Last holiday season, the Bosch GLM 15 compact laser measurer was on sale for $40, and then $35, prompting me to recommend it in a deal post: “Seriously, Just Buy One.”
I recently wrote about the new Bosch GLM 20, a slightly better featured model. At the time, the GLM 15 dropped in price to $30, but before I could post about it in a deal post, it went back up to $50.

Well, the Bosch GLM 15 is on sale for $30 again, through June 19th, 2016, as part of an Amazon Father’s Day promo.
This is one of the best and non-gimmicky holiday-emphasized tools I have ever seen. And I do love using it. It fits comfortably in my pocket, it’s easy to use, and although some might consider it spartanly featured, it satisfies most of my quick indoors measurement needs. There are times when I need more features, but that’s why Bosch has a range of different models with different capabilities.
The Bosch GLM 15 has a 50-foot range.
If you have ever considered buying a laser distance measuring tool, or want something smaller and simpler for when your better featured laser measurer is tied up elsewhere, definitely considering buying one of these.

It has also dropped in price at Lowes. So if you need it right quick, or have a coupon or military, that might be the place to go.
At $30, and pretty accurate measurement, this seems like a no-brainer gift for someone or yourself.

i read in the manual that your really only suppose to use it in indoors. Is that true? Is there a fluxuation in accuracy when its bright outside?

I have the GLM15 that I got on sale near this price a while ago. My biggest gripes are the lack of backlighting and everything in feet and inches (when I just want inches).
I would spend the extra $20 and get the GLM20 model.
PS. Even though I gripe about the GLM15, it is so much more accurate and quicker than measuring with a tape measurer that its amazing.

+/- 1/8″ seems like kind of a lot. The other Bosch models are all +/- 1/16″ which seems more useful. It’s probably fine for measuring a room but I don’t know that that’s enough accuracy to say cut a shelf to fit as shown in the promo photos.
Anybody have such a device that can give some perspective?

Besides just getting room dimensions my biggest use so far has been measuring for cutting baseboards and crown moulding. The tolerance has been close enough that everything I’ve cut fit exactly as intended.
Having said that, the device is most useful for measuring distance between two points and not measuring the length of something. Let me give you an example. You want to know how long a board is. To use this you need to but the board up against something, place the back of the GLM15 against the far edge. Not something that’s convenient to do. Tape works better.
But lets say you need to cut a shelf for a cabinet, you but the back of the GLM15 against one side of the cabinet press the button. Do that in the front and back and you have how long you need to cut your shelf.
So for me it supplements a tape and is plenty accurate enough. Shelf, Baseboard, Crown, all easily within tolerance. Fine woodworking with accuracy for joinery more complex than a butt joint, use something else.
