Bosch 18V Wireless Impact Giveaway, plus Bonus Sweepstakes

Dec 15, 2014 Stuart 168 Comments

If you buy something through our links, ToolGuyd might earn an affiliate commission.

By now you might have noticed that Bosch is an advertiser on ToolGuyd for a couple of weeks this quarter. The ad appears in the sidebar on the right side of the page, half-way down. Don’t worry if you look and don’t see it, as it only appears sometimes.

The ad promotes their sweepstakes, which you could enter to win select power tools or the grand prize of a RAM 1500 truck.

If you’re interested: Bosch Sweepstakes Details & Entry

You can enter the Bosch sweepstakes once a day for more chances to win.

ToolGuyd doesn’t include editorial content as part of ad deals – that’s just not how we roll. Bosch asked nicely if we would post about the sweepstakes, I said probably. I decided I would, because hey, it’s a reasonable promo, and wouldn’t it be cool if ToolGuyd readers won some new Bosch tools? Even better – what if a ToolGuyd reader won that RAM truck?! That’d be awesome.

But I then thought to myself that I could just post about the sweepstakes, but why not do a little more. So I asked if we could get some new Bosch products for a ToolGuyd-specific giveaway. A little back and forth, and they agreed to provide two cordless tool kit prizes, just for you guys.

I had to press Bosch a little bit to get them to set aside some extra prizes just for ToolGuyd readers, and then again to double up and provide two kits for this giveaway. If you don’t typically enter giveaways, consider making an exception so that I don’t look bad. Who knows, you might win!

The Prize

Bosch 18V Hyrbid Impact Wireless Charger Kit

A Bosch 18V brushless hybrid impact driver and wrench wireless charging bundle, model IDH182WC-102.

Learn more about the hybrid impact
Learn more about Bosch wireless charging technology

These kits sell for $300 via Amazon.

This is so new that I haven’t even gotten my hands on a test sample yet. These kits, and the wireless charging tech, just hit the market this month.

Why it’s Hot

Bosch 18V EC Brushless Hybrid Impactor IDH182-01

First, you get Bosch’s latest 18V brushless hybrid impact driver and wrench. It has a 1/4″ hex chuck AND a 1/2″ square drive. This makes it a great tool for driving screws, lag bolts, and all kinds of fasteners. It’s not meant for automotive work, but you might be able to use it on looser lug nuts.

Max torque is 1650 in-lbs, and there are two lower speed and torque settings that improve control and reduce risk of fastener damage when working with smaller screws and bolts.

Bosch 18V Wireless Charging

This would be a nice giveaway prize by itself, but you also get a wireless charging package that includes a wireless charger, charging frame, and 18V 2.0Ah battery pack.

We’re trying to convince Bosch to splurge and provide the wall and bench-mountable drill and driver holster with each prize package as well, but right now that’s uncertain.

I have briefly tested the hybrid impact tool, and really like it. It’s not as compact as other impact drivers, but it’s a nice 2-in-1 combo tool with great power, ergonomics, and runtime. I haven’t tested the wireless/inductive charging tech yet, but my experience with Bosch tools makes me confident that it’s as good as it looks.

I have a wireless/inductive charger for my cell phone, and it’s a HUGE convenience. With Bosch’s system, it means that the battery gets recharged, at least partially, every time you put the drill or driver down.

I am excited about this new inductive charging system, but know that not all users will see or reap the benefits of the new system. Even if you don’t quite have an immediate use for the wireless charging tech, you can use the 18V battery and tool with any of Bosch’s other 18V batteries, chargers, and tools.

How to Enter

Leave a comment below, telling me what you would use the prize package for. Or simply tell me what you think about the wireless charging technology.

As another entry option, how about a haiku poem? Maybe a knock-knock joke? I read EVERY comment and entry, and appreciate a change in pace every now and then.

Please don’t just say “I want to win,” or “pick me,” or “throw my name into the hat,” or anything that effect.

Winner Selection

(2) winners will be selected at random.

Rules

You must have a non-PO Box continental USA address. Entry period ends Monday December 15th, 2014. One entry per person.

Prize Fulfillment

Bosch is supplying the products for the giveaway and will ship the prizes directly to each winner.

