Dewalt 20V Band Saw DCS371

We posted about the new Dewalt DCS371 20V band saw a few months ago, and it looks like the saw is about ready to hit the market. The technical specifications remain unchanged, but there are a few added details worth looking at.

The new DCS371 cordless band saw is designed for professionals in the electrical, mechanical, and HVAC industries, and others who often cut conduit, pipe, Unistrut, threaded rod, and other metallic materials up to 2-1/2″ in diameter.

Dewalt press materials say that the DCS371 band saw was designed with the motor and battery connection on opposite ends of the tool for better balance. This allows the tool to do the work and aids the user in making straight cuts.

Features

  • 2-1/2″ Cut Capacity
  • Centered handle that allows for users to operate tool in any orientation, including overhead
  • Ergonomic and balanced design
  • Weighs 9.4lbs (with battery)
  • 15″ long
  • 14/18 tpi blade
  • 32-7/8″ blade length
  • 570 fpm cutting speed
  • Tool-free blade changing lever
  • Dual bearing blade guide rollers
  • Built-in hook allows the saw to be hung from ladders, carts, and other types of equipment
  • Built-in LED work light with 20 second delay

Kit Options and Pricing

DCS371B – bare tool – $239
DCS371M1 – (1) battery kit – $359

The kit comes with the saw, a 4.0Ah Li-ion battery pack, and charger.

ETA: Jan 2014 (which means the saw should be popping up at Dewalt dealers any day now)

Buy Now(Kit via Home Depot)

Home Depot is offering special pricing on the DCS371M1 kit. You can buy the 1-battery kit for $329, and it also comes with a free bonus battery pack. At the time of this posting, Home Depot lists the kit as “online online” and also “out of stock online,” which typically means they don’t yet have the product in stock and that you should check back soon.

First Impression

It has been more than two years since Dewalt first launched their 20V Max line of cordless power tools. Although a lot of Dewalt users – especially early adopters – have been disappointed at the rate at which new tools have been released, the stretched-out release schedule means that Dewalt has had plenty of time to engineer a generation of fresh new tools.

Compared to Bosch’s 18V BSH180 cordless band saw, Dewalt’s DCS371 is 1.7 lbs (22%) heavier.

At 10.25 lbs, Milwaukee’s M18 2629 cordless band saw is slightly heavier, but it also has greater cutting capacity (3-1/4″ vs. 2-1/2″).

At first take, there is nothing unappealing about the new Dewalt band saw, but there is also nothing to raise it above competing models.

Dewalt Cordless Band Saw Comparison
Top: Dewalt 20V Band saw (DCS371), Bottom: Dewalt 18V Band Saw (DCS370)

It looks like the DCS371 was very closely modeled from Dewalt’s 18V band saw, model DCS370. There are a few differences, such as with the battery connection, primary handle grip, auxiliary handle, and the addition of an LED work light, but other than that the tools are quite similar in form and function.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the DCS370 has been positively reviewed by users, but why did it take so long for Dewalt to add a band saw to their 20V line up?

    Why not brushless?

Price consideration? There could also be a tech limitation. All of Dewalt’s brushless tools are drills or drivers, except for the new framing nailer.

Not brushless… this is bad. I’m switching over from 18v to 20v buy only buying 20v as the are released with brushless. It looks like some of these tools might be oldschool for a very long time. I’m not too deep into dewalt… maybe its time to look at the other vendors.

Good point. Still the multi-tool also has a small-class motor.

There might be other tools that they don’t make themselves. Maybe routers? I don’t recall.

Just placed my order at Home Depot, use the code FEBHD for $10 off your order, this gets you the saw, (2) 4.0ah XR batteries, charger, bag etc for $319+tax ($340 out the door) Dunno if it’ll be the best price I could have eventually gotten but it’s the best deal I could find at this time!

Was this a pre-order deal? I went to purchase it from the link provided tonight and was not allowed to checkout due to “no longer available online” status.

I noticed that also, luckily I got my order placed. I shared it on ElectricianTalk and 2 other guys got orders in. Hopefully you can still have a chance at the extra battery, this is the ONLY place I’ve seen the 2 battery deal 🙁

It could just be that the sold out temporarily. New tools sometimes launch with limited quantities to ensure all distributors get a couple to sell.

I am very pleased with my dewalt 20 volt band saw! I used it today to cut a bunch of 16 gauge metal.

I’ve had a 20v DCS371 saw for about 2 years. When you pull the trigger the light comes on but the motor doesn’t run. I know 2 other people with the same tool that have had the same problem. It about $100.00 or so to fix it through a small tool repair shop. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this short of spending the $100.00? Please advise. Thanks

Late reply here, but hopefully this will help anyone who is searching online.

      Here’s what’s causing that problem:

The gearbox is shot. Some gear teeth have broken loose and seized up the drivetrain.

How do you fix it? Return to dewalt if it still has a warranty. Or order a new motor & gearbox (its sold as one piece) and replace it yourself. Real easy installation, only a few screws hold it together.

It will cost about $110 to $120 for the part.

Once its fixed, sell it and buy the ryobi compact band saw. Same quality or better, at half the price.
