A year and a half ago, Dewalt came out with a number of new mechanics tool sets and wrench sets that were sold exclusively at Sears. That exclusivity expired at some point, and the various Dewalt mechanics tool sets started popping up at other retailers.
Now, Dewalt seems to be expanding their core offerings with a number of new sets. Although technically you could call the new offerings sets, they’re more appropriately described as modules.

There aren’t many details available yet, as Dewalt only recently started adding the new SKUs to their website, but there’s enough to provide some food for thought.

All of the new sets appear to be bundled with a stackable and interlocking case that has a translucent yellow lid so that you can easily view case contents. Irwin did something similar with their newest tap and die sets, and it’s good to see Dewalt build upon that idea. These cases look like micro versions of Dewalt’s mini parts organizer.
It will be interesting to see if the new kits will be exclusive to a particular retailer (Home Depot?), and if the tools themselves boast any improvements over the ones released in 2013.
One thing that still disappoints me is how Dewalt only bundles their mechanics tools as part of sets and kits. Although, if one wants a loose wrench, there are plenty of other Stanley Black & Decker brands that do offer loose tools.

I wasn’t able to find any images of the larger sets, is there any chance that their cases will stack with the Tstaks?

That would be great if they did! It’ll probably take a few more days before images and details start becoming available, but I was too excited about the modular cases for the smaller kits to wait.

Sadly according to the Dewalt website the larger sets are packaged in a regular hard case like the power tools.

Pretty much. That’s how a lot of Stanley Black & Decker brands, and other brands as well, handle warranty claims.

The ones I’ve handled are a bit on the chunky side. That means a little extra heft, but gives me zero doubts as to their long-term durability.

I bought the 204 pc set about a year ago. It was on sale at Sears for $130, and it looked like a good deal, especially after reading Stuart’s initial overview.
I’m not a professional mechanic, so these tools do not get used on a daily basis, but I’ve used them on multiple jobs, including a recent full brake job on my Trailblazer.
They have held up extremely well, and I have no doubts as well in regard to their long-term durability.
They are made in Taiwan. As Stuart said, the ratchet handles are a bit chunky, and heftier than my USA Craftsman ratchets. I’m not sure if it is due to the strength of the alloy Dewalt used. Maybe it’s not as strong an alloy as the Craftsman, and extra material was required to achieve their desired strength.
Regardless of the extra heft (which is hardly noticeable once you begin using the tool), I reach for the Dewalts, as my Craftsman are 36 tooth vs. the 72 tooth Dewalts. I also like the fact that all the sockets (both deep and shallow) are 6pt. That works best for my applications. My old set was mix-match, but still got the job done.

Any idea of the prices of these? I’m very excited about these. I’ve generally been pleased with DeWalt’s prices. I’m such a fanboy, I may buy some of these, even though I don’t need them (I already have a nice set from Kobalt), just to get that DeWalt logo on it…yeah, I’m sad that way 😉

Not yet, but I expect the prices to be in line with what we’ve seen with their other sets. Some of the sets, such as the 8pc wrench sets, seem to simply be repackaged with the new cases.

I was in the Farm & Fleet store in Montgomery, IL last week for work and couldn’t resist at least wandering through the tool department. I seem to remember being surprised to see a decently large selection of individual chrome DeWalt sockets available next to the sets. Of course, the individual sockets don’t appear on Farm & Fleet’s website.

I can see myself buying Dewalt tools but not with Sears. I’m very disappointed in Sears and no matter what they have or sell I will not be purchasing from Sears any more. Now I will buy Craftsman tools in another store such as Ace Hardware.
