I don’t think we’ve discussed Dewalt’s line of cutting shears, but they have a couple of models of 20V Max cordless cutting shears, designed for making clean cuts in different types of sheet metal.
Now, they’ve come out with new shears specially designed for cutting fiber cement boards.

The new Dewalt DCS498 can cut fiber cement boards of up to 5/8″ thick, and Dewalt says that it can do this with little to no dust created during the cutting action.
It also features an LED worklight with 20 second off-delay.
The DCS498 has an on/lock-off control button, a variable speed trigger switch, and on-board hex wrench storage. The hex wrench is used for rotating or changing the cutter blades.
Price: $399 for the kit (DCS498M1), $249 for the bare tool (DCS498B)
The kit comes with a charger, carrying bag, and (1) 4.0Ah battery.

Just thinking aloud… The body of the tool, minus the cutting head, looks really similar between the different shears. Makes me wonder if they couldn’t make a tool with a bunch of different cutting attachments instead of several different models.
I’m sure someone who needs this type of tool professionally would disagree, preferring a tool specific to the task. For me though, it’s so specialized I wouldn’t even consider it – but if there was a tool that was in that range or a little higher that had attachments for purchase separately… could be interesting.

I considered the same, but as you mentioned, it’s a specialized tool. Something like this is going to be purchased for a lot repetitive applications, and so modular-style tool heads might be unlikely to be used, or likely to be misplaced or list.

and I don’t know that a professional wouldn’t want a similar feature. If the attachments were secure and functioned correctly – why would it matter?
Then you have one tool to cart with 4 functions (8 whatever) – and when the cutters go bad – you could just sell an new attachment for that one function.
anyway I’m a bit surprised at fibre cement shears so I’d want to see this in action.

I suppose you’re right if the attachments worked correctly and didn’t compromise the utility of the main function. I suppose I just had in mind something like those Black & Decker matrix tools where the attachments work, but their function isn’t as great as if you had all of those attachments as individual tools.
E.g. I wondered if the reason Dewalt chose not to do this is because having a removable attachment system would increase the overall size of the tool or make it weaker or something along those lines.

honestly the cutter head and gear box might well be the most expensive parts.
Look at the rest – the motor, and handle system – even electronics might well have just come off the recip saw. rinse and repeat. So make 300K of those or 400K of them – cost is ________
20K of the cutter heads could well be more than that. So the motor is a disposable commodity. probably true to some degree today.

This is a good tool, they have 4 different models of that tool, DCS491, DCS494, DCS496 and DCS498.
To have them all in one, can make more repair issues for DeWALT and also they would sell less, I think they better make separate tools like this and additionally a tool with different cutting attachments.
