Dewalt has launched a new woodworking scroll saw, model DXVS4502, and it looks to only exist at Lowe’s.

There’s a lot going on here.

First, this is Dewalt’s first scroll saw in like forever. Some of Dewalt’s benchtop woodworking tools are well-regarded classics, such as their DW788. The new model is considerably less expensive, and hopefully isn’t intended to replace the DW788.

Second, it looks to only be available at Lowe’s. The same has been true for their recent workshop sander. So is this some kind of new partnership between Dewalt and Lowe’s?

Features include a 1.6A motor, 18″ throat depth, 45° left and 15° right tilt, 400-1500 RPM variable speed, and gooseneck blower. It’s said to be compatible with both pin and straight blade types.

The DX part of the DXVS4502 model number implies that this is a licensed product, similar to Dewalt’s vacuums, certain cordless outdoor power tools, auto accessories, and electronic accessories. But most Lowe’s shoppers won’t know that – they’ll just see the Dewalt name.

It’ll be interesting to see what else Dewalt launches at Lowe’s. Makers, hobbyists, and really everyone can really use some better benchtop tool options, such as drill presses and band saws.

  1. It looks a lot like the Porter-Cable one that Lowes used to sell. Different color of lipstick.

      • It looks exactly like the Grizzly, which Lowe’s also sells, that’s for sure.

        And to go back to your post about Lowe’s horrible website, if you look at Lowe’s comparison chart of other models on the Dewalt model page, it looks like the Dewalt is better because it has a variable speed control, and the chart claims the Grizzly does not. But the Grizzly DOES have variable speed (with the exact same RPM range as the Dewalt), and even the Lowe’s product description clearly mentions it.

    • I had the old porter-cable one, it was sold when I bought the DW788. They are totally different machines. The later has a cast machined table and swinging upper arm for easier blade changes and operation. The new model has an aluminum bed and aluminum frame. I wonder if they are introducing the new as an economy model or replacing the older model.

  2. I’d love to see a small but very high quality table saw. Mini table saws for hobby use or precision work are a thing but they also tend to be a bit flimsy and have sloppy imprecise fences & miter gauges. I’m thinking around a 5″ blade, but otherwise fully featured like a full-size cabinet saw: precisely machined table with T-slots and inserts (including zero clearance), tilt, quality fence & miter gage with precision adjustment. Variable blade speed would be appreciated. It doesn’t need to be some HP monster but it ought to have enough power to cut hardwood confidently, including small dadoes.

    • isn’t the festool sys 50 saw kind of a mini table saw. I think it uses a 6.5 inch blade or something. It’s really expensive though.

      • That is a fairly small table saw, but it’s designed more for jobsite portability and electronic features oriented more towards convenience. I’d rather something focus on precision and working with small parts, like for building dollhouses, not real houses. Something more like the Proxxon FET.

          • Is that saw still available? Your link gives the impression that the company may just be selling off parts and accessories. The original owner (Jim Byrnes) passed away in 2023

          • No, I have not heard of that, but thank you very much for sharing. That looks much closer to what I’m looking for–sturdy and precise. Alas I think fred might be right, they don’t appear to be available to order. The main page of their website has a popup message stating that for the time being they are only selling parts and that whole machines are not currently available. Which is a pity. Their mini disc sanders also look excellent!

      • I mentioned the FET a couple of posts above. I haven’t had a chance to examine one in person yet, but yes that looks much closer to what I am looking for. I really like how you can tilt up the whole table on the FET for blade changes and cleaning. That said, I have owned other Proxxon mini tools in the past, and I’ve felt that they can be a bit flimsy/underpowered. I don’t want to speak on the FET since I haven’t used it, but I see a lot of plastic on it so I’m not holding my breath.

  3. What do you mean it’s a licensed product? Does Dewalt not actually have a hand in creating this, they just approve another company to use their banding?

    • Dewalt DX products seem to be licensed, meaning developed and marketed by 3rd party companies. The relationships aren’t clear, and there are other products that are made by other companies, such as how Radians makes certain Dewalt safety eyewear.

      • Eyewear is one thing but electronics is another thing entirely. If I buy a dewalt I want it to be a dewalt and not some 3rd party factory in China. Though most of today’s tools are made there anyways.

        • It’s not like they’re putting their brand on crap. They see an opportunity to leverage the brand to sell X Y or Z item, tangentially related to their core product lines. There really just isn’t a need for every brand to R&D their own garbage pail, vacuum tube or folding saw horse.

          I don’t own many Dewalt tools aside from a 12” miter saw, but I’ve still bought some of their licensed stuff because I know it’ll be half decent.

          Fundamentally, they stand behold these products the same as anything else they make, and consumers can trust based on the Dewalt brand that it probably won’t fail, and if it does, they’ll replace it.

  4. Have the advancements in metal cutting circular and reciprocal saw blades made it to scroll saw blade? Is there any scroll saw blade that can handle upto 3/8 ferrous metal? Would be nice for finish cuts after rough cuts on vertical saw.

    • Scroll saws are for intricate work in thin materials; don’t expect to cut 3/8″ steel with a scroll saw, it’s the wrong tool for the job.

  5. I googled image for “Dewalt DX”, the result has a few legit Dewalt products mixed in but did give a pretty good ideal of Dewalt licensed products. Is there way to tell licensed products for Milwaukee?

  6. So, I expect this to be available from Atlas Tools up North of the border here in, likely a Month then. None of those “Exclusives” remain exclusive up here, especially for Atlas Tools.

    • Definitely one of the many upsides of shopping at a real tool store.

      Beyond Rigid, RYOBI etc, I can’t imagine keeping track of what products are ‘exclusively’ available at which home store chains.
