I just posted about the new Dewalt DCF850 Atomic impact driver bare tool being on sale and in short supply. Home Depot has a couple in stock at most stores near me (according to the website, as I can’t actually find them in-store), and other retailers have extended ETAs.
I wondered whether there would be any other kit options, and started searching. Right now, there’s the DCF850P1 kit, with charger, tool bag, and 5Ah battery, but might there also be a kit where the impact driver is bundled with the new Dewalt 20V Max PowerStack battery? That new battery won’t be out for two more months, but I thought to check for a potential kit nonetheless, or in case there were any other compact battery kit options (there aren’t).

While I didn’t find any new kits or configurations, I did come across what looks to be a really deal for the DCF850P1 kit.
Buy the Dewalt Atomic 3-speed impact driver kit – this is of course the new super-compact stubby model – and get a FREE bonus 5Ah battery.
So, you get the Dewalt DCF850 impact driver, (2) 5Ah batteries, a charger, and a tool bag, for the kit’s regular price of $199.
Over at Amazon, they have 2-packs of Dewalt 5Ah batteries priced at $149 right now, and the 2-battery plus charger and tool bag starter kit is priced at $175. $199 for the impact driver kit that’s regularly $199, plus a free extra 5Ah battery seems to be a very good deal.
Acme Tools says that the Atomic impact driver kit is out of stock and “usually ships in 3-5 weeks.” I would expect that the kits are fulfilled on a first-come-first-served basis.

not sure who I would sell it too. but the 5AH battery seems to have become the standard battery like the 2AH compact was a while ago. Crazy.

This one is more powerful and faster than my current one, but I happen to really like the one I have and it has yet to be inadequate for any task I’ve had for it so I’m sticking with it until it fails. I did buy the similar 3/8″ impact wrench however.

I have been through the old 887, m12 & m18 fuel milwaukee impacts and now the XDT16 which has become my favorite.
Dewalt had the best bit removal system, milwaukee m18 was the most powerful and the makita feels the smoothest by a fair margin. No unnecessary vibrations and the trigger response is crisp.
It’s amazing how cheap these tools have become, $99 for the bare tool is just insane considering what these impacts can do, not to mention they’re quite well built and designed to last some time. 99 bucks usually don’t get you much these days…
I don’t need 2 impact drivers but I sure want the dewalt. Looks really sleek

The bare tool sold out in one day in my local area. Talk about a hot product. I wanted to get in on Dewalt cordless and having looked at the other options (4ah + 6ah kit + free tool, free battery kit with two bare tools) when I saw this at the store it seemed the way to go. Since the shills have been tripping over themselves to make youtube videos about this impact, I wanted to know the “real deal”. Besides, I never say “no” to drivers and drills. You can never have too many. When I opened the kit and saw it came with a 2 amp charger, however, I felt burned. A 2amp charger? In 2021? I felt the same way when I picked up a Milwaukee kit and got a 3 amp charger. Are you kidding me? 😂
Since there are freaks and weirdos obsessed with this: the batteries and tool are made in Mexico. I haven’t disassembled it yet, but the build quality seems slightly better than Milwaukee.
The ball detent bit holder/chuck has a Festool Carvex like eject system that I didn’t ask for (Flex has one too, correct?). I’ll spit out hot jigsaw and sawzall blades all day long. I don’t want to shoot out bits on the floor: they’re not spent. That spring makes it want to do the obvious, btw, jump out of a screw. Surprisingly, it does not jump out as much as the Milwaukee.
I’ve owned or own impacts from Makita, Hitachi/Hikoki/HPT, Bosch, Milwaukee, Festool and now Dewalt. The two Japanese brands are a pleasure to use. They are smooth driving, very precise, have no vibration and allow me to use them one handed and have complete control no matter if I’m doing tiny hardware screws or hammering home foot long construction screws. Makita’s, being the superior. The Bosch’s came close in all but two spots: they’re wimpy and large. The Festool I had was a lemon, insane runout, so, no comment. I really hated the grip.
Now to Mikwaukee and Dewalt. The Milwaukee is very powerful, it also has more runout, wants to jump out of screws, has a large handle (a positive for many people), is not as controllable, requires two hands and knocks your arm about. The dewalt is slightly more controllable than the Milwaukee, has a handle between Milwaukee and Makita (“medium”), requires two hands and will straight up give you tennis elbow. It seems to punch as hard as the Milwaukee on the business end, but punches out the back end twice as much.
I noticed a phenomenon where everyone said the Milwaukee is compact, but in my hands, the Makita felt smaller. This new Dewalt is getting attention for it’s compactness, but, again, the Makita still feels smaller.
I like where Dewalt put the LED’s. The old Bosch got that right. Makita is still doing it better, somehow, with only two.
Can you tell that I’m getting bored of writing this novella? Despite nitpicking it to death and it beating up my elbow and being a wild rascal, I do like this impact. It feels good in the hand, it gets the job done, seems well built. That’s the important stuff.

