Bosch’s JS470EB barrel-grip jigsaw has dropped in price to just around $119. If you order before 12/22/14, then the $25 off $100+ holiday promo discount lowers the price down to $94.
I chatted with Bill about this jigsaw back in June and July, when it was priced at $140-150. It’s a great jigsaw that features a barrel grip that many users prefer, a 7-amp motor, tool-free blade change mechanism, variable speed dial, 4 orbital settings, precision blade plunging system, and low-vibration design.
This model first came out in 2010, along with a D-handle version, JS470E, which is still at its regular price of ~$145. The barrel-grip jigsaw is eligible for the $25 off $100 discount promo, although the D-handle version is not.
Bosch built these jigsaws in Switzerland when they first came out, and unless something changed they are still built there.
I tested this model briefly a while back, and really liked how comfortable it felt to use. I generally prefer D-handle jigsaws over barrel-grip ones, but that’s more born from habit and I my preference has slowly been changing. Many woodworkers prefer barrel-grip jigsaws due to the lower center of gravity which lends to better precision and control.

The JS470 saws are fantastic performers that offer high precision and great features. Both the JS470E and JS470EB are highly regarded in user reviews.
The JS470 is Bosch’s second-most-premium jigsaw. At one point it was their top saw, but the JS572 that came out later boasts a couple of additional benefits. However, the JS572 is more than double the price ($285 via Amazon before $25 promo discount).

I’ve always used a D-handle jigsaw. Any folks who have/have used a barrel jigsaw want to comment on the usability and ergonomics?

I find that the barrel grip is easier to control fro many cuts – particularly when coping moldings. We fitted a number of our older Bosch barrel-grip jig saws with a Collins coping foot just for this purpose

I feel like I can see the work a little bit better with the barrel grip. Also, like Stuart said, my hand is closer to the workpiece so I feel like I have more control over the jigsaw. Lastly, the barrel grip is great for cutting from underneath.

I have owned d grips and this particular bosch barrel grip, and I prefer the barrel grip. It puts your hand closer to the work piece, and the center of gravity of the tool, which I think helps a lot with one handed operation. As for this particular model, this is one heck of a deal for a high quality saw with plenty of power. I’d pay $150 for this again in a heartbeat, but at $94 it’s a steal.

I have an old Bosch B4301 barrel grip and a D handle that I bought at the same time. I prefer the barrel grip as I feel it gives me better control. I have a crew lead that prefers the D handle because he says its more comfortable. These where both made in the US I would guess in the mid 90’s and I have never had an issue with either. I wan’t to upgrade but I just don’t see a reason to other than the new units weigh far less.

Bosch tools are generally manufactured in China, like most other power tools these days.

I believe this is made in Switzerland – at least, the 572 model is. And not all Bosch is made in China

Really? That’s not my exprience. In the local hardware store they had Bosch tools from Germany, Malaysia, USA, Russia and Switzerland. The only Chinese one was an inspection camera.

I have the Swiss made 1590evs, d-handle. It was a definite upgrade from the Grizzly model I used for years, with its screw secured blade holder. I would have preferred the barrel grip, but it was too cheap to pass up when faced with a big project. Does get as much use, but it is a pleasure to use. If these are still Swiss made, then I would expect it be just as sturdy.

I have a Bosch D-grip jigsaw, and have always regretted the purchase. A friend has a Bosch barrel grip, which I love. Basically, the D-grip is just too big for my hand, despite being able to palm a basketball (at least one that is adequately grippy). I just can’t comfortably reach the ‘lock’ button without repositioning my hand Maneuvering the tool through a cut is also not ergonomically comfortable for me. The barrel grip, on the other hand, is incredibly comfortable for me. I have considerable tool envy, but can’t justify the switch for the amount I use a jigsaw. Love the barrel grip.

I’ve had this saw for prob close to two years. Originally I was a d handle fan but once I learned how to cut with it inverted I don’t think I’d ever go back to d handle. I love the saw, the only thing about it that isn’t great is the blower but since I cut with it upside down that’s not really a big deal to me anyway.

I haven’t had a need to purchase a jigsaw; like many, perhaps, I’ve only used a D handle in the past. From the comments, I can see that the barrel grip design would make sense, given it’s lighter weight and better mobility. My question then would be, how is it for vibration? Given that it’s a Bosch, I’m assuming it’s not that big of an issue. Any comments?
