Bosch ROS20VSC 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander

Scott wrote in about a deal on a Bosch sander that he’s wondering is too good to pass up.

I’ve been a fan of your site for a while and gathered that Bosch is a reliable brand, especially for homeowner DIY tasks. I’ve had my eye or the below Bosch Random Orbital Sander and it seems to have dropped quite a bit to $59. I don’t have a need for this RIGHT now but at that price is this something worth snatching up now?

The model he’s talking about is the Bosch ROS20VSC that we said would be our best random orbit sander under $100 pick.

I’ve had great experiences with my Bosch finish sander, and would also have a Bosch random orbit sander in my kit if Home Depot had carried them back when I bought my Ridgid sander with a gift card.

This sander is normally priced at $69, but now it’s $59. $10 savings isn’t huge, but that’s still $10 extra to spend on sanding sheets or other accessories.

Update: The discount went away for a short time but has returned: “From March 1, 2015, to April 30, 2015, save on select Bosch tools when shipped and sold by Amazon.com. Discount already applied in displayed prices.”

I own quite a few tools that I bought on sale because they were on sale, but haven’t used yet. The prices were great, and I thought I’d definitely use the tools, but things don’t always turn out that way.

I don’t think this deal is too good to pass up. If you pass on it and regret the decision, you can always buy it later. If the $59 price on Amazon is due to a temporary price reduction, then having to spend an extra $10 later on won’t be too painful on the wallet.

Other retailers still show a price of $69, and so I’m thinking the discount might be temporary. There’s no real way to tell.

Update: As mentioned, the price reduction is part of a new March thru April 2015 sales promo. There are a couple of other tools currently being discounted as part of the same promo. See other Bosch sale items.

This deal was originally posted on Feb 2nd, 2015, and republished on March 2nd, 2015 when the deal returned as part of a larger sale.

Looks like it’s back up to $69. You can still wait till the next $20 off $100 and get a few other things with it, like the Bosch multitool blades that were tested on this website a while back. I’ve had this sander for a couple of years and I like it pretty well.

It’s 1:26pm on February 2, 2015 in California right now and I see the price on Amazon as back to $69.00.

And, yes, I have some tools that were too good to pass up but I don’t use, or that replaced a item that worked fine, but usually these were ridiculously cheap and I figure that when version I have breaks, I’ll use the new one, or have the old one as a back up or to loan out. Usually these come from the clearance section as a big box store, though.

I picked one of these up as a refurb at my local Sears Outlet for $29.99. It is a great sander, it looked brand new and came with a new backing plate and storage bag. It also cones with a shop vac hose coupling. I did a large project with it and no more worries about dust. I am very happy with my purchase.

I bought two of these at Lowes mid last year for $59. They’ve been that price ever since.

Yes, I see them at Lowes for $59 too. I think there are two versions of this sander though. One that comes with a soft case (bag) and one that doesn’t. I see it on Lowes now for $63.72

I prefer those bags over hard molded cases. I keep all those hard cases but most are ridiculously oversized and inefficient.

Mine both came with the soft case. Extra 5% off with Lowes card.

I have one of these and they are great. I got my weekly Lowes Flyer the other day and it is showing $59 as the “New Lower Price”.

The above link is a very slightly different model number. Not sure what the difference is.

That one doesn’t have the “kit” or the carrying bag. Which would be fine with me.

I lied. I missed the 10 and 20. The ROS20 looks to be variable speed while the ROS10 isn’t.

Yep, as Tyler says, the ROS10 is a single-speed model, while the ROS20 is variable speed. Not everyone will need the variable speed, but for a couple of bucks more it does come in handy.

As an alternative to the deal above you can buy the same ROS20VS unit for $44 at CPO outlets. It’s refurbished but I have never had a problem with them. I have at least four different portable Bosch tools (12v) and they appeared brand new with accessories and have not failed me yet, even after building two houses with them. Though they only come with a 60 day money back warranty.

I think this comes with access. & soft zippered bag.

Would this sander be up to sanding cabinet/bookcase sized workpieces, or should I look to 6″ random orbits if my budget permits? It looks like a good deal, but if I just wanted to own one sander of this type for residential use, would this be the one?

Just got it for $59, thanks! Now, what pads do you recommend with it? Does it realy matter, or should I just swing by home depo and pick up whatever’s on sale?
