The ZT 0450, for instance – reviewed here – is a great everyday knife that doesn’t look as tactical as some of their other knives. Yes, tactical, not tacticool. ZT makes heavy duty knives, with some popular with law enforcement and military personnel.

Todd Begg is a custom knifemaker, and Steelcase are his line of imported mass-produced knives. I bought a mini Glimpse some time ago, to check it out, and returned it. It was $399 and its aesthetics were a little too glitzy for my tastes. But, that same knife is $180 right now, although in a different color. I’m on the fence, but will probably buy one for long-term review.

I believe the begg knives are produced by reate and their capabilities are astounding. Yes they’re made in China. But the owner of the company is a Chinese citizen who loves knives and started a company is his home country that puts many custom knives to shame.

But then I tried a Reate of similar size, and it just wasn’t as smooth. That mini Glimpse I tried was seriously the smoothest flipper knife I’ve ever used. But the price was way too high for aesthetics I didn’t care.
We Knives have also taken the industry by storm. Their quality is really, really good from what I’ve seen so far.

….No disrespect to you Adam or anyone for that matter, but it’s instances when China is praised despite it’s numerous problems that makes me glad I am old. Back in the day, both Americans and those that lived in the West cherished the fact as a first world nation we took pride in our work, liberties and the freedoms that came with it.
While I am sure the owner of We Knives is probably a nice guy, this doesn’t change the fact only the China benefits from this. Especially no American jobs will be created from this, so why chose to support a foreign country when there are knives that would create and support jobs in the USA or other first world nations where child slave labor and other atrocities do not exist or as prevalent?
Then again Benchmade decided to publicly reveal they really don’t want my business or a significant amount of other’s money, so I can understand not wanting to support businesses in general.

Let’s consider 3 scenarios.
1) USA brands that make their knives in China.
2) USA brands that make their knives in the USA.
3) Chinese brands that make their knives in China.
We Knives are not inexpensive knives, and so they’re not cannibalizing other knife sales. I have purchased WE knives and WE-made knives, and also USA-made knives. Most of the people buying these products are not one-knife users, they’re enthusiasts and even collectors. I didn’t purchase my WE knives instead of USA-made knives, but in addition to them. Brands like WE are coming out with new styles and great quality.
Whether made here or made elsewhere, USA retailers benefit from sales. Potentially, THAT supports and creates US jobs.
Personally, I do prefer USA-made knives. But, they’re quite pricey. Yes, there are less expensive knives. But WE knife-level quality?
Brands like WE have entered the market at prices that USA knifemakers don’t serve. Mass-produced knives made here have some compromises and are sold at lower price points. Higher-featured knives are priced considerably higher.
Remove WE knives from the market, and you’re probably not going to see any increase in USA-made knife sales.
Also consider that the success of a company like WE has benefits for other USA businesses.
Ferrum Forge is a USA knifemaker. I couldn’t budget for any of their USA-made knives, and didn’t like the sizes or styling of others. So, WE Knives is the manufacturer here, Ferrum Forge is the designer, and Drop is the producer. It’s not as simple as saying “you’re only benefiting China.”
I appreciate your opinion, and agree that it’s good to support US businesses and brands when possible. But in an example like this, WE knives produces high quality and at a price point not well-served by US knifemakers. This is not quite the same as say buying $20-no-name knives off of Amazon in lieu of a $35 USA-made folder.

Other than that, as Stuart mentioned, the retailer benefits. Plus the shipping company benefits and I’m sure there are some others in the supply chain (customs guy), who might also benefit.
I also agree it’s great to buy US made when possible, but It seems to me that even buying imported goods can benefit US businesses.

Just picked up a Kershaw with ball bearing pivot for less than $25! Cheap steel, but I’m sure it will still open packages. Should be a fun fidget knife.
