New Bosch NanoBlade Mini Chainsaws for DIYers and all Their Wood-Cutting Needs

Bosch NanoBlade Pistol Grip Saw

Over in Europe, Bosch has come out with new NanoBlade micro chainsaw technology, and has put it to use in 3 DIY-level tools. Seeing as how these are “Bosch green” tools, if we see them in the USA, it might be under Skil branding.

Not to distract you, but the first thing I thought of was this video, which I posted briefly about 4-1/2 years ago:

There are 3 new NanoBlade-equipped saws:

  • EasySaw 12 cordless multi-saw (shown above)
  • EasySaw 50
  • MaxSaw 50

Bosch says that the new EasySaw 12 cordless NanoBlade multi-saw is particularly suited to freehand cuts.

As for the 12 in the model number, the EasySaw 12 is powered by a 10.8V 2.5Ah Li-ion rechargeable battery pack which has a max voltage of 12V right after charging.

While NanoBlade sounds great, I’m sure they could have come up with something a little catchier than the EasySaw 12.

Zero maintenance is needed. NanoBlade chains don’t require oiling, sharpening, or tensioning.

The NanoBlade chain is user replaceable, but should deliver plenty of use before a replacement is needed.

Up to 100 meters of laminate can be cut and up to 100 meters of softwood can be sawn without needing to replace the saw blade.

Why would you want to use something like this? With a constant circular motion to the blade, compared to the oscillatory motion of a jig saw or reciprocating saw, or other similar powered saw with back-and-forth cutting motion, NanoBlade saws should greatly cut down on hand vibrations.

Bosch NanoBlade Jig Saws

There will also be 2 jig saw-style models, EasySaw 50 and MaxSaw 50. Bosch says that these models should be great for tasks such as cutting shelves or flooring.

Both models feature 500W motors and dust extraction adapter to help control dust and debris.

There’s also a splinter guard for cleaner cuts, a blower function for easier visibility, and “Cut Control” transparent extension that makes it easier to guide the saw along a cut line.

Both tools can make plunge cuts into wood, which is good for creating cut-outs in the middle of a workpiece. The base plate is curved at the rear to make this easier.

The MaxSaw50 features a different base that can be tilted for cutting grooves and making miter cuts at 0 to 45° angles. There is also a base plate extension that makes the MaxSaw 50 compatible with Bosch tracksaw guide rails.

Several different blades are available for these 2 saws:

  • NanoBlade Wood Basic 50 (included)
  • Nano Blade Wood Speed 50
  • NanoBlade Hard Wood Basic 50 (bimetal)

The cordless EasySaw 12 comes with a NanoBlade Wood Speed 65 blade.

ETA: October 2016 in Europe

First Thoughts

Sounds like a great idea, I want one! I really wish there was a video demo showing the new NanoBlade saws in action.

Just… don’t put it into your pocket.

Wishful thinking perhaps but something like this would be a great idea for sheet metal fab work. Too bad there doesn’t appear to be a NanoBlade metal cutting blade. Like a portable hand held mini band saw of this size would be awesome. Much much smaller than the cordless bandsaws out currently.

I’d have to try one out but I could see the saw 50 being better than a jig saw in some applications. I’d like to see if it would cut thinner board easier and cleaner than a jig.

not sure how that blade will make turns though. Would be interesting to see a tool that used the same base and motor etc – but interchangeable gear boxes/drives so you could use a nano-chain or a jig drive. I know I oft ask too much but I can see that sort of thing working out in this case.

meh – still would want to try one out.

I imagine the advantages over a jig saw might include: plunge cut ability, lack of wobbling on thin materials, and faster material removal rates.

Still, the case for this tool over a jigsaw doesn’t look too strong. It might survive in certain niches, like the how oil-pulse driver sells in an impact driver filled world.

Fun fact: the very first chainsaws were actually developed to be (relative to today’s wood chainsaws) tiny surgical instruments. So, this in essence reflects a return of the chainsaw to its primordial roots.

Also, someone on a major auction site is right now listing a pre-production M18 9.0 battery for the lofty sum of about $300. The big 9.0 hasn’t officially been released yet, so if they are legitimately letting someone sell this thing, it must be close to release time.

Holy crap that’s a big nono. Selling any sort of pre production product is a big liability. Automakers shred any pre production car without a vin there was a big stink about Dodge wanting vipers back from auto shop schools because people were driving them and wrecking them. http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/news/a7277/chrysler-crushing-first-vipers-video/

For cars, definitely, but I am not too sure if that would apply to consumer products like power tools. Cars have federally required standards for emissions, fuel economy, safety, and so on which require extensive testing. Consumer products like tools on the other hand, don’t really have too many federal regulations affecting them. Things like UL testing are more voluntary than anything else.

I am wondering if this is a scam, too. The person who is listing it seems to have a great feedback record, but it does seem odd that this would get onto the market this way.

