Deal of the Day: Dewalt 20V Max 4-pc Cordless Combo Kit (06/14/2016)

Over at Amazon, the Dewalt 20V Max 4-tool combo kit, model DCK421D2, is their Deal of the Day. This deal first debuted on December 2nd, 2014, reemerged on June 15th, 2015, and then again on December 1st, 2015, and again on June 14th, 2016.

This kit comes with a compact drill/driver (DCD780), compact impact driver (DCF885), basic circular saw (DCS393), and an LED worklight (DCL040). It also includes a kit bag, standard charger, and (2) 2.0Ah Li-ion battery packs. These are the latest higher capacity compact batteries.

The combo is on sale for $249, and is also eligible for Amazon’s $20 off $100+ Dewalt Father’s Day discount.

Sale price: $229 after all discounts.

See Also: there’s also a deal on a Dewalt 20V Max hammer drill and drilling + driving accessory set.

The deal is valid 6/14/2016 only, and will expire at 3am ET 6/15, or until supplies run out, whichever comes sooner. The deal is quite good and doesn’t come around very often, and so there’s a good chance it could sell out well before it expires.

I reviewed the DCD780 cordless drill several years ago, and it remains a great model. Is it brushless? No. Does it feature the latest and greatest tech? No. But it’s a solid drill that’s reliable and comfortable to use.

I am also quite fond of the DCF885 impact driver. The brushless DCF886 that is based off of it was my Editor’s Choice pick in our 2015 best impact driver recommendations.

The DCS393 circular saw is Dewalt’s basic model, meaning it doesn’t have the better magnesium shoe found on their premium DCS391 saw. This saw has a high strength steel shoe, which might not be a big deal to you when talking about a $229 4-tool combo. The premium DCS391 saw is my editor’s choice pick in my 2015 best cordless circular saws recommendations. I believe both saws are the same except for the different shoes.

The DCL040 is a decent LED worklight. Dewalt has recently come out with a new one, but there’s nothing wrong with this one. The new one isn’t replacing this one, it’s just brighter and broader.

I am also surprised that Dewalt bundled this kit with their higher capacity 2.0Ah Li-ion compact battery packs. That’s a nice touch and means you get even more value with this combo.

$229 is a great price. Normally just a drill and impact driver kit with 1.5Ah batteries goes for $199. So here, for the extra $50 you get a circular saw, LED flashlight, and better batteries.

A quick search for the DCK421D2 kit number continues to show nothing but Amazon deal references, meaning that this is likely a combo kit that Dewalt created specially for Amazon. That shouldn’t discourage you, as all of the power tools are main-line products.

There doesn’t seem to be any cheapened tools as part of this combo, aside from the non-premium version of the circular saw. The drill/driver is the regular DCD780 drill, and not the holiday-special DCD771.

This appears to be an Amazon-specific SKU, and we have seen the deal repeated for the past few winter holiday and Father’s Day shopping seasons. The deal could come back again in a few months, or this could be the last time.

Historically, I don’t think this combo has sold out early. But if you’re worried about that order it first and think it over later. If you’re quick enough you can cancel the order, and if you have buyer’s remorse you can usually send it back with the only penalty being unrefunded shipping fees.

Buy Now(via Amazon)

I don’t think that Amazon’s $20 off $100+ Dewalt holiday discount has ever applied to this combo before, making the $229 pricing better than the $249 pricing I’ve seen during previous incarnations of this deal.

I have the flashlight that is in this kit and also the newer trouble light. The flashlight is more like a long distance spotlight and the trouble light is great for repair work.

Are you sure about that? This model isn’t on Lowe’s website.

I believe he is referring to the DCK420D2 kit.

He mentions that separately after saying he saw the exact same kit. I know about the recip kit, cannot find any other seller with this exact combo kit.

Would have been a great deal if it was a Hammer drill, still not bad.

do you mean ‘heavy duty hammer drill’ (DCD985)? I don’t understand why anyone wants hammer mode on a compact drill…

A 12V hammer drill can drill holes up to 3/8″ in a pinch, and 1/4″ holes quite comfortably. A compact 18V/20V Max hammer drill would be similarly convenient.

A heavy duty hammer drill is nice to have for heavy duty non-masonry tasks, but for frequent or demanding masonry-drilling tasks, a rotary hammer is still the better choice.

In most cases, a heavy duty rotary hammer drill won’t be used for masonry drilling tasks that a compact hammer drill cannot also handle.

Isn’t the DCS391 the circular saw with the better shoe? I thought the DCS393 was the combo version with the stamped shoe.

Yes, but the image shows the basic one. It also shows 1.5Ah batteries, but the D2 part confirms it should come with 2.0Ah batteries.

The saw image shows the premium circular saw with a 3.0Ah battery that definitely for not come with the kit.

Either the description is wrong, or the image of the kit is wrong. The wasn’t time to check, so I figured it would be better to assume this comes with the basic saw. Better to expect the basic saw and get the premium one than the other way around.

Thank you Stuart. I ordered the kit yesterday so I’m hoping its the DCS391 but like you said its better to expect the lesser one and be surprised with the better one.

Cordless hammer drills definitely make quick work of 1/4, 3/8 and even 1/2″ holes in brick and concrete. I have a rotary hammer, but for a quick anchoring of a utility sink or a vent in a brick wall, why wouldn’t you want that utility in your pocket whenever you need it?

Plus – chances are good that a cordless hammer drill will have heavier duty guts than a standard duty cordless drill.

Other than a bit more weight, what are the drawbacks, even if you only use it a fraction of the time? The cost is not too much more in terms of kit cost.

The only drawback I have found (other than weight) is that on every hammer drill I have ever owned or used, the chuck has a bit of fore/aft play, even when not in the hammer mode. My current DeWalt hammer drill is so bad I bought a separate non-hammer drill for precision work. Unless I got a lemon, I would just as soon get a separate drill for masonry. I can’t tell you how many times I drilled a hole a little off chipped a drill bit, or dropped a self-drilling sheet metal screw because of it.

Heads up!!!! I was at the Home Depot today and found a 3 piece tough case kit with a drill impact and light in a large tough case for 399. Kit had one large and 1 compact battery and charger. Deal also included a free bare tool, sawzaw, multitool…ect. Wanted to look inside but no display model. Any word?? Is it brushless? ?

I’m fairly sure they’re 2Ah batteries, at least just going by the yellow color. The black-topped batteries are 1.5Ah, or 1.3Ah if talking about one of the DCD771 consumer drill kits.
