This Dewalt 118 piece mechanics tool set (DWMT72163) is on sale for $90, which is 40% off its $150 list price. It looks like all of Dewalt’s mechanics tools, accessories, and sets are currently on sale at Sears, with the sets being most heavily discounted.
With coupon code TOOLS15, the price drops down to $75, which is 50% off the set’s list price. It’s never a good sign when an exclusive distributor has to discount new tools by up to 40-50% in order to move them. But hey, a deal’s a deal and we’re certainly not complaining.

Earlier in the Spring, Dewalt announced these Sears-exclusive mechanics tools, which includes wrench sets, ratchets, and socket sets. These products are said to be made in Taiwan.

Stanley/Black&Decker/DeWalt typically knows what they’re doing from a marketing standpoint. You have to wonder if they are starting to regret this exclusive arrangement.

It’s hard to say, but if Sears is having trouble moving these products, it’s not their fault. That is also assuming that sales have in fact been slow, but a 40% discount in mid-July does not seem like the type of discount that would be placed on mechanics tools that have been selling well.
I’m curious as to whether Sears is selling these at or even below cost.
Seth
They are still making a profit, even with the sale and coupon code combined.

My theory is that this is part of a leverage scheme by Sears to show the continued viability of the Craftsman brand. Maybe there were negotiations to have DeWalt start making hand tools for Sears, but DeWalt wanted too much money to produce them under the Craftsman name, or they wanted to give Sears’ customers a chance to buy “DeWalt” branded tools. If they fail, maybe this will give Sears the leverage to push DeWalt to manufacture them under the Craftsman name. I would not be averse to that, since the tools would be made in Taiwan versus mainland China, and they would be of arguably better quality.

To me, it’s a poorly thought-out set. 3 each of SAE and metric combination wrenches? There’s also too much overlap in the sockets for a set this size. When you have such a limited number of pieces, I don’t want any double sockets for 1/4 and 3/8. Quality wise, I tried the ratchets out in store, and while they seem to be made very well, I wasn’t impressed with the ergonomics. The handles are about twice as heavy and thick as the average ratchet.

I purchased the 204 piece set and I really like it. I own several Craftsman tool sets and this set is very heavy and seems to be well made. The slim case works great since the set is so heavy (case is more functional than similar sized Craftsman sets with case/tool box). Just my opinion.

I have gone back and forth on this one and for now am going to opt out. If some of your conjectures regarding these not selling well are true, then they just might be even more discounted later 😛
Regardless, I am good on wrenches and ratchets for now with a craftsman set I have
