Dewalt DWMT45049 Mechanics Tool Set

Over at Home Depot, this Dewalt 1/2″ mechanics tool set, DWMT45049, is on sale as part of their tool deals of the day.

The deals of the day focus on other automotive tools and equipment, but I thought this Dewalt mechanics tool set would be of especially strong interest. Personally, I started with a 1/4″ and 3/8″ socket set, and then I had to buy all of my 1/2″ tools separately.

With this Dewalt deal, you get a ratchet, bit driver, extension, and selection of shallow sizes in inch and metric sizes.

The 22pc screwdriver bit set drives up the tool count to 49 pieces, but the price still seems fair if you consider the ratchet, extension, and 24 socket sizes.

  • 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, 1 inch

    HD has a strange add on torque thing – Internet# 203117027 if you want to link it up – has anyone used this? It seems like it could be real janky but it claims 1% accuracy.

          The other sort of “torque ad-on thingy” are torque limiters that sit between your ratchet and socket. A few are adjustable – but most release at preset torque values. They seem to be popular among gunsmiths.

      Why source through the US?

      Journey out to the local economy and find a set of Stahlwille wrenches and Hazet sockets while you can. You could also stock up on Knipex, Wera, and Wiha cheaper than we can as it’s all locally made.

    I have a set similar to this, minus the bit driver and bits. It seems well made, and the ratchet handle is comfortable. For the price, DeWalt mechanics tools are hard to beat, especially if you catch them on sale. I’m pretty sure they are all made in Taiwan, but until SBD gets their USA-made tools in stores, these are a great choice.

    my issue is a 1/2 drive ratchet and socket set that goes too low on the sockets and not high enough.

    IE run 15mm – 27 or so mm.

    15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,24,26,27 – is in my opinion more useful. and same on the SAE side stop at 5/8ths or such.

    I too would like to see sockets geared more toward the larger end rather than sizes that overlap into 1/4 drive territory. Especially given the DIY nature of this set. Those of us that have worked with tools for years and understand lever arms and the application of torque may be OK. My new home-owning kids are likely just to snap off a lot of tiny bolts with the smaller sockets in this set.

    I fear the addition of the larger, open stock 1/2 drive sockets needed to complete out a decent set (I mean, this is why you need 1/2 drive in the first place, right?) may nullify any “value” here.

    I’m curious… does anyone else hate that so many manufactures include the driver bits in the socket sets? It seems that if somebody wants driver bits, they would be better served by just buying a dedicated bit set. This would also warrant lowering the price a couple bucks. I can’t help but feel that they do this so that they can artificially increase piece count when they advertise the set. My biggest frustration is 1) I already have bits of know quality and 2) it makes it difficult for a beginning DIYer to comparison-shop socket sets when you are looking for the best value in a given price range without having to subtract out the bits.

    depends on the set in this set it makes no sense other than filler.

    but in a 1/4 drive set or even perhaps a 3/8 set it makes some sense. In 1/4 drive it’s common to get a bit holder and a spinner handle as part of a larger or more complete 1/4 drive kit. I love me a spinner handle with a 1/4 drive on the end cap so it can get a ratchet assist. IE double as a extension.
