Bosch Oscillating Tool Depth Stop Guide

Bosch’s new depth stop kit works with their MX30E and MXH180 oscillating multi-tools to provide improved cutting depth adjustment and control. It comes with two different stops – a straight stop for use with typical plunge-cut blades and a curved stop for use with (circular) segmented blades.

With a typical plunge-cutting blade, cutting depth can be set from 1 to 41mm. With a typical 3.5″ segmented blade, cutting depth can be set from 1 to 16mm. The stops are both toothed to prevent shifting during use.

First Impression

This looks like a really solid accessory design. It attaches to Bosch’s latest generation of oscillating multi-tools with a quick-action cam lock lever, and the cutting depth can be set with a press of a button.

Porter Cable’s PCE605K and Dewalt’s upcoming DWE315K oscillating tools each come bundled with a cutting guide and depth stop. Porter Cable’s must be fastened with a machine screw and hex key, but it is not yet clear whether Dewalt’s guide stop has been made tool-free or also requires a hex key for installation and removal.

In theory, I like Bosch’s depth stop design a lot better than Porter Cable’s and Dewalt’s. It’s tool-free for easy-on and easy-off, and is an optional accessory that isn’t factored into the price of each tool kit (at least not presently). Adjustment seems limited, so it appears to be just a cutting depth stop, and not a cutting guide as well.

I’m wondering if this can be fitted to the Ridgid Multi-tool. I definitely like this product and assume that Ridgid will follow suit with a like accessory item. But since I own the Ridgid tool, they most likely will not. Seems to always be that way.
