Price Drop: Dewalt 36″ Ball Bearing Tool Chest and Cabinet Deals

Dewalt Ball Bearing Tool Storage Combo

A couple of months ago we previewed Dewalt’s new 36″ ball bearing tool storage products. There’s a 6-drawer chest and a 5-drawer rolling cabinet. At the time, the chest was $250, and the cabinet was $350.

Now, the top and bottom units both dropped in price by $50 each, and there’s a new “special buy” combo for $500.

Now (12/5/14), the top and bottom units are cheaper than ever – $125 for the top chest and $225 for the bottom cabinet, with a combo price of $350.

Update: Thanks to Derek for the heads-up about the price drop! These new prices make the Dewalt ball bearing storage units much more appealing. It’s now almost hard to say no to the deal.

My local Home Depot had a demo unit on the sales floor over the summer, and so I of course gave a quick once-over. Overall, I wasn’t impressed, especially with the bottom drawer that only opens halfway. A reader pointed out this observation in a comment, and I experienced the same thing. The product photos show that the bottom drawer is supposed to have full-extension slides. Maybe the in-store demo units were altered so as to not allow full extension for safety reasons.

$500 $350 for an 11-drawer 36″ wide ball bearing combo with large wheels and a very large top compartment and gas strut-supported lid? Seems like a decent deal. Still, it’s one that I would pass up, despite liking the yellow color scheme, as I would prefer for more drawers rather than an enormous top compartment.

If this floats your boat, the combo is $100 now $250 less expensive than it used to be. Home Depot is calling this a “special buy,” but you can buy the separate components for the same price. There’s no indication that the chest and cabinet locks are keyed the same if you buy a combo.

The 52′ Husky is back in stock for $599, I picked one up a few weeks ago and love it. Has a good feel to it, Drawers have little flex and slide smooth when you get some weight in them.

One point of interest, The model and serial number tag says USA.

Well, it’s good to know that HD has brought the production of the tags on those Husky units back to the USA. :p

I bought one of these at the special price and my bottom drawer does not come out all the way it has something to do with the 200lb bottom drawer capacity. Also the keys are not matched and you don’t know what keys you will get til you open the box it would be nice if the could have marked the box so you knew when you bought it. Overall its a decent box it would be nicer to have more drawers but i am a big Dewalt fan and have to have my stuff match so that is why I bought it . Plus it looks good in the shop.

I was ready for the bottom box. But it only opens half way…a huge fail.

I just checked one at the store (sorry, forgot to take pics). Inside that half extension bottom drawer is a nutlike device that has a sticker that says something like “200lb limiter” and on the inside of each drawer slide is a plastic release that will allow it to go full extension. I believe you can unscrew that release on both sides and make it full extension…but then it’s no longer 200lbs. YMMV. Thx!

This combo has arrived in Canada at Home Depot. Saw it today. Want it badly. The 32″ is the perfect size for me. The 52″ set that is at Canadian Tire is just huge.

Canadian funds, though… It’s $299 for the Hatch-Top, and $399 for the bottom cabinet.

      Wow… sorry… typo… 36″, not 32″, is perfect for me… I must’ve been thinking of the 52″ from Canadian Tire…

The price drop has not happened in Canada. I keep checking. I wish it was true.

I kinda like the bottom drawer not opening all the way. Something about this makes me think there is a catch, or something, to prevent the drawer from opening enough to weigh the rest of the unit down and tip it forward while opening. I’ll have to have another look next chance I’m at my local Home Depot. I’m curious now.

This is now down to $350 for both. $125 for the upper and $225 for the roller.

Wow, that’s a huge price drop.

I might pick up one of those top chests. $125 is a tough price to say no to.

I know. I want to get the top box but have nowhere to put it.

Over on garagejournal they said the bottom box drawer should open up all the way unlike the way it’s assembled at the store.

i am a huge dewalt fan but when i saw these boxes i was really disappointed – they are very basic for this price point (even the lower price) and the bottom box is a huge fail as someone pointed out – they are really more advertising than storage. i know some are not fans of HF but their industrial line of tool chests is cheaper and i think much nicer.

I got one of these HF INDUSTRIAL tool chests and really like it. I got it at 50% sale and added the 25% coupon. Lots of the name brands (Craftsman, dewalt) of comparable price are much flimsier. I was in HD and saw the dewalt. A guy was looking at it and said it was flimsy. But folks can comparision shop and find out for themselves. Make sure not to look at the other line of tool chests (mine’s red, and I think the other line are black) because those are flimsy.

I saw the price drop at Home Depot yesterday, and I was really tempted. But when you look at it closer you see a lot of flaws. The demo unit in the store had cracks on some of the welds. The drawers didn’t feel that smooth when they were empty, I can only imagine if they had a 100lbs in them. Also like others have pointed out the bottom drawer doesn’t open all the way, and there is no way to match the keys aside from luck of the draw. Another fun annoyance I notice is that the top bin doesn’t have a handle, you don’t notice it when it’s open on display unless you try out the door. Judging from the fact that the price droped so significantly before Christmas, I feel it may go down again. I’m not sure at what point it becomes irresistible, but I’m sure my bitching will go out the window if the price is low enough.

Keep in mind with these puppies that the huge lid on the top chest seriously limits location. You can’t put this under a lot of cabinets, they’ll need a lot of clearance above.

If you use your Home Depot credit card you can save 5% more off the combo 332.50 total when you ask for the lowes discount/price match. Are local home depot does this on all orders.

Many of the Black Friday deals are cheaper. At my local HD, the bessey clamps were 5.00 cheaper. The Milwaukee hole saw kit was 6.00 cheaper.

The bottom drawer comes with a clip in place to keep it from extending all the way for safety reasons but its set up so the customer can reach in and disengage the clip once they get it home.

I guess that makes sense, but it would have been nice if this was mentioned anywhere. A lot of people complained about this, and there was no indication on the floor model at my store that the bottom drawer was full-extension as well. Maybe it’s mentioned in the user manual, but I haven’t found a copy of it online yet.

I picked up one of these the other day, as I needed extra space for my tools out in the shop, and the price was really good. Originally I was going to use it for my automotive tools, but the design is not optimized for that; it needs more shallow drawers to be truly useful for that purpose. So I took out a lot of my woodworking tools that were stored in my old craftsman box and made that one my dedicated automotive storage unit.

I’m not sure why there is no handle on the top lid, but a quick trip to the hardware store provided a nice satin black one that matches the look nicely. I’m still thinking about what to put into the big area on top, but there is no rush to fill it up.

So that’s the down side…but those drawers open great, and hold my biggest clamps, hammers and other bulky tools that were pretty crowded in the craftsman box. Mine is going to live in one place, but the unit rolls smoothly.

Plus it’s yellow, and it makes quite a statement in my shop. I’d recommend you see it in person before buying it to make sure it will meet your needs – I had to go to 2 Home Depots to find one on display.

We bought the Dewalt top box at home Depot and wanted the bottom and they were out of stock and this has been since Christmas and we can not get the bottom cabinet from home depot. They are going with husky and that’s fine but sell the top box and tell u that they are out of stock on the bottom but will be getting more in. Now what do we do?? We can’t find the botto any where. Any suggestions??? Please email me.

I purchased one of these on sale around Christmas, had it in the storage unit until I moved. Locked it up now I can’t find the keys. Anyone know how to get a replacement key? Key tab reads T01 and T04

Have you contacted Dewalt? I’m sure their spare parts department should be able to help you out.
