Costco Whalen Tool Cabinet Recall

Costco and Whalen are recalling their 72″ stainless steel tool cabinet.

Costco model number: 496675
Whalen model number: WSMTB72

On the inside of the right door there is a metal flange with a sharp edge that runs the length of the door. This poses a laceration hazard that has resulted in 11 reports of injuries, with 9 being minor cuts and 2 being deeper cuts that required stitches.

About 20,000 units are affected. These cabinets were sold for $500-$550 exclusively at Costco from March 2010 through October 2013. Tool cabinets sold after November 2013 do not have this issue.

If you have one of these tool cabinets, contact Whalen Storage for your free repair kit.

Thanks Stuart for the heads up. I helped my brother-in-law put one of these together last year….. now he knows about the recall. Much appreciated!

Other than the risk of death, are Whalen products any good? I’ve seen these at Costco and didn’t know the manufacturer so I was afraid to take the plunge

Costco and Sam’s Club tool storage products seem to have a good reputation. I’ve never tried them, so I’m going off what I have heard over the years.

    Stuart.

    Good information. Thanks.

My only question about all these similar Chinese sourced “stainless steel” tool storage cabinets is whether the internal parts are also actually stainless steel? Something I’m forever curious about. I mean really what’s the point otherwise?

    Carry on.

I don’t think the internals are stainless steel. The main point is about looks and resistance against environmental corrosion.

As previously mentioned, I put one of these cabinets together last year. Lots of nuts and bolts, and I don’t recall any sheet metal screws. All the drawer slides are held in place with bolts, not cheap stamped sheet metal snap-in connections, that are failure prone under load. The unit went together well and I thought at the time that the unit was solid and well constructed. The solid laminated wood top is really sweat! For what it’s worth…..

We purchased a Whalen 72 ” stainless steel tool cabinet #496675 at Cosco a few years ago.I have tried in the past to receive to the drawer tracks. One of my drawers tracks came apart and this is very frustrating. I am not looking for free repairs, but I would like to fix this problem .If you can ship me the repairs I would be willing to pay for them..Please send me an answer this time..Thanks ..Antoine..!!

I’m sorry, but ToolGuyd is a magazine and is not affiliated with Costco or Whalen.
