A reader sent in a tip (thank you Brian!) that Home Depot has the newest Dewalt DCF850 20V Max Atomic Series cordless impact driver on sale for $99.
If you’re a Dewalt 20V Max user looking for a compact no-compromise brushless impact driver, this looks to be the one to buy right now.

I’ve been testing it with extremely positive experiences so far. It has a slightly different balance to it, but I appreciate the shorter head length.
The Atomic series impact features 3 speed/torque modes and delivers up to 1825 in-lbs of max torque.
It’s a fast, compact, and fantastic performer.
You can only buy this online for store pickup (free) or local delivery (for a fee). You can try your luck finding it in stores, but ordering online for store pickup might be a safer bet.
Home Depot is prominently adverting the new Atomic series impact driver in-store, but none of the stores near me had it on display anywhere, which is why I recommend ordering it online with in-store pickup as they might be holding these separately. Most of the stores near me report having between 1 and 6 in stock. My closest store is reporting zero inventory, which could mean they already sold out.

Acme Tools and Tool Nut also have the bare tool for $99. Acme Tools is accepting preorders with a “usually ships in 3-5 weeks” ETA, and Tool Nut has a January 2022 ETA, hence the “buy it NOW” urgency in the title.
If you don’t buy it now, there’s a good chance you’re going to have to wait quite a bit.
Part of me wonders if there will be other or better deals on this impact later in the season, but that it’s brand new and in short supply makes me doubtful. Stores also have high inventory on Dewalt’s single-speed Atomic and brushless impact drivers.
Should you buy now or wait? If you change your mind and have buyer’s remorse, or a better deal comes along, Home Depot has a good return policy. If the deal sells out, you might have to wait a couple of months until you can get your hands on one.

Nice, but I was referring to the impact wrenches, not the impact driver. They are the models with the 3/8″ or 1/2″ anvil on them. At HD you can buy the impact wrenches for $199 and get a 5Ah battery. Available online as a bundle, too:

I bought my 3/8 impact wrench a few days ago. Earlier this morning I swung by HD with my receipt and they were happy to hook me up with the free battery. I think the tool alone was worth the $200 asking price but a nice battery thrown in is just a killer deal.
They had some great deals on Diablo saw blades and also Milwaukee oscillating blade 5-packs for $19.99.

2 out of the 3 posts published today were in response to reader questions or tips. I’ve got a lot of other requests that I’ve been working on. I don’t have any emails from you.
Some of Dewalt’s new tools were shown off at recent specialty trade show but were not officially announced yet. I’ve talked to some attendees for permission to use their images, but there’s almost nothing that could be said about the tools.
Other tools were previewed at a different trade show, but those are cordless outdoor power tools that won’t be available until Spring 2022 at the earliest. Some tools that were announced for Spring 2021 still haven’t been shipping yet.
AND, there are some tools that were announced, but not with sufficient details for a post. Maybe it’s enough for a social media post, but I often need more. If I cannot glean enough details for my questions to be answered, I am unable to write a post that will answer yours.
They’re still in my queue – the FlexVolt 7″ grinder, electric cable tray cutter, and Spring 2022 outdoor tools. Or were you referring to rumored tools?
I’m extremely busy right now, analyzing the very many holiday tool deals that just flooded stores, testing and reviewing a whole lot of new tools that just hit the market, and also scheduling non-deal-related posts so there’s something else to hold readers’ interest over the holiday season.
If there’s something you’d like me to cover or look into, please help me out and be less cryptic. If I didn’t post about something yet, it’s either because I missed the news (yes, this can happen), or de-prioritized it due to lower time-sensitivity or perceived interest or impact.

It was a comment mainly about just how much dewalt is doing right now.
I was referring to the new OPE. Its interesting for many reasons. Does mower have motor upgrades and what’s the benefit of rear drive. A chainsaw kit with a 15 amph is largest capacity on a cordless system .

I’m still waiting on official word, but the mower appears unchanged with the exception of the drive system. Rear wheel drive makes it a bit easier to push with better traction and easier to stay in a straight line, as front wheel drive kinda wants to pull the front end every which way. Rear wheel drive also tends to be more expensive. The new rear wheel model will come kitted with the same 2x10Ah batteries, but will cost $100 more than the front wheel model.
And yes, the new 20″ chainsaw is a 3.1kW beast. Everyone that used it said it really does feel like a 50cc gas chainsaw. At 60v the battery is “only” 5Ah, so it is a 270Wh nominal pack. That is the same as capacity as their now discontinued 40v chainsaw when paired with the 7.5Ah battery. Which is large, but not the largest available on a cordless system. Greenworks has a 5Ah battery on their 80v Pro line chainsaw.

It was never available online, only online ordering for store pickup. This usually means that all available inventory went straight to individual stores.

My stores aren’t displaying the bare tool, but it’s available for store pickup and with different inventory count for all of my local stores. This suggests (to me at least) you can order online for store pickup or head to a store which is reporting inventory and ask an associate to find their location for you. I find that ordering for store pickup is easier.

