Over at Home Depot, today’s deal of the day is this Dewalt DWS709 12″ dual bevel sliding compound miter saw. As I mentioned in our Black Friday 2015 miter saw deals post, this seems to be the DWS782 replacement saw.
This saw looks to be heavily based on the DWS780 sliding miter saw we reviewed, but with 2 main differences: no LED shadow-lighting guidance system, and lower cutting capacity.

The Dewalt DWS709 miter saw has a maximum cutting capacity of 2″ x 14″ at 90°, and 2″ x 10″ at 45°, while the DWS780 can handle 2″ x 16″ at 90° and 2″ x 12″ at 45°.
While not a flagship model, the DWS709 is typically a great value, at $399. It’s on sale today for $339.
If you were looking to buy a 12″ sliding miter saw, and you don’t need the best of the best, this one’s a great choice. And as a reminder, it’s a dual bevel model.
I don’t think I would consider this a budget model, it’s more of a reasonably capable but not top-dollar saw.
It’s heavily marketed during holiday seasons, so there are plenty of user reviews by now. Most are positive, with the negative ones being outliers.

Dewalt is confusing about this. The DWS780 is their flagship (well, corded flagship, anyway)…and they offer this as a step down model, but they also have a 782 that pops up around most major holidays. It is usually $399 w/ their big metal miter stand included.
The 782 is nearly identical to the 780 (it has the higher capacity of the 780 unlike the 709, and also has a cam lock instead of the screw), but also lacks the light, and has some plastic parts in places that the 780 uses higher quality. But, I don’t think the 782 accepts the XPS light, either.
Last I read the 709 would take the XPS module, but only if the ‘type’ was right. There was a redesign somewhere along the line that removed the compatibility, and it was extremely annoying trying to determine which one would take it based on sku’s. I gave up and just got the smaller 20v miter saw, as I had little need for huge cut capacity but really liked the XPS system for my poorly lit garage.

My understanding is that this model, DWS709, replaces the DWS782 that was the previous step-down model.
I don’t recall any DWS782 plus miter saw stand promo. The miter saw promo is usually for the DWS780, and it happens at unpredictable times during the year.
The compatibility listing for the lighting system says nothing about the DWS709, which came out sometime in early 2015.
Thanks for the information about the DWS709 having some plastic parts instead of metal. I wasn’t aware of this. But I also haven’t seen any complaints about durability or anything of the sort, at least not yet.

Ah ok, I didn’t realize the 709 was newer. I haven’t looked at miter saws closely since around memorial day 2015.
It was the 782 that various forum posts had illustrating the cost cutting differences from the 780 (also, oddly, the 782 was said to have a ‘better’ set of slide bearings, though). The changed pieces were in areas like the bevel lock on the rear, the cam lock being plastic instead of aluminum, as well as the detent override. I never saw anything about the 709, so not sure if that has some plastic pieces, but it’s clearly a different saw, where as the 782 is built on the same design/platform.
and yeah, not sure about the 709 and XPS; it was the 782 that was ‘semi compatible’ depending on the type number from what I remember. The newer type had a changed handle from the 780 that would not accept the wiring for the XPS properly, or something along those lines.
Lastly, you’re probably correct, as after thinking about it the 782 w/ stand at $399 would be a crazy deal. I’m assuming it was the 782 at $399 and the 780 at $599 w/ stand during those specials. My local HD had 782’s in stock again around memorial day a few months ago, but that could just be getting rid of existing saws to make way for the 709 as a replacement?

Actually I believe the DWS779 is closer to the DWS782. The DWS709 is a downgrade from wither of those.

No, you cannot install the LED worklight system onto this saw.
Dewalt says the LED module is only compatible with the following saws:
DW713 TYPE 1, DW715 TYPE 1 & 2, DW716 TYPES 1 -4, DW717 ALL TYPES, DW718, ALL TYPES

If I were to buy it at Home Depot it would be $339 plus tax – or $368.24 out the door – but I could pick it up.

Great find. On a side note if one is to look at the photo closely there are multiple screw holes on all sides, bottom and back, which are threaded. I always assumed they were for various accessories. However, being sick one day, browsing Dewalt’s websites in every language, Amazon and Googleing everything I could think of I could not find a single explanation or accessory to fit any of these random sized threaded holes. Anyone, who could offer explanation would be appreciated.

I’ve been working with the new FlexVolt saw, and there’s a small lever-like part at the rear that I simply can’t figure out either.

I sometimes add on a zero-clearance baseplate and backstop on my Bosch miter saw.
The Bosch has holes – not threaded so I use carriage bolts (set into counterbores) – with washers and wing-nuts to secure them. Threaded holes (if they are in the right place) would eliminate the need for the wing-nuts and washers
