Craftsman 5 Gallon Bucket

Sears has come out with a USA-made Craftsman bucket, featuring vintage and newer style Craftsman logos in white.

The standard 5-gallon-sized bucket isn’t food-safe, but can hold tools, supplies, paint, dirt, garbage, or anything else you might use a bucket of this kind for.

It’s $3.99 and classified as a “hot buy,” meaning coupons and discounts might not apply. You can’t order it online, but it looks to be in stock at Sears stores.

After reading yesterday’s tale…. What would customer service do if I called and said ‘I have a hole in my bucket!’ ? Sir, let me get you to the parts department right away.

Even more curious would be taking it into the store, showing them the defective product, and seeing how they respond. Sad to even contemplate such things.

so at 4 dollars is this cheaper than the homer bucket or the one from lowes?

I might be. Looks better than the homer bucket from home depot

might be nice to have a different one – would be great with a lid too.

but you know red for this – blue for that. I might get one.

Pretty soon we’ll see these lined up in the aisles of the local Sears store to catch the drips from the leaking roof. Or, they’ll issue these to employees at headquarters to bail out the sinking ship. Buckets? Really?

Home Depot sells their orange 5-gal pail for $2.97. It (UPC 084305355546) is make by Leaktite in the USA. If you want an unadorned white pail from Leaktite – HD will sell you a carton of 10 for $39 ($3.90 each) or a 3-Pack of black ones for $14.97 ($4.99 each). I guess (LOL) the orange Homer pails come with a discount associated with your providing HD the free advertising when you carry it onto the jobsite.
Lowes blue bucket sells for $2.98 so maybe they didn’t get as good a deal as HD did with Leaktite – or maybe the free advertising is worth a penny less to them.

Buckets cost more around here in California. Lowes lower-quality bucket is $3.08 and the Home Depot bucket $3.18. The advertising on the HD bucket becomes somewhat of an issue when it is used conspicuously: My neighbor noted at a recent funeral that the workers filling a plot were using a number of buckets with “LET’S DO THIS” emblazoned on the side.

Some buckets are specially certified for use with food.

Lowes has an Encore one for $4.

I guess there’s more oversight regarding the plastic composition and potential contaminants during the production process.

Containers not actually marked as being good safe are not technically good safe. Like safe to store open (like milk!) “food” in.
Packaged foods and dry pet food are likely safe. I just wouldn’t be 100% comfortable knowing that the buckets might out gas for some unknown period of time…

Non-food grade HDPE containers may contain non-food-grade stabilizers, or colorants that can leach out into liquids stored within them. As Jim Felt says, HDPE has a fairly high outgassing rate which can be exacerbated by high temperatures. Perhaps of more concern is the type of mold release agent that was used in the manufacture of the pail. Some amount of that agent will sit on the surface of the pail and may be transferred to food.

Sears actually have a product in stock to take a photo of? That’s a novel concept.

Pic definitely looks like a photochop unless they figured out how to put flat logos on round buckets.

I buy my red 5 gallon pails from Fire House Subs. They are pickle buckets so they must be washed thoroughly, but you only pay $2 dollars per bucket and they donate the money to a Firefighter’s charity.

Love this tool blog!!! Love! However, perhaps comments should be turned off for this one. It’s a bucket. 5 gallon variety. Seriously?!!? Restaurants throw them away all the time. Again, it’s a 5 gallon bucket. I don’t get it, perhaps my IQ is not high enough

      No way!

I was counting on seeing some funny comments.

I figure it’s a seasonal gift item, similar to Craftsman clocks, barbecue tools, coasters, and other such things that they’ve come out with in previous years.

It’s a little silly, but hey – at least it’s made in the USA.

On a more somber note – the buckets do have a safety issue – when filled with some liquid and left in the presence of unsupervised toddlers. Toddler bucket drowning is not a common occurrence but we should strive to make it never happen.

I saw this online a few weeks ago. Says my local store has it in stock, but I’ve looked all over and didn’t see them on the floor anywhere.

If the pic is accurate, that red is way off – not even close to the Craftsman shade of bright red. I’d rather have a black bucket, would be cool if they offered red and black like they do with tool boxes and other Craftsman stuff.

Also sucks there’s no lid, even seperately.

I guess they negotiated a deal to buy a few million of these for a dollar or two and sell them for a tiny bit of profit, plus the free advertising. I guess when you’re struggling, every penny you can get helps that bottom line.

I don’t currently need another bucket, but I might get one with SYW points if they actually have them at my store. The great thing about buckets is they don’t take up any significant extra space to store one more when you can nest it with one or more other buckets. 😉

I buy the buckets in different colors and use them as various tool boxes.

    For instance:

    Orange (Home Depot) – Electrical
    Purple (Lowes) – Plumbing
    White (Ace? ) – Tile
Old 5 gallon paint bucket – Painting

I actually went in to Sears to buy a few of these a couple weeks back. The guy at the tool check out counter had no clue what I was talking about. I had him look up if they could order them and once he saw the picture, he recalled that our local K-mart (where he was previously employed) had a batch of these last year in red and also in black. Anyway, he said he couldn’t order them nor were there any in stock. I didn’t realize they didn’t have lids though… I use these buckets all the time to transport oil and chemical. I’ve always bought them at HD or Menard’s but they have lids that seal really well that come with them. I figured some Craftsman ones would be cool but a bucket without a lid is useless.
