Mark wrote in with an early morning heads-up: This Dewalt 20V Max DCK281D2 brushless cordless drill and impact driver combo is on sale, today only, for $189.
It’s regularly priced at $279, but I don’t think that’s the fair market price right now. Its fair price seems to be $259, but not quite, as I’ll discuss in a moment.

This combo kit comes with the DCD790 compact drill/driver, DCF886 single-mode impact driver, (2) 2.0Ah battery packs, a charger, and a carrying bag.
I think that this is a great combo at a great price.

Perhaps it’s a good combo for your needs. Both tools perform well, and are as great as compact brushless drills and single-mode impacts can get. More demanding users might instead want to look towards a more powerful drill, or multi-mode impact that has different speed and torque settings.
Note: This same combo was on sale as a one-day deal back in April. It was slightly more expensive then, but the discussion still applies.
The new latest and greatest compact cordless drill and impact combo kit from Dewalt, DCK283D2, is priced at $259 on Amazon. So that’s a $60 bump up in price, although the kit normally retails for $279.

That kit comes with the newer DCD791 compact drill/driver, and DCF887 impact driver with multiple speed and torque settings.
If you were in the market for a new compact brushless combo kit, the DCK283D2 is a very compelling offering. But it’s also $60 more.
At regular pricing, the DCK283D2 combo is definitely better than the DCK281D2 kit that it sort of replaces.
But for $189, the DCK281D2 is a great bargain. You miss out on some of the new features of the updated models, such as the LED worklight feature – which allows the worklight to be used independent of drill or impact operation – and the newer impact’s 3 speed modes.
Also keep in mind that Dewalt’s $25 off $100+ holiday promo will likely go live in the next week or so. It *might* apply to the DCK283D2, but it’s impossible to know for sure.
If I were in the market for a Dewalt 20V Max compact brushless drill and impact kit, I’d want the DCK283D2, but would likely settle for the DCK281D2 at today’s sale price of $189.
Deal ends at 3am ET 11/11/2016, unless supplies sell out first.

If I really wanted the updated (and upgraded in my opinion) tools, I’d buy the DCK283D2 kit now, at $259, and would check the price in a week or two. If the $25 off $100 promo applies to it, the price would likely go back up to $279 first.
Or, that $25 promo might not apply, and the price might go back to the list price of $279 anyway.
If it stays at $259 and is eligible for the $25 discount, I’d ask Amazon for a price adjustment. If they say no, I’d buy a new kit and return the first purchase, eating the return shipment cost, but not before asking Amazon if they can adjust the return to waive it – which they can sometimes do.
Also Consider…
In the comments, Jonathan points out the DCF887M2 brushless impact driver kit, which comes with the new impact driver and (2) 4.0Ah Li-ion battery packs for $183-186. While not apples-to-apples, that’s certainly a better bargain compared to the 2x 2.0Ah version of the kit, which is $180 on Amazon. But, in my opinion, these compact tools are easier to wield with compact battery packs.

Don’t forget Home Depot’s low price guarantee, they’ll price match Amazon. Then if Amazon drops by $25 in the next 30 days HD will give you the difference.
Stuart
Right now, the DCK281D2 isn’t stocked at HD, and the DCK283D2 is the same price – $259.
Jonathan
I still think that the newest BL Impact DCF887 with two (4.0ah) batteries for $183 on Amazon is a better deal. Esp if You pair that with I think Lowes $99 DCD771 kit with two (2.0Ah) batteries you get get batteries two (4.0ah) and two (2.0ah) for $23 more granted its not a BL drill except for precision drilling, how often does your drill get pushed on a regular basis, and then wouldn’t a Hammer drill/driver offer more flex?
DEWALT DCF887M2 20V MAX XR Li-Ion 4.0 Ah Brushless 0.25″ 3-Speed Impact Driver Kit $183
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0183RLWHQ/ref=psdc_2399141011_t1_B0183RLW8A
and the D2 kit with just the 2.0ah batteries is $4 less unless you are weight adverse not sure why one would choose the D2 kit
Jonathan
Opps misread the price I thought that it was $259 not $189.
Stuart
While not apples-to-apples, that does look to be a good price for the DCF887 kit, especially since the 2.0Ah version is $180.
Jonathan
For $149 one could get the DEWALT 20V MAX 1.5 Ah Li-Ion BL Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit DCK281C2 on CPO outlet ebay site but no Prime free 2day or easy returns
Stuart
I briefly discussed that kit here:
https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/dewalt-brushless-drill-impact-driver-combo-kit-fathers-day-2016-deals/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
I’d bet we’ll see it again at Home Depot, probably for $149 too.
I’d spend more and go for the Amazon deal, with its 2.0Ah battery packs. Partly for the greater capacity, but also because the 1.5Ah batteries in the C2 kit lack fuel gauges.
Plus, I don’t like CPO.
Jonathan
Never dealt with CPO before never been a good enough deal to ever shop with them.
in the same vein of DeWalt 20V max kits, today’s Lowe’s week ad has the DCD785 20V Hammer drill (for those that need/want a hammer drill) + DCF885 Impact and the DCL040 LED Work Light with the same 1.5ah -sans fuel gauge batteries for $199 #797360
Plus a deal on waterloo ball bearing entry level 26″ tool chest (8 drawers cabinet and chest for $99) USA made components
Travis
Great kit at a great price! I’ve had it for some time and it has been great. The drill is by far my favorite drill of maybe 9 others I own.
Chris
Nooooooooooo. I haven’t checked TG in a few days. i was looking at this kit. And of course the sale happened on a day I didn’t check TG. Shame on me.
