Bosch 12inch Axial Glide Dual Bevel Miter Saw

I just heard from my Acme Tools contact:

Previously the Bosch GCM12SD and CM10GD miter saws were excluded from our Cyber Monday promotion but they were just released and will be included in the 20% Off promotion around 2:30 CST today. The 20% will not combine with the 11% discount we are running on all Bosch products until the middle of December.

The GCM12SD will be $519.20 and the CM10GD will be $479.20.

Update: This promo has expired, but the 11% NOEXCLUSIONS coupon still works.

Which to buy? If you’ve been on the fence about these saws, and know you want one but don’t know which size to buy, I’d say maybe consider the 12″ over the 10″.

The 12″ seems to be far more popular, going by Amazon user review numbers.

I have an older 10″ test sample, and it’s not at all portable. Its size and weight makes it difficult to move, especially up or down stairs. I’d imagine that the 12″ isn’t that much larger or heavier.

I had requested the 10″ sample when it first came out. I hadn’t tested the 12″, and thought the 10″ would be more manageable, but in reality I don’t think I see see much benefits. Giving up a little extra capacity of the 12″ doesn’t seem to give you much in return. Sometime in 2018, I hope to do a comparison if I can get my hands on a loaner. I’ve been a little sour on the 10″, and think that seeing and using the 12″ and 10″ side by side will help with perspective.

Also, in case you missed the update to today’s Cyber Monday deals post:

Don’t buy either if you intend to carry it to jobsites. No good way to carry that saw, it’s an aircraft carrier. And that goes for either size – the 10” offers almost no savings in size or weight.

I agree – it is not a 1 person – carry-it-around saw. While the wheeled gravity rise stand makes it easier to move, it also adds to the weight. We’d transport it to jobsites fine – but we’d also bring a Unsiaw to some jobsites. Being able to wheel it into a Step Van or having a lift gate on the truck helps but this was not the saw we picked for one-person jobs or when the saw needed to find its way up a flight of stairs. I’ve rolled mine out of the garage, up some ramps into the back of a pickup – but If I had to do it everyday – I’d look at a lighter Dewalt , Makita or something else.
If you’re just setting it up in a shop – it can be a great saw.

    That’s a really solid deal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the 12″ much below $580

I paid $480 for mine at Home Depot several years ago by combining multiple discounts. It is a 12 inch, I use it as a permanently mounted shop saw, and it has served me well.

We had a batch of the GCM12SD’s mounted on Bosch’s gravity rise stand. No one would call this saw petite or easy to transport. Its quite heavy and without wheels under it – its a chore to move around. We had some problems with a few early ones – that had alignment issues that were not within the ability to adjust. It may have been damage in shipping – as the early cartons/packing were pretty poor. We sent them back – and I recall that later saws came better packed. While most of ours cut true along the glide path, we had one that did not – and was returned. I have not heard from the guys that the saws are getting sloppy with use.

Like with other tools today, if you buy one you need to check it out while you can still return it. I’d check both left and right fences for alignment to each other and for 90 degrees to the table, I’d check to make sure that the table was reasonably flat and co-planner with both sides of the stationary miter box. I’d check the blade at 90 degrees to make sure it is and/or can be adjusted square to the table. Finally I’d run some cuts in glide mode to see if you get a smooth cut with no burn marks on one side or the other. Naturally – you may need to make some adjustments per the manual. We had some (my personal one included) that were fine right out of the box – some that needed tweaking and (as I mentioned) some that got sent back.

Well reasoned comments – the check while you can still return make this a particularly scary saw to buy mail order. 20% off is a great price, but if get one of the bum saws, the only real option is to return it.

I’ve had older Bosch saws, the 12” glide, a Kapex and quite a few Dewalts (including the sweeet XPS dual bevel 12” two blade $249 deal being shipped to me as I speak)

My Bosch 12” glide, no matter the adjustment, would not cut true in some situations. Nice sharp blade, good technique and I could adjust away the bad cuts. It’s be perfect at some settings and 1/8” out at others. Drove me batty.

It was a Costco display, but no obvious damage to it I could see

That’s one of the main reasons I never bought one. Despite some people fanatically defending the quality of these saws there are an unusually high amount of reports that it won’t cut true no matter what adjustments are made. And I didnt want to have to deal with that.

I’m bummed I missed the sale. I’ve been eyeing up that saw because I wanted to put it on a bench against a wall in a garage. The sliding mechanism of the Dewalt saws takes up too much room. Can anything think of any other good miter saws that can be placed against a wall but have a large horizontal capacity?

There is one that just came out recently that has a similar configuration.

The Delta Cruzer. People are saying good things about them. Even more cut capacity than the Bosch I believe.

The cybersale coupon applied to the Cruzer saws too. I really wanted to pick up a new saw but the cruzer is relatively new (and no laser/ shadow line), and too many mixed reviews about the Bosch.

I have yet to hear anyone give the Delta a good review, everyone so far says its pretty terrible that I’ve seen post about it.

Too soon to tell I guess. I’ve only heard good things.
