Bosch 5″ Random Orbital Sander/Polisher

Bosch-5-inch-Sander-Polisher

Bosch’s 3107DVS 5″ 3.3A random orbital sander and polisher looks to be a fine and robust tool. With a “D-handle” trigger and multi-position support handle, this sander looks like it offers a bit more control than a traditionally designed random orbital sanders would.

There is an even beefier Bosch sander that is built from a similar design – the 3725DEVS.

Despite the apparent awesomeness of these sanders (and that’s before looking at their impressive spec sheets), they may not be well suited for all users or applications due to their size and power. On the other hand, an all-in-one sander-polisher is a rather tempting prospect.

Homeowners, DIYers, and casual woodworkers may be better off checking out a number of more compact random orbital sanders. Bosch’s ROS10 sander and Porter-Cable’s low-profile ROS are two such sanders that come to mind.

Bosch’s 3107DVS sander will set you back about $110, which is not bad considering that you get both a capable sander and a polisher. Still, we cannot help wonder how a 5″ polisher performs compared to one of the many 7-10″ polsihers available.

I’m in the market for ROS. Will you have a final summary or some kind of comparison?

While I do have experience with a few brands, any comparison would likely be based off of a selection of sanders’ on-paper specs, which is probably not what you are looking for.

I personally use a Ridgid 5″ ROS, which I find to be a very nice tool, but if I had to replace it, I would likely opt for a Bosch sander. From what I recall reading, hearing, and seeing, Bosch’s 5″ RO sanders provide dust collection and a uniform randomness slightly but noticeably better than that of their competition.

There is also Porter-Cable’s low-profile sander that seems to be well designed and has a fantastic set of features. It is of course a bit more expensive than Bosch’s sanders, which is why the Bosch may be better suited for infrequent use.
