If you ask me, I don’t think Dewalt is replacing the 735X anytime soon. They might update it slightly, as they do with other tools, but to replace it? There doesn’t seem to be a lot of justification for that. Maybe there could be one with a helical head, but given the added price, it wouldn’t replace this model, it would be sold as a more premium upgrade model.

The 735X occasionally does go lower. I was kicking myself for not picking one up for $450 around Black Friday, so I’d been watching it and about two weeks ago they were $440 shipped and this time I bit. It lasted only a few days before going back up to $499.

After reading the comments here I immediately regretted my brand new purchase and then telling Stuart about the deal. However, after some investigation, I am confident that $499 is still a good price. Like Stuart, I don’t think Dewalt will be replacing the DW735 anytime soon. If you google “dw735” and click on the news tab there are some interesting results. A company called Questale produced a report in February detailing the global planer market. I don’t have access to the report but according to the NB Post Gazette the planer market is supposed to grow by 20-45% per year until 2022. I have no idea if any of this info is legitimate. If what I stumbled upon is valid, I could see Stanly B&D dropping the price to stay competitive in a “growing” category.
Or maybe Amazon’s supply algorithm just ordered too many for Christmas and they need the storage space for more profitable items that have a higher throughput? All, I know is I got a great planer for a really good price and I will now defend that point to all who dare to say otherwise.

As for the report, I’d never heard of Questale, but I am emailed by research companies all the time, wanting me to provide expert opinions. I learned long ago not to give them an ounce of my time.

Planer related, recently i saw someone has a wide handheld power planer. 6-1/2 or 7″ , I think Bosch or makita. Might have seen it on ebay or amazon. Didn’t know anybody made one larger than 3 -1/4″

Paid $444 for this back in 2013 on another Amazon deal… just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean it’s discontinued.
(I have yet to remove it from the box, amazingly.)

I’ve been gearing up to buy the dewalt 734 planer. I have a 10% in store only coupon to HD (which doesn’t stock the 735x so coupon can’t be used). Is this planer really that much better than the 734? I know it’s 1/2” wider but they both have 3 blades, same rpm, mostly same features. What are you really getting for the extra money? I’m a novice and a hobbyist so I am on a limited budget and I won’t be using it everyday. But I also like to buy quality tools and want to get something that is going to last. So should I buy the 734 for $360 or the 735x for $500 (that extra 140 goes a long way in my newbie shop!)

I’ve had the 734 for 2’ish years and love it. The main complaint of the 734 is its screw-on dust shoot which doesn’t allow you to fold the rear table when in place. Mine fits nicely under a work bench even with the rear table flat, so it hasn’t been an issue in my case.
The main advantages of the 735, aside from slightly increased capacity, is the blower assisted dust extraction and the 2-speed rollers. The cutter head spins at the same rpm, but the 735 has a slower feed option that puts more cuts per inch. The other feed rate is identical to the 734. Also, the 735 has an auto head lock where as the 734 has a manual carriage lock above the cutter that needs to be released and locked after each depth adjustment.
The 735 is probably a better option for production type situations, where you are planing a lot of material consecutively. I’ve read it has better circuitry, etc. to handle longer sustained jobs…but i’ve been around both a lot and they both bog down, heat up, and trip breakers when shaving off significant amounts over and over. They ‘can’ cut 1/8th off of boards per pass, but neither enjoy it all that much, even on not so wide stock.
I too had instore credit at HD and got the 734 for $300. without that, i may’ve waited a little for a deal like this on the 735, but at the time online 735’s were $500+ w/o tables, so 734 it was. Still very happy with it.

Noticed last night the local Lowe’s had cleared out all their inventory of the 735 and had the remaining one at the same price as Amazon. Not as good of deal but interesting. They also had a clearance price on the Porter-Cable planar they stock as well – could just be post-Christmas inventory adjustments I suppose, but maybe there is something brewing with a newer model?

Lowes can be a good deal because you can get cash back, use a 10% coupon, etc… so “same as Amazon” can be a pretty great deal.
That said, our store carried the 735 not the 735X.

I just checked farmandfleet.com and you can order it for 499 as well. There is a shipping charge and it’s dependent upon your zip. I just checked mine out and cost for me would be $33 so not too bad.

Do yourself a favor, get this, put the knives away, and get a 3rd party spiral head upgrade. Night and day difference on noise, performance and easier to keep sharp.
I don’t know why Dewalt doesn’t sell a spiral version of this. They could make a killing in sales with lowest priced portable helical planer. I would grab this up if I didn’t have access to a 24″ already… 😉

I don’t remember who it was, (maybe Keifer/Toolaholic?) but someone told me that they looked into it and learned that Dewalt has seen some burnt-out motors.
I’d considered picking up a cutterhead for my Dewalt test sample planer, but the same $410 (via Amazon) can also go towards a new machine.