Sweepstakes & More Chances to Win

Bosch Lead the Charge Sweepstakes H2014

As mentioned, there are extra chances to win some new Bosch tools, through their separate sweepstakes. You can enter the sweepstakes EVERY DAY for even more chances to win.

I entered once to check out the process, although I’m probably not eligible to win anything. You supply your contact info, and then click another button to enter. It says you have to watch a quick video before entering, but I don’t think the entry process is set up to require this.

The next day, you simply have to “log in” with your email address to make an additional entry.

  1. But it's me!

I’m a little more convinced of the usefulness of this addition to Bosch’s lineup, as my previous comments made clear. The convenience of setting it down and charging, as you note does help push me further. I have all Bosch cordless drills and impact drivers (two of each, although one impact driver is an older NiCd model my son will soon inherit), but would gladly take a set of the new models off Bosch’s hands, giving me the chance to pass along more tools to the children.

I can see that this may be the future of tool charging systems. As we always strive to be more efficient, just setting a tool down and having it charge, can be a life-job saver. Do you ever forget to bring that 2nd battery to the job and then your primary runs low. This will allow you to charge between uses, maintaining that work flow. Just like any charging system, at the end of the day you still have to remember to place your low batteries on the chargers. Maybe in the future they can install timers and alarms into the powered end of the systems to remind you charge.

Thanks for posting the sweepstakes link. It is something I would have missed otherwise.

I have had spectacular bad luck with Bosch cordless offerings in the past, and while the wireless charging design interests me, the engineering design issues I have had with Bosch cordless motors and the failures of three tools with less than 30 hours use on each (one of which was the replacement for the first failure and failed in less than ten) will keep me from buying into this system. I very much liked the engineering of the tools overall (outside of the motors themselves), but the motor failures shifted my focus to other brands.

I would, however, very much like to put one of these to the test, if nothing other than to see if it survives my personal bad luck with the brand. 😉

Quite frankly when I picked up my last Bosch Drill and Impact Driver set a couple weeks ago I was seriously considering this one with the hybrid chuck. Due to the costs I decided not to splurge since I can just use impact rated hex to socket adapters or my pneumatic impact. That said, I still want it. I think there is a lot of merit to it.

The wireless/inductive charging is also something I’m excited to see. It’s definitely not much of a benefit to the contractor types, but it would work well in my shop setting. During project assembly I can ensure that my battery stays charged throughout the whole day. I’m also suspecting it will help me keep track of it better. Instead of laying it down just out of reach or hiding it under a part it will always be on the charging station.

The wireless charging system is interesting. Most wireless phone charger only delivers no more than 10W of power. I do not know how fast will the wireless charger charge, but it looks like to have more than 50W of power. That is quite impressive.

I hope that inductive charging catches on with power tools AND it becomes standardized. Many of us have dreamed about batteries that are compatible among different brands. I’m not holding my breath for that, but I think standardized inductive charging may be possible. Brands can keep their proprietary battery packs and perhaps consumers will get the convenience of needing just one charger.

I for one love my various devices that charge with the ubiquitous USB format. Sure, the batteries often aren’t interchangeable (if even removable), but I don’t have to keep track of a dozen different proprietary chargers and cables. That’s a huge benefit of a standard USB format, in my mind. I’d love to see that in power tools with inductive charging.

      Eric and Jim,
Induction is not a new technology. However, the ability to detect foreign objects on the charging pad is where Bosch has created something special. The system is just as efficient as a traditional charging system. Empty batteries are charged to 80% in 25 min. and 100% in 50 min. The batteries will last just as long as traditionally charged batteries. This system is made for convenience to save steps for the user which in turns save time on the job. This equates to saving the user money per job. What you will notice by using this system is depending on the job, you’ll never take the battery off the tool. It’s just a great compliment to the Bosch line up and future of 18V power tools.

I think the wireless charging is a fantastic innovation. I have used inductive charging on cell phones and some non-consumer applications, and it is really good for workflow.

I work in automotive testing and it would be really nice to always have the driver charged up and at hand. Now it is always a question if our tools are charged, and changing a battery is not a one-handed job.