Just picked one up this evening as well and no manual or belt clip in mine either, no big deal as I have plenty of other belt clips I never use and the manual would not have been read anyway.
The impact itself however is very nice and box the bare tool comes in is amusingly small, can’t wait to put it to work tomorrow and see how it compares to the worn out DCF809 it is replacing.

Managed to snag one yesterday. It is certainly tiny! Feels like it runs smoother than the previous XR 3 speed model.

I drove out of my way to the the HD in Montville to pick up the DCF850. They were in with the display of other Atomic hardware, but not prominently labeled, so I spent 20 minutes looking at every box on display until I found the few that were in stock.

I plan on trying it out in the morning when I return to Habitat. We’re refurbishing/making new sawhorses for a couple of new houses we’re about to start so I should be able to give it a good workout.

I purchased 4 of these impacts just this week in an hd store located in Edison Nj. I’ve been looking for it, up on the shelves, for wks. On the 25th they had a bunch. They were not on the floor but up on the upper shelves (still are). I used a tape measure to drop them down so I didn’t have to ask one of those bozo associates to fetch it for me. The website says there are about 1-7 in the local hd around the Edison area. If you’re looking for it, I would check up on those top shelves. I got a bunch of the flexvolt stuff way before anyone else, back when that came out.

I had a similar issue. I tried to buy the 3/8 impact driver for weeks but the employees could never find them and blamed the problem on the website incorrectly stating they had stock. On my most recent attempt I finally managed to get an employee who actually cared, and she found that they were not with the normal Dewalt backstock above the tool isle, rather they were in a totally different part of the store specifically with the other “holiday special merchandise”–in my case, down the plumbing/HVAC isle.
So if anyone is looking for these and the staff can’t find them, perhaps suggest they might look where the Xmas or Black Friday stuff is kept, apparently that’s separate from their normal inventory.

Lugs? No.
Casual work? I would think so. Impact wrenches are ideal with sockets, as adapters can add extra length that negate the size benefits of this tool. While not ideal, impact drivers are regularly used for light automotive work.

Anyone else who currently still has an 895 or familiar with it, would you make the switch/”upgrade”? Aside from the compact size what else am I missing?

I am still using my 895 and I feel no need to upgrade. In fact I think I prefer the 895: Yes, it is true that the new model is faster and has higher torque, but I’ve never found that the 895 was underpowered. If the 850 drives a screw quicker it really doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of how fast I get the overall job done. Perhaps if I was hanging siding or building decks and I was driving thousands of screws over and over again with little other work then I’d go for the faster tool, but for what I do it doesn’t really matter if it takes 5 or 6 seconds to drive a screw, it’s a tiny tiny portion of my overall workday. And if I’m driving very large fasteners where torque is a concern then forget looking for a “more powerful impact driver”, I’m going to go straight to a proper square drive impact wrench.
Why do I prefer the 895? It’s plenty powerful enough to get the job done. I really like the “trigger button” which releases the bit on the 895 compared to the collar that seems to be common these days. If my 895 died today I’d buy the 850 as its replacement but as long as the 895 is still working I’m going to keep using it. No sense in fixing what isn’t broken in my opinion, and the 850 isn’t going to have any impact on my bottom line, except what I’d have to shell out to buy it.

That’s really helpful information. Like you, I think I’ll wait until (if) the 895 dies before replacing with the 850. It’s still going strong after 8 years and I, too, prefer the trigger finger release!
(Interesting that the 850 model number is less than the 895…they usually increase in number over time and as premium versions are created. But perhaps the fact it’s “atomic” may keep the model number lower? 🤷♂️

Stuart, I was thinking of moving platforms to M12 Fuel this Christmas season because of size/weight…until I saw these subcompact Dewalts.
Do you know if Milwaukee will go super small on M12 or match Dewalt’s size on the M18 in the near future? This is for personal use building out my pole barn and then automotive/powersports.

Just got this impact today, I was screwing off some plywood to a little cover I made for my goats feeding pen, I was amazed with it until I slipped off a screw and the bit I had in it hit the plywood. Now the tool is defective and the round part where you insert the bit is no longer straight, It has a slight wobble to it and even with no bit inserted the tool is making the impact noise when pulling the trigger. Amazed it broke after such a lite problem. Will be taking back to HD to get a replacement hopefully.

Thanks for the update! I’m surprised as well with the ease of breaking. Hopefully the replacement/exchange is a seamless one. I’ve had little to no issues with stuff like that in the past with the depot.

I can’t say I’ve ever used it as a hammer but my 895 has been used hard for years and it’s still hanging in there. I love it, especially the trigger for ejecting bits.

I mean I haven’t sheeted a roof using it as a hammer for the nails, but it’s so old I’ll use the battery end to smack a snug 2×4 in place once in a while or stuff like that.