Hello Stuart and Posters- I don’t really post much but love everything about the site, with the exception of the impact to my wallet. As the lucky suburban Milwaukee resident who owns the pre-production 9.0 battery I can assure you I have no photoshop skills but it very much could have been the one used for testing from the summer show. I simply have no use for it as an avid DIYer who has pretty ran out of projects at home. It is an amazing battery. Also not sure if you saw but the line of Fuel Nailers was officially announced.

I’m gonna guess you’re probably throwing your friend that works there under the bus by trying to sell a prototype battery before the product is actually released for purchase. Seems like a horrible idea.

You know, all these awesome EDM tools are giving me traumatic flashbacks of the 90’s and 00’s, when so many of us were drooling at EDM and JDM-only cars that couldn’t or wouldn’t be sold in the US.

Rides like the Skyline Gt-R, Focus RS, Lancer EVO, WRX, Clio V6 and a whole host of other Gran Turismo favorites used to beckon from abroad, until finally some companies started to get their act together and offer goodies like this in the US.

Perhaps maybe tool companies will acknowledge the glaringly obvious in the same way the car companies ultimately did?

If this were posted at the end of the month, I’d be sure I was looking at an early April Fools’ joke. It looks too tiny to be functional and I can’t imagine it holding up. Having said that, I WANT ONE AND WANT IT NOW, preferably the corded version.

Not to be skeptical, but I’m skeptical. Does this sound and look fake to anyone else? If it were real, doesn’t it seem like they would be blasting this technology with marketing, as it seems like a pretty impressive feat to create something like this?

I wouldn’t be so critical until I knew and understood the facts. I travel to Europe quite a bit and see lots of things not available in the USA – including both tools and big prices for tools because of the included VAT. I’m never quite sure about the reasons that companies like Bosch don’t bring some items across the pond. But they may consider things like the size of our market, the need to redesign for US electric standards, the need to meet US regulations and licensing , need to translate meeting DIN standards into meeting UL or other US certifications, having to deal with a USA litigious society and so on. I really don’t think that folks sit around in a board room in Gerlingen and think about how they can frustrate the US tool user by not exporting their latest tools.

Interesting new tools! If the EasySaw 12 does turn up in the USA under Skil branding, does anyone know if the Skill 12 volt battery is interchangeable with Bosch 12 volt batteries? It’s a bit of a pain that the Dremel 8220 12 volt battery isn’t exactly the same as the Bosch 12 volt battery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GMtv20-qE

Bosch has 3 models divided by the covers: 1 Bosch Blue , 2 Dremel are equal to Bosch Green and Skil. The end which goes in the charger goes in both the 1.5Amp charger as well the 3Amp charger. But with a Dremel tool all battery covers can be modified to fit in all 3 platforms, not the prettiest but most practical. Especially with the 4AmpHour T-packs more lifetime with all tools.

I was intrigued by the idea, as I do Landscape Maintenance as my primary livelihood, I do a fair amount pruning. Looking at this further this is probably best for the shop. I’m curious if the replacement chains pricing will be like Ink jet cartridges and oscillating tool blades, I know that normal chainsaw blades are spendy.

As a followup, what I do use for pruning in a cordless tool, is a DeWalt 18v Lion sawzall with a PorterCable 4/5tpi 9″ pruning blade both Amazon and Lowe’s carries them about $3 a blade and they are wicked sharp and triple ground.

I hang my Sawzall (with trigger locked) on a Bigg Lugg Power Tool Holder Belt Hook, when I’m on a ladder or in a tree thinning branches. I’m planning on getting the smaller DeWalt 12vMax DCS310 Pivot Reciprocating saw, as I think it would be more versatile and definitely lighter.

Think I’ll stick with an angle grinder with an Inox thin cutting blade and a length of angle as I work steel 98% of the time!

Great for wood workers though. Less jaggeder edges to clean up.

Bosch seem to be coming out with a lot of new tools this year.

After a bit of thought… I think Bosch should send this over to Dremel. Having a NanoBlade Saw Attachment like their old MS400 would be great. Turn your Rotary Tool into a Mini Chainsaw for all this work. Perhaps even make a universal T-Shank Jigsaw Blade attachment, and a Universal Reciprocating Saw Attachment as well? Wouldn’t be difficult to turn Reciprocation into Rotation engineering-wise, and it can be very compact as well. Also getting everyone, regardless of Brand, hooked on the NanoBlade system.

But, that’s just me, I guess. Regardless of my wishful thinking, I genuinely don’t like this as a dedicated tool, let alone from Bosch/Skil. I prefer Dremel’s precision, and DeWALT’s Durability to Bosch. Bosch makes AWESOME Blades and Consumables, but I don’t like their motors or body types in general. That’s just me.

Have purchased and used one of these. It beats conventional jigsaws hands down for reliable straight cuts, especially on thicker wood. It doesn’t cut tight curves at all.
So far the blade is standing up well to use, but I always make sure the blade guard goes back on after use.
Where it stands out is for plunge cutting, and given the nature of the blade it is possible to reverse the cut to move it back to an accurate mark (I wouldn’t reverse cut a long distance because you can’t really see where it is going).
    Hope this helps.
