries. The Knipex pliers wrench that was on sale at Amazon. A few random items from your suggestions.

I hope you can get some sleep now that the craziness has subsided. You did a great job with your coverage.

Picked up Triple Hammer Bolt kit for $129. Also got ToughBuilt folding work table at Lowe’s for $79. I never saw any sales on this table and was planning on buying the DeWalt table but I was in Lowe’s and like that the handle folds in on the TB version as compared to DeWalt. I would call that a Win- Win

Picked up two of the meme small Kobal toolboxes — debating on keeping them or no (the drawer action is a bit sticky/awkward, and the lids won’t quite fully open on the shelf I want to use them on.

Need to find time to get some more plastic storage organizers — ideally the Stanley from Home Depot (maybe tomorrow after work), though I’m still debating on more of the cheaper ones from Harbor Freight (which have been working out well for Lego bricks).

Kicking myself for not getting more Blackwood handled tools from Blue Spruce — looks like they’re out of that handle option and I worry it won’t return.

Great coverage as always. I got one Dewalt small-parts organizer and the M12 Fuel 3/8″ Stubby kit (yesterday) from HD. I missed the Bosch 12v Flexiclick when it was at $99 for Prime Day, but it’s $129 at Acme and I’m still considering it. Also passed on the Metabo HPT 36v router when it was a tempting $149.

I got the two pack of Milwaukee squares. I like the Empire that I have been using for years, but would like it even better in red. The small square will be a Christmas gift for my daughter. I bought a replacement Vacmaster vacuum. I was happy with the first one. I was not planning on getting anything else. The M12 rocket was a great deal that tipped the scales.

my makita drill yeeted the spring dings in the clutch the other night. but the spring dings are not a part you can buy, instead you need a whole gear assembly which i think includes a new chuck for $90. i suppose i could have sent it to the repair center, but i already did that when it had an issue where it would occasionally take a long time to slow down, while still delivering torque after letting off the trigger

so yolo, i spent $300 plus tax for
    – 2x 4ah batteries
    – 2x 2ah batteries
    – 2x slow chargers
    – brushless drill driver
    – brushless impact
    – brushless circ saw
    – cordless trim router (been wanting that for a hot minute)
    – brushless angle grinder*

just in bright bright green instead of teal

I had contemplated returning the grinder because it was the highest value least useful (for me) tool that i hear doesn’t perform well anyway. turns out it was out of stock so they just refunded me the $65 prorated cost/tax. not a bad haul for ~$260 all in. i still never got a makita cordless circ saw because they’re like $180 and i just don’t need it that bad. but as part of a 4 battery 4 tool bundle thats mostly brushless and cheaper to expand? might as well.

I got the toughbuilt foldable workbench for $75 at lowes, 2 drawer packout and crate from hd. Dewalt 20v barrel grip jigsaw with 2 5.0s on a hd deal of the day for $199 along with some spyder t shank blades. i bought some jorgensen bar clamps as im attempting to get into woodworking. I was hoping there would be a deal on the milescraft track saw guide but i reached out to milescraft and they said they werent having a sale. i cant justify spending so much on a track saw system as a regular DIYer. i need a 48 in level, will prob get a fat max as they arent that expensive. Im pretty content with my tools and im at the point that i want to spend real money (ie track saw system or the milwaukee tower light, or a recip saw or a cordless portable table saw) or hold off. decided to hold off for now as im feeling we are in turbulent times. i dont think itll feel any better next year, but at least for now it wasnt the right time.

I didn’t buy much tool-related this year compared to most years. As far as what was on black Friday sale:
Dewalt 14-pc drill set & 81-pc impact bit set
    Milwaukee 2-pc aluminum square set
    Toughsystem 2.0 half-size deep organizer
Bessey K-body clamp set from Rockler

There were some other killer deals this year, a few of which I would have loved to have jumped on: the 3-pc Dewalt woodworking cordless tool deal, the M12 right-angle die grinder with a total of 3 of the new batteries, etc. I was very tempted to buy a second set of the K-body clamps. And as with last year Flex cordless tools remain tempting, and there’s a good chance I might still pick up at least the $149 starter kit with the 2-1/2″ bandsaw as my free tool, but there’s no rush as that deal runs until early next year if I recall correctly. However, there was nothing I really needed and I had already made a lot of non-tool purchases so that was that!

I unfortunately didn’t grab anything this year. Mostly because I have no space to store more tools, and don’t have a big enough space for a bigger toolbox.

I can’t really think of any tools I need either. Everything is a want at this point. So I can’t justify any purchases. I may snag something closer to Christmas if I see a really good deal but that would be an impulse purchase.

Thanks Stuart, for another great job. Can’t imagine the total hours you put in.
I’ve been reading Toolguyd since 2014 and bought the majority of my tools based on your postings.
This year……not one thing tool related. Well, a Vector lithium jump starter, but right before the holiday sales. I have almost everything I need, and really can’t think of what I want in tools. The Surge would be nice, but I have 2- m12 and 1-m18 fuel impact drivers and it would be wasteful to get one, even though it would be quieter. I would have gotten the m18 inflator, but my ryobi still works and I spent (to me) a lot getting photo gear. A Nikon Zf with lens, and an ecotank printer, the Epson 8550. Having these new tools has reawakened my passion for photography. Something about holding a print is so much more real than having thousands of images on a computer and never going thru them.

