The price is good for what you get, but if you could also spend $10 more to get the DDB181 18V drill kit. Don’t confuse the DDB181 for the DDS181A in the kit above – the DDB181 is more of a compact entry price point model, while the DDS is more “middle of the road.”

I have Bosch 18v tools ,there not up to par with the rest of the 18v world, but great quality…..I really love my Bosch 12v cordless tools, powerful, ergonomic, compact and Bosch has many 12v tools that Milwaukee doesn’t have…and vise versa.

Both Bosch and Makita seem to lag behind a bit in bringing their full line offerings to the USA. When I’m over in Europe – I often spy Bosch and sometimes Makita tools that I don’t see this side of the pond.

Maybe i’m just confused, but I never understand why anyone would buy a radio or a flashlight from a *tool company*. I’ll buy a radio from an audio company (Peachtree?) and a flashlight from any number of great flashlight makers. Why in the hell would I want a Milwaukee or Makita light? Can someone explain?

It’s convenient.
I use several tool brand LED flashlights and worklights, and it’s convenient to be able to pair them with 12V Max and 18V-class Li-ion battery packs.

For a classic flashlight, NO
Round 360 deg camping light, maybe (I like to use these as emergency lights at home and in my cars, so I like cheap and cheerful ones that use standard AA or D cells)
For a work light (like the area work light in this kit), YES! The quality and selection is good, and it’s great to be able to use the same batteries as the rest of the tools.

I was never a personal fan of jobsite radios – and we tried to be very mindful of our clients’ sensitivities – not using radios unless having very specific understandings and permissions.
For flashlight – when we got our first ones bundled into our Makita 18V and Milwaukee M12 kits – my initial thought was “what a gimmick – just to fill out a kit and make it look better to the DIY crowd”. But then the crews wanted more of these flashlights – then lanterns – then larger M18 lights. Who knew?

What all the other guys said. Also, sometimes the radios or lights offer some capability that you can’t easily get otherwise. For instance, Ryobi has a set of radio/speakers that are linked by their own radio signals, so that you can have a string of speakers that are all playing exactly the same thing, simultaneously, wirelessly. I don’t know of a self-contained PA system that can do the same thing, for anywhere near as cheap.
And work lights are work lights. They aren’t flashlights. One stand-mounted worklight can illuminate an entire wall. I don’t think there is any light that can do that outside the tool brands like Milwaukee, etc.

The new Bosch 18v hepa vac is embargoed from US Sale from the UK while AmazonUS briefly showed it and now it’s “not currently available”…
There’s always Korea if I get impatient enough. The tragedy of First World Buying “problems”.
But normally I can find any Bosch stuff “somewhere”. Very annoying.

That 18v combo is really a whale of a deal. We all like to have the latest greatest most advanced tools but honestly, if you buy something today, it is out of date(technically speaking) a year or two later. In the meantime people go right on using their current tools and they work flawlessly. Count me with those who wish Bosch would be more aggressive in their U.S. market. More of their lineup and what are some of these models now, five or six years old? There is really nothing wrong with them but they do need to update somewhat regularly. Still, if I needed a kit right now I would be smashing the buy button at that price.

Is something up with Bosch? Their power tools are super discounted at Lowe’s. 2ah Batts for $35, the drill/impact combo(same as pictured above) for $100 etc etc .
I know that some of those on sale are dated tools but I don’t normally see Bosch drop to clearance pricing.
I am wondering if they’re preparing to restock their shelf space with updated gear. Perhaps make Core batteries available via brick and mortar. More brushless offerings, updated combos…..

I don’t know but maybe this is not the greatest deal. Last year I bought the Milwaukee bundle they were selling. Not fuel but pretty adequate . It had the Drill, Driver, Hackzall and 3/8″ Ratchet for $199. I don’t know why they would include a radio and the flashlight doesn’t look all that great.
Someone else mentioned it but yes why doesn’t any tool company team up with an audio company to come up with a great mobile audio system. The potential is there, besides just radio having a USB link to one’s smart phone and you could have a pretty slick system that would be really portable. The one thing the tool companies have down is making great batteries. It would be a great match.

Radios, lights, and some other things like fans are very handy when the power goes out. If you have a number of batteries normally used for drills, etc., they can be very helpful, including charging your phone.
Bosch is a great company and I have some of their corded tools. They are often innovative, but it seems that the 18v platform lags behind. However for someone just starting out, the kit would be a good buy.
