Deal: Dewalt 20V Max 5Ah Starter Kit w/ Free Bonus Tool

Dewalt 20V Max 5Ah Battery Pack

Yesterday we talked about a rumored Dewalt 20V Max to 18V battery adapter. Such an adapter would be a big incentive for 18V users to step up to Dewalt’s 20V Max cordless power tool platform.

We came across a new deal that offers another incentive to hop aboard the Dewalt 20V Max train, and it could potentially foreshadow the release of the rumored battery adapter.

Over at Home Depot, there’s a new Dewalt 20V Max starter kit, model DCB205CK, that comes with a 5.0Ah battery pack, a 20V Max and 12V Max multi-voltage charger, and a carrying bag. It’s priced at $199.

Over at Amazon (directly), you can buy a Dewalt 5Ah battery pack for $139, and a charger for $69. So that’s $208, and you don’t get any carrying case. Other authorized Dewalt dealers charge the same prices.

So that $199 bundle pack is an okay deal by itself, as you save around $9 compared to buying a separate 20V Max 5Ah battery and charger. Not to mention the carrying case that’s included in the starter set.

BUT, that’s not the deal. Right now, and for an unknown time frame, buy that Dewalt 20V Max battery and charger starter kit, and you can get a select bare tool, for free.

Free Bonus Tool Options

  • Circular Saw DCS391B
  • Reciprocating Saw DCS380B
  • Impact Driver DCF885B
  • Angle Grinder DCG412B

These aren’t their “entry combo kit” tools either – you get their premium saw offerings. That DCS391 circular saw was the editor’s choice in our Best Cordless Circular Saw guide.

I have used all of these tools except for that angle grinder, and consider them to be strong picks.

Over at Amazon, each of the bare tools is priced at $119 each. So… buy a $199 battery and charger starter kit, get a $119 tool for free.

Compared to buying the individual components separately, you save $119. This doesn’t take into account the added ~$9 you’d save compared to if you bought the battery and charger separately instead of as part of the starter kit.

I then checked the price of tool kits for each of the bonus tool options. The two saws are available as 5Ah tool kits (with a P1 suffix, e.g. DCS391P1), the impact driver kit is only presently available with (2) compact batteries, and the angle grinder kit comes with (2) 5Ah battery packs.

Each of the two saw kits are priced at $259, and for that you get the tool, a 5Ah battery, a charger, and a hard shell carrying case. It should be safe to assume that the impact driver and angle grinder are similarly valued, even though there’s no similar single 5Ah kit option for those tools.

So… you save about $60 if you buy one of the 5Ah starter set and free bonus bare tool bundles, compared to if you buy the tools as part of a standalone kit. The only difference is that you get a soft carrying case instead of a hard plastic case. But if you really want a hard plastic case, I’m sure you can find something similar for less than the $60 cash savings you’d have in your pocket.

To take advantage of this deal, you have to buy one of the special bundles, as that’s how Home Depot runs these promos.

Price: $199 with free shipping

The promo bundles are “online only” specials, and there’s no mention of an expiration date that I could find.

They have had this promo display up since September 3rd here in Jacksonville, FL at all the Home Depots I visited. Here in the south it appears that this is an in store deal as well as an online one. There was a date range for the deal printed on the cardboard display but I can’t remember the exact date at this time, but I believe it was well into October.

You can also just get the string trimmer (DCST920P1) or blower (DCBL720P1). They come with a 5.0 AH battery and charger and cost $199. The string trimmer is pretty good but the blower is amazing.

I have the Circular saw and Compact Recip Saw (not the one as an option) and think both are very good as well.

Lowes has the blower with 5ah for $179. so with the battery being $139 you pay $40 for battery and charger. I do agree that its a great blower I just with it came with an adaptor to taper the nozzle down a bit.

Stuart–I notice that you can buy a 5Ah battery from Amazon for $139 and the charger for an additional $60. I have two chargers already that are 3-4 years old. If memory serves, those chargers will work for any battery in these series, whether 12v or 20v, correct? I probably have enough cordless tools for my needs (although the jury’s still out on that); if this 5Ah battery can be charged on my old chargers, that would be all I needed for now.

Actually, the battery is $119.00 and the charger is $69.00 (at least today 9-16-2015), and the battery gets Prime Shipping. The charger probably does, too, but I only noted the battery when I checked.

Check again. Amazon, directly, and all other authorized dealers I checked are selling them for $139.

      The Amazon-direct prices I saw were $139 and $69.

If you already have a Dewalt charger, you don’t need new one, unless you want one.

That’s why this is a starter set – it’s meant for those who have not already bought into Dewalt’s 20V Max lineup.

Even so, the bare tools are $119 and a 5.0Ah battery is $139.

So even if you want one of these bare tools and a 5.0Ah battery, but don’t need that extra charger, you’re still saving money with that $199 special bundle.

Separately, one of these bare tools and 5Ah battery cost $258 together. The bundle saves you $59.

Keep the charger as a spare, sell it, or throw it away if you don’t want it.

        Stuart,
Can you or anyone tell me why, just two months ago, you could by a set of two of these 5.0Ah batteries for $149 on Amazon and other sites? The set of two is now $199, an overnight increase of 33%, and I have not seen a similar price jump with other Dewalt batteries or other brands for that matter during this same period.

This happens from time to time.

If I had to guess, one possible explanation is that they’re looking to build up demand ahead of the holiday season. $199 for 2 batteries seems to be the regular recommended price.

The price might be lower in some seasons and then higher in others. Maybe demand is high now, and supply low, so restoring – and not necessarily raising – the price might be a good idea for Dewalt.

Maybe the price is higher because they want to make tool kits more attractive.

Maybe manufacturing costs, or price of battery cells went up.

It could be any number of things.

I’d like to say I believe the price on the 2-pack (Amazon link) might go back down, but there’s no guarantee.