Building our house now so lots of helpful tools from your list:

+ Husky pro tool chest combo
    + M12 rocket “crawlspace/attic” light
    + M12 stapler
    + Milwaukee hole saw kit

    – missed the cheap rigid shop vac deal
    – passed on the Fein one, was tempted but I’ll save the nice things until the dust has settled

PS: you highlighted the M12 cable “romex” stapler when it came out a year ago and it’s been my absolute favorite tool ever since. I bet I’ve sold 6 more just by letting buddies try it. Thanks for your hard work, really nice not having to cut through the BS elsewhere, you’ve kept things trustworthy and I try to send all my affiliate dollars your way 👍

The sale coverage was awesome. A million thanks to you. There was a lot that I wanted but I held off a bit. It would have been impossible to find this all on my own so I can’t stress enough how much I love your emails.

I already had the Gearwrench micro driver set in my cart, but I didn’t see the email about the $12 sale price until a few hours after it came out and it was back up to regular price. Now that I know how low it can go I think I’ll hold off and see if they come down again eventually. Really want it!

I had the half off Husky toolbox deal in my HD shopping cart with the free top hutch but waffled too long until both colors sold out in my area. I’ve been buying some old used tool storage for stationary use at home from the resale apps like OfferUp and Craigslist and get a bit shaky pulling the trigger on something new, but that would have been perfect and if they do it again next year I might have to be “a fool and her money.” I’m still keeping an eye on the cart today to see if it becomes buyable. It would be an incredibly special gift to myself and I’d feel so lucky to have it after the pangs of spending guilt and sorrow were settled with.

I have 2 rolling bases, 2 drawer sets, a wood top and the XL toolbox from the Packout line. Really want to add 1-2 more drawer sets in the new sizes but haven’t yet. I picked up everything else last year when you told us about the Buy More Save More deal at Home Depot. For just the two drawer sets I recall the savings being pretty frequently available so haven’t pressed buy yet but probably should today.

I take all of my automotive tools with me in the truck to work on some of my crazy projects a couple of hours away that are stored in the middle of a field so the mobile storage is amazing but I need a lot more of it! I think I will stick with Packout for immediate needs (1-2 more drawer sets) but the new line of ToughBuilt StackTech stuff that you clued us in on in October is so appealing. Waiting until Summer 24 for some of that to come out. If Milwaukee ends up competing there then we’ll see what happens, but that ToughBuilt line is robust and has everything I could dream of.

I’m rambling, but I did get the Wera Advent Calendar from KC Tools as a gift to myself, and of course grabbed more of the Dewalt storage organizers, as well as the Dewalt foldout table for my mobile automotive work. I really exercised restraint this year but am going back through the deals on some Gearwrench stuff today to grab the things I know I really need and could use right now.

Thank you again! Your emails have made me a smarter consumer. Although I end up wanting everything I see, the exposure to so many deals makes me think twice about what price I purchase things at, and also shows me that there’s an endless parade of things to buy – but I don’t need all of it all of the time. That’s a game I could never win. I feel a lot more discerning when I do buy now and my tools have become somehow much more special to me.

Jumped on the DeWalt $199 2x batteries + free tool deal from Acme – got a jig saw. Still hasn’t shipped but apparently the batteries are backordered.

Also jumped on the $20 Milwaukee rafter square bundle. I already have a full size combi square, but that little mini trim square was too handy (read: cute) to pass up, and I have some projects coming up that could use an easy, long, 45 degree straightedge.

Coverage was incredibly thorough and helpful. There’s no way I would have gotten those deals without being a regular reader here. Keep up the fantastic work!

Thank you Stuart for all the work this season! I spent far more than anticipated/budgeted…I think I may have a problem – besides being broke, that it!

    Hee hee! I got:

    – That Gearwrench tool box with two drawers. What a deal!
    – DeWalt cut-off tool plus two batteries for $200 from Acme. Not strictly a BF deal I think. Acme says they’re behind.
    – A Wen 10″ drill press. Not a special deal, but it’s Chrismas.
    – That Bora lumber rack, 6 tiers for something like 50% off
    – 6 Kasa smart plugs for lights and the dust vac, also 50% off
    – An Echo to control them. Voice control of the vacuum sounds pretty neat!
    – Not strictly tools, but a Zippo hand warmer, the kind that takes lighter fluid, and a hand warmer muff that you strap around your waist. Hunters use them so they don’t need to wear gloves. My shop is unheated and I’d rather not pay a lot for electricity.

Not as much as last year, but still, a lot!

Thank you for the coverage, Stuart!

I bought the DeWalt oscillating multitool kit from Acme using your link as well as some Bessey clamps from Rockler using your link. I already used the multitool—it’s really nice.

I scored the Knipex XS Cobra Pliers and Pliers Wrench a few days before. They’re tiny but handy.
