Dewalt DWS780 Sliding Miter Saw

Fairly regularly, I’m asked about when Dewalt’s “buy a miter saw, get a free stand” promo will return. Well, it’s back, and has been for a few weeks, but I’m reminded of it thanks to all the Father’s Day deals going on right now.

Buy a Dewalt DWS780 12″ sliding miter saw, get a free DWX723 heavy duty miter saw stand.

The stand has a $199 value.

I haven’t used this heavy duy miter saw stand before, but I have used Dewalt’s shorter heavy duty workstands – not the ones with adjustable workpiece outriggers – and am really fond of its versatility and strength.

Dewalt’s XPS cut line guidance system is far superior than anything else I have ever seen. No laser comes anywhere close to the superiority of the XPS LED-lit shadow-based system.

Add both to your cart, with Amazon being the seller and shipper, and the discount should show up immediately at checkout. Deal ends 6/15/2016.

Despite a reader complaint about the DWS780’s guide rails, I don’t recall seeing any major issues back when I still had a test sample. Sliding the saw back and forth wasn’t exactly as smooth as a bead of liquid nitrogen floating along a flat warm surface (that’s the most frictionless scenario I could envision), but it wasn’t rough.

The DWS780, Dewalt’s most premium miter saw, isn’t exactly cheap, but bundling it with a free $200 saw stand definitely makes the saw’s $599 price easier to stomach.

This deal probably isn’t exclusive to Amazon, so you might want to check your favorite brick & mortar home improvement store. The saw is packed in a large box, and the saw stand is a little over 6-feet long when folded closed.

I have had this saw for a while now and it’s hands down the best miter I have used. The shadow system is amazing. I didn’t think I would like it but after the first cut I couldn’t believe there is a difference between lasers and the led light shadow. I did ditch the stand for a delta universal stand. I picked the stand up at Lowe’s for about $150. I have beat the living crap out of the stand and saw and they have held up great.

The 780 is my favourite mitre saw that I have had.
There is an issue with the rails. They seem to be bit sticky as I first start to move it. It then slides almost too easily, giving it a somewhat dangerous feel, especially given the mass of the head. And, although I have learned to deal with it, it has never been as satisfying to push (or pull) as say, a Makita slider.

I thought it was only me. We had had Makita’s which had their foibles – but we liked their sliding action. We swapped them out for Bosch GCM12SD’s that also have their issues – but the articulating arm glides really nice. When I retired and wanted to buy a miter saw – I tried the DWS780 at a warehouse supplier we used – and thought it was “sticky” – so went with the Bosch Glider. Using the Bosch for 4 years now – its not perfect – but like you I’ve gotten used to its plusses and minuses. At my point in life – its probably (unless it gets stolen or destroyed) the last saw that I’ll buy.

I am buying a new house and will need to redo the trim and replace the deck. This is the exact set up I was looking to purchase. Overkill for my needs, but at least I won’t wish I had gone with something more.

Great saw and stand. Bought this in December and really like it. Too bad this sale wasn’t going on when I purchased.

I bought this “deal” a few years ago. I am very happy with the saw and would recommend upgrading the blade for any kind of finish work.

As for the stand, I store my saw in my garage and found this set-up to be unwieldy. Instead, I purchased a Rigid MUV this past black-Friday for $100 down from $200 MSRP. It’s a little cheaply made, but the versatility of folding it up and wheeling it around is second to none. I’d love to get a heavier duty Bosch gravity stand, but my needs to warrant the cost.

Bottom line, the stand is certainly adequate, but will become annoying if you are jockeying it around the house or yard more than once a month.

I’ve never gotten a blade that came with a miter saw that was worth anything. We’d save them for cutting pressure treated lumber.

You can see why, however, if you price out a Forrest Miter Master – at $240 for the 12 inch – it costs more than a low-end saw

Lowe’s has this deal once or twice a year.
I have the 718. I got it for $350 when the 780 came out. I paid another $35 for the shadow cut line. Fantastic setup.

What’s the difference between Type 1 and Type 20 on a DWS 780 miter saw? Is it a newer model? Different size arbor ie: 5/8″ vs 1″

Usually it’s just a minor update that improves features or performance, or affects accessory compatibility.
