Dewalt DWS782 Sliding Miter Saw

We just learned that Dewalt will soon be coming out with a new 12″ sliding compound miter saw, model DWS782.

We reviewed and recommended the DWS780 sliding miter saw a while back, and aside from hearing about a few incidents of rough bearings and guide rails, the DWS780 has proven to be a very good saw that is generally well regarded. Dewalt never got back to us about whether there was any way to smoothen up the DWS780’s sliding motion when fully extended, but perhaps this is an area the DWS782 improves upon. Or maybe not, since the DWS782 appears to be engineered as a cost-cutting model.

There are basically two differences between the DWS782 and the DWS780. Unlike the DWS780, the DWS782 does NOT feature the XPS cross-cut LED illumination system. Additionally, the DWS780 comes with a 32T carbide blade instead of a 60T blade. All of the saws’ other features and technical specifications appear to be identical.

Features & Specifications

  • 15A motor
  • 3,800 RPM
  • Electronic brake
  • Max cutting capacity: 6-3/4″ max vertical, 7-1/2″ nested crown, 13-7/8″ horizontal
  • Max cutting capacity with back fence: 16″ x 2″ at 90°, 12″ x 2″ at 45°
  • 49° left and right bevel range with positive stops at 0°, 22.5°, 33.9°, 45°, 49°
  • Miter angles of 60° (right) and 50° (left) with adjustable detent plate and cam lock for between-detent angles
  • Dust collection captures “over 75%” of generated dust
  • Comes with (1) carbide blade, a blade wrench, dust bag, and vertical material clamp

ETA: May 2014
Price: $399
COO: Taiwan

The images we’ve seen of the DWS782 saw do show that an XPS LED module is present, but it looks like maybe the images are reused from the DWS780. A Dewalt sales representative has confirmed that the DWS782 will NOT feature the XPS cut-line projection module.

Right now the DWS780 is priced at $590 via Amazon, and the new DWS782 is priced as low as $399. If the pricing is accurate, then it looks like the DWS782 could very well be intended as a lower-cost alternative or replacement to the DWS780.

If you are on a tight budget, the DWS782 should provide similar performance to the DWS780 but with between $100 and $200 extra left in your wallet. But, to be frank, the integrated XPS LED cut-line shadow system is a very nice feature, and one that could be worth the added premium of the DWS780. You can add XPS LED modules to certain saws, but the DWS782 might not have been designed to accept the ~$35 add-on.

Given the May/mid-Spring ETA, the DWS782 miter saw could be intended as a Father’s Day special, in the same spirit as the Dewalt 20V Li-ion drill/driver that came out last Fall.

I absolutely love the xps worklight from Dewalt. It’s worth noting though, On the dws780 this is a very cool standard feature, and on a lot of their other saws, you could put this on as an accessory. Dewalt, for the past year, has been silently eliminating this feature from their saw lines. Anybody know why? This is the single greatest feature to be added to the saw, since someone put an led on drill drivers, and impact drivers. I feel it’s a step in the wrong direction, and I’m very concerned about it. Am I alone here?

My guess is that its to make more money. They probably make more money selling the xps worklight seperatly. Also id be worried what else they did to save that much money to sell the saw that low a price

I’d be ok with buying it separately. However, most of the new saws are making it incompatible all together. That’s a very big oversight, on the selling point (in my opinion) for their saws.

I’ve been doing HEAVY research on what sliding miter to buy, and this seems too good to be true, if it’s really just like the 780 without those 2 components. I’m pretty nervous about buying something with no reviews, though. But it looks like you can buy it right now on Amazon. Any words of advice???

I don’t think the DWS782 is shipping yet, so there’s no point in rushing to buy it.

At $400, the DWS782 seems like a great buy, but without the LED shadow lighting of the DWS780, it loses some of the advantage and appeal it has over competing models. If there are no other under-the-hood changes, it’s probably still going to be a great high-capacity sliding miter saw.

While the DWS782 lacks the LED module, the amount of money saved could mean a very nice high quality blade, or maybe even 2 blades.

As much as I want to fight it, spending the extra money for a premium third party blade will probably do a lot more to improve cut quality and saw performance than the DWS780’s XPS LED module.

If you don’t need the cutting capacity of the DWS782, then there are good reasons to go with a smaller, lighter, less expensive 10-inch model.

Thanks for the quick, helpful response! I’m still going nuts, then, on what saw to buy. Originally I was planning on just forking out about $200 for either the Kobalt at Lowe’s, the Ryobi at Home Depot, or the Craftsman at Sear’s, but I’ve had such good luck with Dewalts, I was willing to scoot up to this $400. But staying down in the $200 range could free up cash for a 3rd party blade like you mentioned. You also mentioned this 782 might lose its edge over competing models–what $400 range models do you like? Worth the extra cash? Bah, I just can’t decide!

