I came across a great deal over at Home Depot’s website the other day, where you can buy a Dewalt Deep Pro organizer for $20 and get a free 16-foot tape measure. But when I checked out the purchasing options, there’s no online availability, and only “limited quantity” in stores which disallows online ordering with in-store pickup.
I visited my local Home Depot, and there was no display where you could buy the special bundle.

This screams “holiday promo” to me.
The bonus tape measure, model DWHT33372, is a basic model with a retail value of about $13. But hey, free is free.

There you have it – confirmation that this promo should be available in-store, at the holiday or seasonal section of physical Home Depot stores. Online ordering might eventually be enabled, but your best bet for now will be to stop by your local Home Depot store within the next week or so. My local Home Depot hasn’t started putting up their holiday tool promo displays yet, but they have been slow to do so in the past.

For my small parts and storage needs, Dewalt’s Deep Pro organizers are a bit too deep, and the compartments a bit too large. The shallow version, with Stanley branding, is a bit too expensive for what it offers. This is why this year I bought a couple more of the simpler Stanley 25 compartment organizers from Amazon. In addition to being more sturdily built, the Dewalt organizer also offers Sortmaster-like ability to connect multiple stacked organizers together for easier carrying.
If the free bonus tool part of this promo was instead the new Dewalt mini parts organizer, I would be far more interested. But don’t let me discourage you – I feel this is a great deal, and have been checking the Home Depot product page daily for an availability update. Since, at least for the time being, you have to buy the promo bundle in-store anyways, examine the Dewalt organizer for yourself to see if it’s rightly sized for your organizational needs.

If you like the Stanley 25 compartment organizers, you might want to check out the 20 compartment Harbor Freight version. The pictures look almost identical to me. I’ve got a couple of them and have been quite pleased with them. There are regularly coupons for these items specifically that make them even cheaper or you could always use a 20% or 25% off coupon on them.

I’ve purchased the Harbor Freight version as well. The plastic is not as nice, the as the Dewalt and Stanley versions. Nor is the fit and finish. Also they do not interlock together.

I am a firm believer in SOME harbor freight tools and will swear by them. However anything with plastic molded that depends on the plastic to work correctly I will never trust. I had a kobalt organizer for a while and it worked ‘ok’ for a little while and for $7 it served its purpose. However when compared to this dewalt organizer…. the dewalt is soooo much better it’s ridiculous. I love the removable cups. working with screws and need a lot? just pull the cup and take it with you. the larger cups are so big that it’s where I store my 4.5 grinder disks on a slight angle. And most of all, the items stay in their cups when transported vertically. and with a free tape, it’s a win win. You almost loose money by not buying this combo.

I checked this out once, and another Stanley clone as well. They are nowhere built to the same quality standard. The clones’ bins are more flexible and the cases overall felt less durable. A couple bucks extra makes a world of difference here.

While I understand that a couple bucks can make a difference, sometimes it’s still hard to justify in quantity. I recently agonized (sadly) over portable bin storage like this. Eventually I just got a bunch of the HF containers. I ended up with essentially twice as many as I could afford with the Stanley lineup. I know they aren’t the same quality, but these will be limited use for rarely used fasteners and parts. I am also building a shelf with individual drawers for each container so I have to handle and move the containers less frequently. I’m sizing the drawers so they can accommodate the standard Stanley Sorters or the Fat Max containers in the future if the budget ever allows for the upgrade.
For those fasteners that I will be accessing very frequently and will be lugging around a lot, I bought a couple Bosch L-Boxx 1a’s because I worried about the durability of the Stanley and HF containers. I bought them refurbished from CPO on sale so they were actually cheaper than the Dewalt containers I was looking at. At least now I have compatibility with my 2 other Bosch 12v L-Boxxes. I also plan on making a drawer system for all of my L-Boxxes so I can easily access the contents without having to unstack them and clutter up my bench just to get to a driver or a screw.
Side note: Anyone else notice or wonder why the search engine friendly URL for the HF containers say 19 Bin, but they are listed as 20 bin on the page? Were the previous generations 19 Bin containers and they retained the same SKU?

Yep, certainly have! Those are on my long-term wishlist. They’re Sortimo T-Boxxes. This is the same company that makes Bosch’s L-Boxxes. But the T-Boxxes are very hard to find in the USA, and through that one supplier they’re about $85 each.

For those looking for cheap quality sorting, are these good? Seems like the DeWalt or Stanley boxes with the removable cups would okay. I’ve heard to stay away from the Sortmaster and the HF boxes, but beyond that I don’t know where to start.

I was in HD today and noticed this HDX 15-Compartment Interlocking Organizer. Strangely enough, these are a bit smaller in both width and length compared to the popular Stanley/FatMax design, so I guess they wouldn’t stack well if you’ve got a mix, but they do latch together, and 15 compartments in the smaller area, with some removable partitions, makes them more versatile than the 10 compartment versions around.
I didn’t have much time to investigate, but I did note that these are made from polypropylene, so the see-through top has the somewhat hazy transparency that is the best PP can do, and that at $10 for a pair, they’re about half as much as the brand-name options. The reviews on HD.com are very favorable.

I bought one to tide me over until milwaukee decides they want to release their own version. They don’t have containers, just dividers. There are two colored dividers, the orange dividers are removable, the black ones are fixed. The notches on the lid keeps the items inside from jumping from one divider to the next. So far, fully loaded with nails and screws, they are holding up pretty well, but then again I haven’t dropped it yet. It has four locks, two by the handle and two on the sides (the slide on the side that attaches the cases together locks the lid also). It is not as hard and stiff as the other cases but overall it is not bad for $10 for two cases.

The tape measure offer is not real. I bought 2 of the box+tape combo online and picked it up at the store. The people at Home Depot were totally confused because they didn’t even stock the tape measure nor have a separate sku for the combo – but they had to honor the purchase. So they gave me a 25′ tape measure instead of 2×16′. Two days later they took off homedepot.com.
I also bought the HDX boxes and I think the size of the compartments are better suited for nails, screws and bolts while the Dewalt boxes serves better for parts and larger items like electrical connectors, straps and such.
At the beginning of my organization project I thought I would need more of the Dewalt boxes, but I ended up with 8 HDX boxes and 3 Dewalts and 5 Husky small parts clear organizers. The Husky (even though made in China) seems to be a better build that the Plano boxes that are made in the US.

I was mistaken, the combo is real. I went to Home Depot today to pick up a few items and saw the combo where the non-combo used to be at. I guess these are seasonal.