That being said, if I won this, i would keep it at home.

I’d love to win the hybrid driver, mostly for the wrench aspect, as I recently got the DeWalt XR Premium set and don’t actually have any sort of impact wrench at this time. In truth, it was a very close decision between the DeWalt and the Bosch. Oh, and I did enter the Ram contest a while back. I suspect if I won that my F150 would be a bit peeved.

I can’t say that I’m excited about the wireless charging, as I haven’t monkeyed around with it for any of my 2 (3 if I count a Bluetooth earset I rarely use) electronic devices, but it does sound like cool tech that may end up supplanting regular chargers at some point. One question I have is this: does the battery have to be in the tool to charge on the pad? I suspect not, but would like some confirmation.

I would use the 18v impact driver to drive the bigger screws that put some strain on my 12v Bosch. This past weekend I was sending 4″ screws into some very old rough cut 2×4’s and the 12v did it but it was unhappy and chewed through batteries. I would also try using it for automotive work like changing brakes because the motor is smaller than an air impact wrench so it can get into more places.

The wireless charging is interesting but I doubt it has substantial benefit for me. Most of my work it out in random places far from a wall charger. The best case for the wireless charger is if you mainly use the tool near a workbench. If it had a 12v car adapter that could also be useful for the on-call handyman type. For me, the li-ion batteries don’t discharge too much sitting in the case and I don’t think leaving a battery on a charger 24/7 is good for longevity.

Still holding out for the 10.8/12v brushless impact driver from Bosch (PS42 anyone?), but for the time, making do with the PS41. I always keep the thing in my toolbag along with a spare battery. Its good for %99 of tasks I do involving fastening (or unfastening) stuff. Otherwise out comes the big 18 volt impact or drill/driver. As 18v tools are getting lighter and more compact, its getting really temping to retire the 12v stuff and just starting carrying around something like this 18v hybrid impact driver/wrench with the 5-cell battery. Only a pound heavier and not that much bigger in overall size!

Most power tools do not survive long in the Marine industry hazards include fiberglass dust, saltwater, South FL heat, resin, adhesive, solvents . Most employees use Ryobi’s and call them disposable and have makita for clean jobs I have milwaukee’s. Will an inductive charger be able to handle all the grime and dust? Can a bosch handle the abuse? If I win I will put the bosch through a rigorous torture test.

Currently rebuilding my second house in FL. The house is located across the country far away from my main tools and I have to check in tools on the flight with me. I brought the Bosch 12v impact & drill version and I really love it but it would be awesome to be able have a bit more oomph for tackling the big and really tough tasks during framing and roughing.

Also looking forward to one day adding to the family the 12v reciprocating saw.

    Joke of the day:
“One day a man goes to a pet shop to buy a parrot. The assistant takes the man to the parrot section and asks the man to choose one. The man asks, ”How much is the yellow one?”
The assistant says, ”$2000.” The man is shocked and asks the assistant why it’s so expensive. The assistant explains, ”This parrot is a very special one. He knows typewriting and can type really fast.”
”What about the green one?” the man asks.
The assistant says, ”He costs $5000 because he knows typewriting and can answer incoming telephone calls and takes notes.”
”What about the red one?” the man asks.
The assistant says, ”That one’s $10,000.”
The man says, ”What does HE do?”
The assistant says, ”I don’t know, but the other two call him boss.””

Just thinking about the convenience of the wireless technology has really got my attention. I started dropping hints to the wife earlier this month once I heard about it as a good idea for Xmas. I figure if I can win the impact driver, then I can always have her buy me the table saw I have my eye on.

I think the wireless charging technology is really cool. I honestly didn’t think we would see it in power tools this soon to be honest. I would use it for when im installing telco racks and other low voltage installs in do on a daily basis. I could keep this in my tuck so it would be topped off all the time, and I could just grab my drill and go. I might try and mod it to some kind of tool cart also. I would have to have one first to think about how to lay things out.