I just bought the DWS782 from Home Depot for $399.00+tax. I’ve never used the 780, so I cannot really compare, but I have used a few others, including Festool Kapex. (which i would definitely have gotten if i had the $1400.00=tax to spend. it’s the best.)

The 782 comes with a cheaper blade than the 780, which isn’t big deal, and no light, which i don’t use anyway. The only (tentative) complaint I have with it so far after making several cuts, is the recoil. It kicks up when you pull the trigger pretty aggressively and drops down when you release it…moreso than any other saw I have used, including an older Dewalt 12″ non-sliding miter saw. After using the Festool Kapex, which has virtually NO recoil, the 782 will take some getting used to, which I don’t imagine taking long or ever being a problem…it was just surprising when I made my first cut.

It’s also surprisingly heavy, but manageable. (If you work in the trades and can’t lift the 68 lbs or whatever it is, people will make fun of you.)

Other than that it’s great given the price compared to the 780. Good Luck!

Received word from DeWalt Customer Service today:
    – The DWS780 and DWS782 are similar tools.
    – The DWS782 does not include the XPS system and is not designed to accept any light system after the fact.

I believe so. I cannot dig up a link at the moment, but you should be able to find a downloadable user manual on Dewalt’s site. If not, they should be able to send you one via email.

I just got off the phone with Dewalt customer service, and I’m kind of surprised nobody else has noticed. The BIGGEST difference between the two saws is not the lack of a light, but the DWS 782 does no offer a double bevel. The arm will swing left and right 45 degrees but the head doesn’t turn. Denied in my book, buying the 780.

That’s pretty surprising. I just double-checked a comparison checklist that a sales rep sent me a while back, and the only noted differences are that the DWS782 is built without XPS LED compatibility and ships with a lesser blade.

Any update on this feature being present or not? The light in itself isn’t worth the extra $200 to me, but the bevel may be…

782 does have a double bevel. just bought it. says on the box “Double Bevel Sliding Miter saw.”

I like it so far. Huge Recoil though compared with other saws i have used.

The head on my dws782 swivels, making it a dual bevel saw. Only fault I find with the saw, is the quick jerk it gives you right before cutting thru your materials. Other than that, its been a great saw. As far as not having a light/laser, I don’t miss something I never had. My opinion, the light/laser is for people in a hurry or can’t see their lines. Thank you.

Here are few things that might help to get an LED system.
The parts can be got from the DEWALT site
    1) The 782 handle is different from the 780. So we would need to get a 780 handle cover. This is because the LED power supply kind of need that nook to screw on.
    2) You can screw in the LED. Then you can pass a wire through the wire channel. Its like a black strip to the handle.
    3) The LED system takes power independently(If you like you can power it on from an independent power cord or tap into the one coming to the switch). You can connect into the line that goes to the switch. (black and white)

Dewalt is smart. The LED light that belongs to the 780 is $125 or so and the switch is $24. Handle is around $14. Cannot understand why the LED is so expensive or they know that if people know they can easily do this to other models too. Cause all the models have the channel to get the wire to the front. All they need is a separate handle cover (so get an older XPS compatible model) and get its handle. Then install the LED system.

All of the above is based on their parts diagram. And its an observation. Am not sure if does anything to your warranty.

Am not sure why they are removing it from the systems. My guess is that they might have some sort of patent issue.

Just bought the Dewalt DWS 780 for $599 at Lowes instead of the DWS 782 for $399. I wanted the light however a promotional sale offer sealed the deal. If you buy the $780 you get the Dewalt miter stand free (approximately $200), therefore making the two saws the same price.

I also picked this up at HD for $200; $200.04 plus tax to be exact.

Online price shows $399, but if you call the store and give them the SKU number, SKU# 917666, they can tell you the price plus inventory on hand. I called mine and they told me the price and said they had 3 in stock, and sure enough there were 3 on the top shelf in the tools dept.

Definitely worth a call if you’re in the market for a sliding miter saw.

Got one at HD for $160.01 + Tax. They accepted competitor’s coupon for 20% off. Best deal I’ve gotten in a long while. Couple of questions:
    1. Will this LED Laser work: Oshlun LG-M01 Miter and Portable Saw Laser Guide
    Link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002PMV4UG/

Seems easier than rewiring, etc, to get it to mimic the DSW780 laser feature.
    2. Any good suggestions for a stand with wheels to move this saw around so it doesn’t break my back?
