Today only, this Dewalt 20V Max brushless cordless power tool combo kit, DCK281D2, is on sale for $179.
The kit comes with the DCD790 compact drill, and DCF886 impact driver. It’s typically priced at around $279, so you’re saving roughly $100 with this deal.

What you should keep in mind, though, is that both of these tools are previous-generation models. There’s a newer and somewhat improved compact brushless drill, DCD791, and a new brushless impact driver with 3 speed and torque settings, DCF887.
That’s not to say that the tools in this kit aren’t good, because they’re in fact really good.
The DCF886 was my editor’s choice impact driver, and the DCD790 drill was my 2015 best compact 18V cordless drill pick.
The kit comes with (2) 2.0Ah battery packs, a charger, and a carrying bag.

Right now, this combo kit is lower in price than you get the drill kit or impact driver kit for (~$200 each), making it a great buy. If you want the latest and greatest combo, it’s currently $270 on Amazon.

I’m typically a Dewalt Tools guy. However after I saw the Lowes Kobalt brushless set for $149 on Black Friday AND my military discount a week or so ago I picked them up.
Being that the replacement 2.0ah batteries are only $20 each and $50 for the 4.0ah. So far I’m impressed with their operation. I cannot really give an adequate review so far but time will tell. Also I understand after 1 year I can return it for a full refund so I have nothing to lose.

Those Kobalt battery prices are a killer

I’ve got the Kobalt stuff, too. I’m thrilled – I note a huge jump in power from my old M12 Fuel stuff. I’m just a homeowner, but I had a few tasks for which the M12 Fuel stuff just couldn’t hack it.
Just wait for a sale and those prices drop like crazy. The circular saw was just $80 and that thing is a beast.
Someone on Slickdeals noted that Home Depot is selling a similar Dewalt brushless kit that includes this plus two 5.0ah batteries for $240. It’s sold out online, but worth keeping an eye out for if the deal goes live again.

I’d like to expand on Kobalt tools if these drill and driver meet my expectations.
I bought a 10″ Dewalt Corded Circ Saw, after all discounts for $80, last Christmas time. It replaces an old Black and Decker from the 80’s that has been a very good saw.
I’ll be hard pressed to replace the Dewalt saw unless portability becomes a necessity.

Yep, I got that Kobalt circular saw on sale for $80. It is way, way better than my kit-supplied Makita cordless circular saw. Also a greater depth of cut and a brake. I’ve only used it once, but it was quite good. The batteries are priced right.
I’ll be inclined to try some of the other things later on based on my experience with the saw.

This DeWalt combo is a great buy at that price. I have a DCD790 and it is a great little drill. Finally supplemented it with a brushed DCD985. Want the 996 but for $54 I couldn’t pass the 985 up.

I’ve had this exact kit since around labor day of 2015. At the time I think it was $229 down from $279. Couldn’t be happier with them.

Will I regret pulling the trigger on this deal when I already had my eye on the 887?

Depends, what about the DCF887 appealed to you? If it’s the speed and torque settings, then yes the DCF886 might disappoint you. If you want a strong impact driver at a good price, this kit has the edge.

This is a great kit that I’ve owned for almost 2 years. The 2.0ah batteries have plenty of life for a DIYer (it’s amazing how infrequently I have to charge them). The impact driver is a beast and the drill is one of the best that I’ve owned minus the weight (it’s a little on the heavy side). This is a great kit, and I would guess better than the Kobalt junk.
Aaron
Are you speaking from experience when you call the Kobalt “junk”? Because spec-wise they’re superior and the impact is a 3-speed with a finish mode. If anything the 24v combo kit for $149 is a much better buy for what you get.

I own this kit, but with the compact hammer drill (dcd 796). It´s pretty good. I pay more than $300 two years ago. i love it.