The next project on the list is installing a 10×18 deck. An impact driver with this kind of power would be amazing! Having spent a lot of time reading your blog (reason I have the Milwaukee 12v drill/driver/impact), I know how much faith you have in Bosch’s line of both corded and cordless tools. I like the way they LEDs are implemented. The handle ergonomics look good. If that’s an on/off switch on the base for the LEDs, thats not a bad idea if it shuts off after a certain time that is greater that the usual 10/20 seconds. If the fuel-gate is in the base of the drill as oppose to the battery, not bad either. Not sure what the red snout piece is all about though. Just by looks the brushless motor looks beefy as well. The wireless charging technology is welcomed too. Can’t wait when they have a build in speaker that beeps twice once the battery has 10% left of capacity…or on the charger when it is fully charge …..i’m working – hear two beeps, “ohhh my battery is charged, thanks charger” lol

Overall, looks nice and owning one might make me a fan boy. Let me tell you, if I was to win (doubtful) the very minute I open the box, in 5 minutes it would be all taken apart to look at it’s innards.

    A New Tool

    You really need that?
    She just doesn’t understand.
    There’s never enough.

Regarding inductive charging, I have to think the max charging rate is more restricted than direct wiring. And I prefer the simplicity of the solid connection, the convenience of wireless charging isn’t enough to sway me. But, wireless charging could pave the way for hermetically sealed waterproof tools. I’m sure there’s an industry out there that could make use of that.

      Hi Nick,

I sent this to Eric and Jim in a earlier post:

      I hope this helps…

Wireless charging technology at this stage is only starting to develop its potential. While it may seem gimmicky at the moment, I wouldn’t be surprised to see in the potential of say true cordless, battery-less power tools in the distance future, where if you remain within a defined “charging area”, your power tool is powered wirelessly without the need for clumsy, batteries. And only if you need to work outside/mobile, you would need to bring batteries with you… Now that would be a REAL game changer.

Why kind of engineer is God?

three engineers are sitting around drinking and BS’ing while bowling one night when the age old question arises – why type of engineer would God be? The Mechanical engineer starts off with, “when you look at the stress capabilities of the bones of the body, the way joints function for years, and the beauty of the plumbing that is the cardiovascular system – GOD must be an Mechanical engineer. Not so fast, the Electrical engineer says, none of those bits would have any controllability without the beauty of computing and electrical distribution that is the central nervous system. But off in the the corner the Civil engineer just laughs. You guys are funny you know, God must be a Civil engineer because only the greatest civil engineer in the world could put the world’s favorite amusement park right next to a waste dump and everyone think it a good idea.

I would use it to drive the screws and bolts&nuts rebuilding my garage workbench into something larger and more shelves then it currently has.

I am a carpenters apprentice, this would be great for the decks we build because it allows driving screws and structural lag bolts. As for my opinion on the tech, I’m glad they are trying to innovate, and I understand the intended user, but for us the current tech isn’t practical. We would waste so much time running back and forth to the charging base. However if they could increase the range to 10-20ft it would be amazing. Most work we do concentrates in that radius, at least for a period of time. We could pull an extension cord with the area, plug in the base, and then it doesn’t matter if we are on a ladder or moving around- full power is maintained. I don’t know if this kind of electromagnetic energy is possible or safe, but this is the ideal scenario for our profession.

So I don’t actually even want the impact driver. I just got a set of Milwaukee 12v. BUT I want to win this for my coworker. Hes currently using an old nicad porter cable and its on its last leg. His girlfriend is pregnant and due any day so he can’t afford a new tool set even though he really needs one.

So I’d love to win this for him. Even though I know he would get mad at me for it. he hates people giving him stuff for free. He made me take $2 for a free set of screw drivers I got and gave to him.

I forgot what a haiku poem was, so no poem.

So I asked my 3-year old daughter for a knock knock joke.

    Her “Knock Knock”
    Me “Who’s there?”
Her “I’m here. Who else is home?”
    Me “…”
Her “HAHAHA you’re so silly daddy. Your breath smells like pickles”

And that is the story of my life.

Currently supplementing my ancient 18V DeWalt stuff with brushless 12V Bosch stuff. This would be a nice introduction to the 18V Bosch line. Would get automotive as well as home improvement use.

Have had good luck with Bosch in the past, specifically a Bosch 4000 table saw I’ve used for 10+ years. Not the most flashy in terms of features but always well designed and well made tools.

