Dewalt DCL079B LED Tripod Light

Dewalt’s 20V Max cordless LED tripod-base worklight, DCL079B, is currently on sale at Amazon. At the time of this posting, it’s $159, which is $20 to $40 off its regular price.

Lyle wrote in with the deal tip (thank you!):

I’ve been looking for a good tripod light for a while. Since I have a lot of Dewalt batteries, I’ve put in a notification in camelcamelcamel for a specific price. I got notified earlier this week that the price had dropped. Now Amazon has this light (tool only) for $159 for Prime. Normally this is $199 or $179. I just thought you might like to let your readers know.

I hope they don’t improve it and come out with a better one too soon (like can operate on AC, built in charger, or individual adjustable lights) like the Milwaukee one.

This really is a nice LED worklight, and from the look of the reviews over at Amazon, that seems to be the popular opinion.

It features a 7′ height adjustment range, 3000 lumen brightness rating, and 3 brightness settings. It folds down for easy carrying and storage.

Amazon’s product imagery says it’s rated to IP55 water and dust resistance, although Dewalt’s website says it’s IP54.

Dewalt says the runtime is over 11 hours, presumably at the low brightness setting and with a 6.0Ah battery (because that’s what the DCL079R1 kit comes with).

It’s a fantastic light at a lower than usual price.

Sale Price: $159 for the bare tool
MSRP: $199

It’s $151 now, but only 2 in stock. I will be buying another one of those eventually, just not right now…

Amazon looks to have plenty in stock. Are you looking at the not-fullfilled-by-prime 3rd party sellers?

I have one. Got it from ACME last winter for about $179. Was hoping to see one closer to $130 before I jump again. They are nice, but I don’t NEED another one yet.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this thing for a while and been really tempted to pick one up. The ability to have a battery powered light using my existing assortment of Dewalt batteries and tote it anywhere would be huge. The only disconcerting thing I keep seeing mentioned in the reviews I have read on multiple sites is there seems to be a weakness or defect in the black plastic hinge mounting point design causing them to break. Does anyone have experience with this or is it something that seems to have been resolved by Dewalt?

Haven’t had any issues with mine. Had it close to a year, and it’s been used, transported, bumped, dropped, and smacked a fair number of times. Only complaint would be how drastically the run time is affected between the different settings, but that seems to be the norm for new high powered job lights these days.

Saw that, I’ll definitely try to watch out for that. My plan is to eventually have a second one of these tripod lights, and a second magnetic personal light to cover any specific task coverage me and/or a crew might need, but if there’s durability issues, maybe I’ll end up exploring some of the other larger lights.

I paid $79 for mine. I love that light and use it regularly. I wasn’t sure how much I Would like it so I only bought one, wish I would’ve bought 2. I’ll buy another one eventually. I do wish that it had ToolConnect though. . .

Holy moly, how did you get this for $79?!? I would buy 2 for that price. I’ve been looking at this for a while and it seems like Dewalt has addressed the problems with the small cracks that was causing the failures.

In store during a Acme tools sale. I should’ve bought two, just hard to justify when I’ve got so many other lights lol. But after using it I do really like how the light source is nice and high which seems to illuminate the work space better.

Mine tipped over and the black plastic leg hinge broke. It looks like replacement parts are available for about $20. I haven’t gotten around to repairing it yet because it will stand on level ground without the legs.
Overall I am happy with the lights performance.

Mine broke in the same spot, it didn’t tip over or anything, just picked it up one day and it was broke. Take it to a DeWalt service center and swap it out, they need to see that the hinge needs a bit of beefing up.

    I want this so badly!

Kind of a side note (2 actually). I saw a couple of articles about holiday deals, and while it’s early still, I have a feeling we are going to have the same discussion we had last year that there are no really, truly, amazing, & great holiday deals.

There’s one exception – Stuart’s annual holiday generosity. As I do every year I just wanted to say thanks to Stuart on behalf of all of your readership. You’re a really generous guy. ( sorry for off topic) The growth & success of the site over the years hasn’t diminished your kindness. Rare! Thanks again

      Thank you!

Last year’s holiday deals weren’t too bad, it all depends on what you’re looking for. There are little price drops on misc. tools like this one to help keep things interesting.

These lights always seem expensive for what they are. It’s a bulky single-purpose tripod, of dubious build quality, and fetches about the same money as a middle-of-the-range photographer’s tripod and a standalone tool-system light.

Why not just buy a photographer’s tripod and a tool-system light? Graft the photo quick-release plate onto the light so it clips into the tripod head. Buy a spare plate so you can still use the tripod for your DSLR or whatever.

Bonus: Photographers’ tripods don’t seem to suffer the build-quality issues I see described with these tool-system tripods. I’ve had my Promaster for years now, knocked it around quite a bit, and it still functions like the day it was new. I think you can get more, for less, by skipping the gimmick and using proven parts.

The reason I would prefer this and many of the cordless tools I own is: battery platform. I plan to stick with one system for now, so there is a built in value already. I started with dewalt last winter based on one tool I wanted; pex expander. I have been slowly adding the tools I want, and sticking with dewalt 20/60 since they are compatible. I willing to conceede there are some better items from other manufacturers. I just don’t see a benefit for me. Total DIYer by the way.

I got the Milwaukee 3000 lumen m18 light with 5ah battery for $130ish (I think) it was on a home depot deal of the day. It’s not a tripod light but I can’t think where I need that ability.
