Today only, 4/6/2016, Amazon has a heck of a good deal on this Dewalt DCK281D2 20V Max brushless compact drill and impact driver kit.
Normally, just the impact driver kit, or just the drill kit, cost $199 each. Then the other tool as an add-on is usually $119 each. This combo is normally priced at $279 or so, giving you some savings over buying the same stuff separately.

So, with this deal, you’re saving about $79-80 off the combo’s regular price, and quite a bit over buying the tools separately.

Why so cheap?
$200 is usually a good price for a pro-grade compact drill and impact driver kit. So how and why is this Dewalt brushless drill and impact driver kit $200, even for just one day?
Both the DCD790 drill (here’s our preview) and DCF886 impact driver (here’s our first look of that tool) came out in 2013. They’re still great tools, but they’re in the process of being replaced by new models, the DCD791 compact brushless drill and DCF887 compact brushless 3-speed impact driver, which are selling at the same price.

There’s a new combo kit with the new brushless drill and impact, and also a new hammer drill and impact combo. Pretty soon, as these combos become more widely stocked and advertised, as well as single tool kits of the new tools, users will lose interest in this deal of the day combo unless its price goes down.
So if you ask me, the purpose of this deal is to sell as many of these Dewalt brushless combo kits as possible. That’s generally the purpose of any sale, but in this case maybe the reasoning runs a little deeper.
I think that this is a very tempting deal, and am not envious of the decision a lot of people are going to face today. If you have been wanting to upgrade to Dewalt’s compact brushless tools, or maybe just some brand’s compact brushless drill and impact without having yet committed to Dewalt, here’s the big question:
Buy this combo kit, at its great price, knowing that it comes with last-generation tools, or spend more on one of the new combo kits in order to get the better next-generation versions of the same tools?
Both kits come with 2x 2.0Ah Li-ion battery packs, a charger, and carrying case.
The drill and impact driver are fantastic models, and although they’re seemingly being replaced by newer models, they’re still worth buying. The Dewalt DCD790 brushless drill in this kit was ranked as the best compact drill in our buying guide in 2015, and the Dewalt DCF886 impact driver was our editor’s choice impact driver.
Yes, the newer versions offer some benefits, here’s a longer preview about the Dewalt DCD791 brushless drill, and here’s a longer post about the Dewalt DCF887 brushless impact driver, but you won’t find a combo kit of those tools at $200 anytime soon.
This is a very tempting deal, although the sense of urgency of the limited time and potentially limited supply nature tends to complicate things.
If you can spend more, the newer models offer better performance and enhanced features, such as a new multi-mode LED worklight and 3 speed/torque settings on the impact. But I doubt you’ll find that new combo on sale for $200 anytime soon.
For the DCD790 and DCF886 combo kit, $200 is a hot deal.
Comparing down, the Dewalt DCK780C2 is priced at $199. It comes with a Dewalt DCD780 drill, DCF885 impact driver, and 1.5Ah batteries. I reviewed that drill in 2012, after both tools were released with the launch of the Dewalt 20V Max lineup in 2011.
So for the same price as that kit – okay, $1 more – you get an upgrade from brushed motors to brushless, better LED worklight placement, better performance, and higher capacity battery packs.
I hope you can see why I think this is such a good deal. I hate the sense of urgency that comes from one-day deals and the “if I don’t buy it right now I might lose out” feeling.

Deal ends at 3am ET 4/7/2016, unless supplies run out sooner.
Question for you: Amazon is offering free same-day Prime delivery on this cordless combo kit in my area (I’m a Prime subscriber). If you’re a Prime member, do you see the same offer? It says that if I order by 12 pm, I’ll receive it TODAY. That’s just crazy. I’m just wondering how widespread their free same-day shipping capabilities extend to.
Also, what do you think about this deal?

Thinking about picking this up for my first drill kit. Should I get this or should I go to HD and pick up one of there current M12 Fuel deals. Opinions please. Drills won’t be used for much more that some DIY projects and around the house things. Thanks in advance.

Think about the next 3 years. Does Milwaukee’s M12 lineup appeal to you more, or Dewalt’s 20V Max?
The Dewalt 20V Max tools can do everything the Milwaukee M12 drill and (single speed) impact can do, but the reverse is not going to be true.

It’s a great price on a drill and impact that will last you a long time. For a quality drill and impact, it’s worth investing in new batteries as these tire out. I have this set and highly recommend it for home owner use/DIY projects. The impact is really handy, just make sure you buy impact ready bits for it, too.

Also look at the tool lineup. Does one offer more of the tools you think you might be wanting in the future? I’d say the DW 20V Max setup would be more powerful in general, but the M12 lineup offers more tools.

Dewalt 20V MAX is the way to go. Made in USA also.
Milwaukee is made in china and owned by company in china.

I recently got a 3-speed impact thinking ‘gimmick’ but got it anyway because it was on sale as cheap as the single speed at the time I needed one. Now that I have the 3:speed, I wouldn’t t want to be without it. I can set it on low making it less likely for one of the kids to snap off a screw, yet in 3rd has notably more power than my old one. Also, the lower ranges don’t seem to just be a limiter of top speed, the lower ranges work through the full trigger range to offer more precise control, as well. As impacts gain more and more power, the ability to limit output and increase control becomes more useful.

We have a deal right now at The Power Tool Store in Green Bay, WI (920-336-7440) to get the DeWalt DCK296P2, so the same kit above but with the hammer drill and 5ah batteries for only $299, and we give you another 4ah battery for free. That is a lot more stuff for only $100 more. The one we have is also made in the USA in case that is of importance.
Unfortunately we only have 13 left!

Lowes Black Friday Deal has a 20V 3 tool kit for $179 ( plus additional 10% Vets disc YMMV so +/-$151). Not the top of the line. But $20 cheaper. Also If you have a local store that does fuel points purchasing with a gift card. (Locally here it would be <$.30 gal/up to 35 gallons it would save another $10 again YMMV)
Kit includes DCD771 1/2" compact drill/driver, DCF885 1/4" impact driver, DCL040 LED (light emitting diode) worklight, (2) 20V MAX lithium-ion batteries, charger, and contractor bag.

Man thats an awesome price for a really nice kit to get started in the Dewalt line.
Im waiting for the 996 and 991 to surface.
Tyler
Oh man that’s tempting, but I really don’t need it. I’ll just have to live vicariously through others.

For anyone interested: my local Home Depot (near Pittsburgh) has this kit with the 1.5 Ah batteries for $199 right now and a premium hammer drill/impact combo for $299.