I would love to win one of these. I have been looking for an 18 volt impact wrench to go with my other Bosch 18 volt tools. I will use it with sockets with my classic cars and around the house. I love the square / hex drive hybrid.

Aside from my earlier-expressed desire to finally add a tool to my collection that I can say, with pride, still works in 20-some years (I love hearing “old timers” say that about their tools; reinforces that I’m actually investing in something instead of just buying something) … the wrench would come in handy removing the nuts from my front drivers side wheel, which is currently flat (THANKS, POTHOLE-INGNORING MAYOR … SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT TROLLEY YOU’RE GOING TO BUILD….) and bent my tire iron this morning!

Shameless self-promotion, yes. But more frustration. 🙂

Man oh man do I want this! Ive got a lil impact driver that works but with the power that this one has it’ll be a big help for my shop. Not to mention the convinience of the wireless charger will help a lot. I like that it comes with the big bag to carry around, don’t really like the boxes.

I’d love to try out both the brushless motor, as well as the wireless charging. I currently have the standard motor Bosch 18v impact and drill combo set. I love them, and would be interested to see what the brushless motor brings to the table.

I had a tablet (HP Touchpad) with an inductive charger, and it was really cool. Wish I’d kept it! Being able to just sit the tablet, or in this case, the tool, onto a charging pad between uses, would be great. No more grabbing a tool, only to have to run back to the shop after realizing you had the OLD battery in the tool, rather than your fresh, charged one.

Three archeologists were talking about their dig sites. The first said: ” I’ve found a bit of copper so my site is the beginning of wired technology” The second says: “I’ve found a bit of glass so my site is the beginning of fiber optic technology” The third said: “I’ve got you both beat. I haven’t found anything, the site is the beginning of wireless technology!”
Ok – you didn’t said it had to be a good joke.

I’ve had the 12v impact/driver kit for about a year now and have man has it seen a lot of use. I’ve also been very pleased with the L-Boxx system and their customer service. I’ve been slowly amassing a collection of Bosch tools for my garage and would love to have one of their brushless drills. I even entered their sweepstakes last spring from March to June, every-single-day…

This would be a great tool to add to my expanding selection of tools. In fact, this would be a great gift for my dad as he doesn’t have a good impact driver or wrench in his tool bag. He is always doing something for job when he travels, or stuff around the house to fix. This would be great, and the first thing he would grab out of his tool bag!

I love the idea of the wireless tool charging system. It works for phones, and tablets so why not for tools?

I would dance like this if I received a Bosch drill. I think the trickle like battery is very useful. I hope all other brands do the same. Maybe one day we’ll have something like that but strong enough to always keep the battery fully charged or recharges instantly (like a blue tooth powercell/generator) That’d be the life corded power without the cord.

First of all, Bosch has a reputation that precededs it self. It is a name that I trust. The wireless charging technology is the (in my opinion) greatest thing in tools since the SawStop. I’m an old school guy, and I’m really glad to see technology in the tool world. Not to mention, this is a multi perpose tool without getting gagetty. I believe I best use this tool building projects for my wife’s decoritiv painting group. I think I should add my honey-do list for which the Bosch IDH182WC-102 would be the perfect tool for.
    And many thanks to ToolGuyd.

This would be a great alternative to lugging a cord around with the Makita when installing timber screws through micro-lams – probably wouldn’t need to pre-drill, saving a step and time… Thanks for the opportunity!

Wow, cordless impact with wireless charging? As a sewage fighting super hero I could use this when battling those pesky bolts holding pumps and flanges together. I need any and all extra assistance when trying to keep the waste where it needs to be.

And now, I am off to save the world from sewage, one turd at a time.

My Milwaukee M12 Impact isn’t cutting it for some jobs. This would be the next step up which would cover all the work that I do. I really like the dual purpose bit holder. The design makes too much sense. Winning this would tip my future power tool purchases toward Bosch, which wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.

wireless charging has been used for years in the material handling industry so it makes complete sense to use it for power tools, phones ect. Should fortune shine on me with the Bosch prize, it will become my every day repair and project power tool.