Woah that’s a lot of info! I’m glad you like it, I suppose I will like it too like I did the 887. I actually loved the bit ejection system, for shorter bits and hex drill bits it was a breeze.
I switched to the Milwaukee for more power but I never got to understand the tool, it was simply too powerful and “unrefined”. Made me feel like if I was on a job site when I was doing more delicated woodworking and diy tasks. In paper it is compact but it feels big due to the long handle. Also I don’t like the sound the Milwaukee battery makes when you knock on them, they sound hollow. Knock a DEWALT battery and it sounds absolutely solid.
There was something about that dcf887 that made it feel really comfortable and light to use, and even though the makita is extremely well balanced there is some heft to be felt every time I pick it up. I think the 850 with the power stack battery is the way to go. These impact drivers nowadays are ridiculously powerful, any more power and it wouldn’t make any sense to use 1/4” hex anymore.
Would’ve been nicer to have a “USA assembly with global materials” but not a deal breaker for me. My Chinese makita doesn’t feel as well made as my old DCD996.

The Milwaukee batteries are the only ones where I can squeeze the sidewalls and get my finger underneath the top half of the battery.
The Milwaukee impact itself, the “hammer mechanism assembly” (gearbox and hammering mechanism) undoes itself because it’s held together with a friction fit and not screwed in. I re lubed a Makita and needed a vise and large pliers wrench to crack it open. The Milwaukee, it’s already come apart after you use it. Which ain’t good since there’s a bearing and a bunch of gears that go further out of alignment in the process. Can’t be too bad otherwise it would be a known thing. But, it’s a thing nonetheless.
If you like the previous 887, you will like this one. I’ve had instances where tools manage to get swapped and so I’ve used it before. It’s near identical with a different balance and of course the stubbiness.

This is a great deal on the DCF850P1 kit, especially when you include the “Free 5AH Battery” w/ the purchase of one of the 5 new select DeWalt tools at Home Depot. Just look for the new DeWalt aisle endcap display. I have found the display set up on an endcap OR along the front wall depending on the Home Depot store.
Making this deal even more interesting is that the receipt prints out that the “Max Refund Value” of this “free battery” is $88.38, so if you were to return the battery within the return period, the kit
(impact driver, charger, battery, and bag) is essentially $110.62 plus tax.

Big Richard is 100% right about this. I tried to buy the 3/8 impact several times and the employees in the store simply didn’t know where the merchandise was. It wasn’t until my 4th stop by that I got lucky and found an actually helpful employee who found their stock. It was the exact same for me: they had plenty of them, they were just set aside with the rest of the holiday merchandise way up on pallets far away from the tool isle waiting for them to be set out on the black friday display.

I have to say there have been 2 times in furniture making when I wished my 887 was smaller/shorter. but both times were odd cases where I ended up using a bit holder and ratchet for the screw anyway.
and both were cases were if I had the new Dewalt drill driver set or the bosch flex clik device it would have been better all around. but I had neither.
So clearly I’m getting one of those soon too I suspect. I have alot of new wants this year.

Home Depot has this sale going on right now. I bought both the impact kit and the 5amp battery last night. At the register, the battery zeroed out, giving me both for $199.
There was no sign to indicate this sale, but it must be in their computers somehow. This appears to be an in-store only sale.

One of my stores had the sign, the other did not (at least I didn’t see it). While the prices are live, the deal itself is likely not going to be advertised until their Black Friday ad. Most stores also don’t seem to have them on the floor yet, still up in overstock.

Wanted to confirm this is a real deal. I just returned my driver plus battery combo, and rebought it with an additional 5 amp battery – which – rang up for free.

They might beholding onto this for Black Friday. If any of my stores (I’ve been to 5) have these, they’re all hidden away. The website also doesn’t show anything.

Home depot has a deal where you get a free 5ah battery if you buy this kit. And you can take the 5ah back for $90. So you get the driver and a 5ah battery and a 700mah charger for $120-$130. I bought the impact alone and took it back to get this deal because it was only $10-$20 more for a 5ah battery and a charger.
