Over at Amazon, this Tanto-style Dewalt folding knife, DWHT10272, seems to have dropped in price, to $11. Or at least it seems to have dropped in price; I remember it costing a few bucks more.
It has a partially serrated stainless steel blade, thumb stud for one-handed opening, and a lightweight handle design.

The knife’s styling screams “tacticool,” but hey – the price is low enough and Tanto-style pointed blades are great for piercing tasks. This looks like a very jobsite-suitable pocket knife.
I’d toss something like this in my toolbox for “just in case” use. For regular use, I carry something better. And although I tend to have pricey knife preferences, there are plenty of great folding knives can be had in the $20 to $50 price range.
$11 seems fair for a beater that can handle a multitude of cutting tasks. The serrated edge should work great on fibrous materials, the straight edge on everything else, and the Tanto tip should work great for piercing or scoring.

I’ve always been pleased with Dewalt utility knives, and with prices like this I’m awfully tempted to stock up. They have some new styles coming out, such as this all-metal utility knife, but chances are that those won’t be discounted anytime soon.
My current daily-use utility knife is a side-slide Milwaukee, which I bought with a FastBack folding knife as part of a special holiday 2-knife bundle, not unlike those featured here.

The Milwaukee Hardline folding knives are not perfect, but I’d consider them to be better in every way. As they should be, given the price difference.

The blade on the Tanti appears similar very similar to the Gerber . That I have . Very dull cruddy knife . Would not buy this dewalt just because it appears to be related to the Gerber . Get a kershaw if u want a good folder .

$11 is pricey for a knife? You must like cheap Chinese junk. Put you hands on a quality knife and the reasoning will be obvious.

I don’t use chinese junk, I use mainly Mora and Hultafors knives. Guess it is just cultural differences since in Finland nobody uses folding knives like that DeWalt. Google “Morakniv”, that’s the kind of knives we use. You can get a good quality Hultafors knive for 5-6€.

I don’t mind paying more for something that I use everyday. As long as there are added value to the price increase. So $10, $15 or even $100 are all reasonable price for a knife to me.
In this case $15 for two knife seem reasonable to me since I need a utility knife anyway so the extra knife, as Stuart mentioned, will be use as a just in case knife in one of my toolbox.

If possible check out Hultafors HVK GH- knife. It’s a basic Mora-style knife but it has a very nice rubber handle, definitely my favourite knife.

Folding knives are more compact and more easily pocketable. They are also more discrete in work environments where a large knife might look out of place.
Fixed blade knives are also often longer than legally permitted to carry. If you’re carrying a Mora knife on your body in a lot of places, that’s a confiscatable or arrestable offense if you don’t have a good reason (such as if you’re camping, hunting, or actively working).
I’ve had bad experiences with cheap knives, and that had me looking towards better ones.
As price increase, so does the quality of materials. You get a better blade that requires less frequent sharpening, more attention to ergonomics, better pivot technologies, and better handle materials. After a certain point, style is more incorporated into the price. After that, you enter collector territory, where style and knifemaker branding becomes a big factor into the price.
It’s the same with cars, watches, and even clothes. If a daily-use EDC (everyday carry) knife can be easier to use, or provide you with small enjoyment, why not?

I guess you don’t use your folding knives for every single application, since Mora- styled knives are used for finish carpentry, demolition and everything between. It is also quite rare for someone to sharpen a Mora- styled knive, they are usually thrown away when they get dull or damaged. On an other thing: that DeWalt knife has those “slots” or curves on the blade near the handle, what are they used for?

Do you mean the grooves on the back part? That’s typically referred to as jimping, and it can give your thumb a slip-free place to rest or press against.
I guess it also helps when using a knife with a different grip, forefinger forward on the back, for higher precision cutting or scoring.
Sometimes it’s added just for looks.

Was surprised that a mora fixed blade was a top seller on Amazon.
The US has some crazy inconsistent laws, here in Oregon (knife making capital of America with 7-8 of the top brands made here) Switchblades are legal as are most knives and blades, but cross the state line into California and about the only legal knife might be a plastic butter if you want to carry it on your person. It’s crazy some states it a felony to carry a pocket knife in your pocket as it’s a concealed weapon or open carry a fixed blades knife like your mora it can be legal/illegal even be arrested for breach/disturbing peace depending on the LEO.
Even at that price point unless the blade was low in Carbon to hold/maintain an edge to be resharpened quickly and easily I doubt many ‘mericans would dispose of them.
Hence the utility knives with quick change blades or snap-off blades most are a form of a razor blade and .25-.99c each.

Interested in comments about the Dewalt knife as I have been looking into purchasing it. Amazon reviews vary with some liking the previoud version that had a glass breaker on the end and some other differences, yet others like the current version better stating it feels better in quality.

can have a sharp blade! The Dewalt is in the tool bag…just in case.

Yo dumbass…it’s a FOLDING UTILITY knife…its for the trades,plumbers ,electricians, framers,roofers,sidewallers etc…NOT for hunting,splitting logs,etc in the outback…

Had you read all my comments, you would have noticed that I don’t live in USA so obviously I don’t know OSHA rules. Here everybody uses Mora knives for work. I have worked as a tool salesman for about 2,5 years now and not a single customer has ever asked for a folding knife except for camping means. I was mainly wondering on the 50$ price since a Mora knife costs only 5€. I guess folding knives last longer (as I said, basic Mora knives are rarely sharpened). So it’s all about cultural differences.

I use either a fixed or folding blade depending on needs and it seems around here at least, the fixed blade is a toolbox knife and the folder is a carry knife. By that I mean that if the average tradesman has a knife on his person, it is allmost always a folder. The fixed blade knives are kept in the toolbox for heavy duty uses, and the folder is for smaller tasks like cutting cord, opening boxes, sharpening pencils, etc. The folder usually has a clip on it to keep it easily accessible while still hidden inside the pocket. There are some places where you are looked badly upon if you carry a knife in open view, in some places possibly illegal if the blade is more than 3 or 4 inches long, delpending on local code. I hope this helps clear things up a little, Rami.
That said, for daily work use, I have found a carbon steel blade to hold an edge much better than stainless for the price spent, and they seem just a little springier as well. The DW knife is something I probably wouldn’t buy on its own, but if included in a bundle for a couple bucks extra, i mighmight try it.

I had a DeWalt tanto. The latch was fairly weak and the thumb stud snapped off within a couple uses so it ended up getting welded open.

Ace has the tanto for $9.99 right now, jerks had em by the checkout… So I bought one. Haven’t spent much time with it but seems decent for a 10 buck knife. I’ve been carrying the cheap Milwaukee for a year and love it, I’ll carry this too and see how I like it.
