New Dewalt Air Tools 2014

We received a tip from Chris, about some new Dewalt air tools. Before I opened the email, I jumped to the conclusion that Dewalt was announcing some new nailers to join their cordless brushless framing nailer. But, that’s not the case.

Dewalt has come out with 5 new air tools that looked to be designed for automotive techs and possibly even industrial users.

Dewalt has already shown interest in entering the automotive tools arena, and came out with wrenches and ratcheting wrenches, and ratchets and socket sets last year. They are also supporting Mac Tools’ new line of cordless automotive tools with Dewalt co-branded battery packs and similar tool styles. Even so, I am surprised that they have come out with a new line of air tools directly aimed at mechanics, techs, and other such users.

As part of the initial launch, there will be 5 new air tools – a 1/2″ impact wrench, a 3/8″ ratchet, a 3/8″ reversible drill, a palm sander, and an angled die grinder.

It looks like Lowes is Dewalt’s launch partner for these air tools, and some locations near me are already showing in-stock inventory.

Here’s a short promo video that shows the tools’ highlights:

Dewalt DWMT70773L 1/2″ Impact Wrench

Dewalt’s new DWMT70773L impact wrench has a non-marring shock resistant housing, one-handed directional trigger switch, bottom exhaust, and a rather comfortable-looking ergonomic handle.

Dewalt vs Mac Tools Air Impact Wrench

To me, it looks like Dewalt’s new impact wrench is based heavily off of the Mac Tools AWP050 form factor, but without the titanium housing and $450 price point.

Is the sander extremely efficient or is the air consumption a typo? 2.2 cfm for a random orbital sander seems really low. We have a couple Mirka sanders and a couple Porter cable sanders that are similar and they use somewhere around 15 cfm.

2.2 CFM doesn’t seem right to me either, but that’s what it says on Dewalt’s website.

Most automotive 5″ sanders have air consumption requirements in the 12-16 CFM range. 2.2 CFM is probably just a typo. I’ll see if I can get someone to check and correct Dewalt’s official specs.

Okay, so I heard back from Dewalt. It seems that their CFM values are well, CFM values, and not SCFM values. To convert to CFM (SCFM) levels you might be used to, calculate the SCFM using the CFM values Dewalt published and both the pressure and temperature at which you’ll use the tools. Or multiply the values Dewalt published by ~7.

I always look for CFM as rated at 90 PSI, but for some reason Dewalt only offers these specs for their nailers but not their automotive air tools.

What is the sound rating on the impact wrench? (All companies should give this spec!) It looks like it has grip exhaust which usually helps in this regard.

It all looks nice but I already have an IR 2132G and an old IR air socket, the other tools I can’t imagine buying outside of a production environment.

I’ll ask as soon as I hear back about the accuracy of the other specs pulled from Dewalt’s website. I agree – manufacturers should disclose noise and vibration ratings for all power tools.

I don’t know how I feel about this. On one hand, I’m a DeWalt Devotee for life, and I am very, VERY happy to see the DeWalt 20 Volt Max system elements in these new Air tools. The Ergonomic Grips, the keyless Chuck, all those little conveniences and rugged-good-looks from DeWalt are here in these 5. On the other hand… They’re Air Tools… I have no need or desire for them.

And what’s worse, I have seen in the past how Stanley Black & Decker has released re-coloured-to-DeWalt tools to gauge the interest in a DeWalt version, neglecting DeWalt Quality Control in the process. I have every hope in the world that this is a step in a positive direction for DeWalt to take, but I also remember they’ve tried to get away with the DeWalt Tape Measures and Screwdrivers that were low-quality Stanley/FatMax Rebrands.

I hope very much that these are DeWalt quality, and that DeWalt hasn’t been screwed over by Stanley Black & Decker again. The less they have to recover from, the more likely that we’ll get more in the 20 Volt Max/XR Line of tools sooner rather than later.

Dewalt does engage in unpredictable rebranding, such as how the TwinTec wrench was Stanley-branded at some distributors and Dewalt at others.

But these tools look to be designed – or adapted – as Dewalt tools. As mentioned, it looks to me like the impact wrench is almost a branch off Mac Tools’ design tree. Remember, Stanley Black & Decker has a lot of brands in their umbrella, including Mac Tools and Proto, which make pro- and industrial-quality tools.

Perhaps Dewalt’s cordless team was mainly responsible for Mac Tools’ new cordless tools, while Mac Tools’ air tools team was mainly responsible for these new Dewalt air tools. There’s no reason why Dewalt engineers would have started working on air tools from the ground up when Mac Tools engineers have more experience in this area.

I am exactly on page with joe…no need for these…get me a 20v brad nailer to go with my framing gun and get this 20v line moving…Dewalt has the same ADD i have, thats probably why i like them so much….and i will probably buy some of these just in case…

You might be underestimating how many projects Dewalt and other brands are capable of undertaking simultaneously.

They released 5 new air tools aimed at automotive users, but that doesn’t mean they’re not working on new 20V Max cordless tech at the same time. I don’t know if they’re coming out with a cordless brad nailer, but I can tell you that they didn’t work on these air tools instead of cordless tools.

I have no problem with a little switch up here, as long as all sibling companies involved are going for their BEST work, not “It doesn’t matter, it’s just a knock-off” work like we saw on the DeWalt Tape Measures and Screwdrivers. When Mac Tools got the DeWalt treatment, they made use of some of DeWalt’s best work. But, when Stanley/Fatmax, and whoever else worked on the DeWalt Hand Tools, released DeWalt re-branded stuff, the quality went down. Both in terms of DeWalt AND in terms of Stanley. Framing Hammers that couldn’t handle prying lumber apart, Workstations that just snapped, Tape Measures that would just fall apart or snap off.

I’m more afraid of this later thing happening to these Air Tools. That, although Mac Tools might have made them for DeWalt, Mac Tools didn’t put their best work into it, and it results in DeWalt-Branded tools just falling apart or failing miserably. I don’t actually want these tools for myself, because I use Cordless tools for what I do, but I don’t want losses on behalf of DeWalt fixing these broken Former-Mac Tools to hurt DeWalt as a company. I want them to be able to release their Cordless line with confidence, not having had to deal with another blemish on their work like they did with so many of their Hand Tools failing.

I love DeWalt tools, and you can’t make me go to another brand. That said, I really want them to do well, and I don’t want them screwed over by sibling or parent companies not putting out their best tools on their behalf.

To my information the MAC Tools engineering team is entirely responsible for both their cordless and air tools. The only common components seem to be the battery and trigger assembly. The battery tools are biased to automotive specs and applications which are not in Dewalt’s wheelhouse.

The Mac Tools cordless power tools are definitely tailored towards automotive applications. Maybe it was a joint project, or the Mac team simply spring-boarded from Dewalt designs to simplify production.

Dewalt needs to stop playing around with stuff like this and focus on bringing out some cordless competition against milwaukee.

Whatever happened to Porter+Cable’s line of air tools? Those along with PC generators seem to have been quietly discontinued last year.

I just returned the dewalt 1/2inch impact wrench. It was completely useless. I am a licensed mechanic and have many good working air tools. I also bought the 3/8 air wrachet. The air wrachet locked up internally after light uses. It was oiled and air pressure st 90psi. The half inch impact gun cant remove a wheel nut torqued to 100 ftlbs…..

Maybe you should have someone test the product and see what they say?
