Early Black Friday 2019 Tool Deal: Dewalt 12″ Sliding Miter Saw for $349 (DWS779)

Dewalt DWS779 12-inch Sliding Miter Saw

Dewalt’s DWS779 12″ sliding miter saw is a returning holiday season special buy, and a hugely popular one at that.

The Dewalt DWS779 is very similar to the brand’s flagship DWS780 miter saw, but lacks the pricier model’s LED shadow cut line guidance system. There could be other differences, but they aren’t apparent. I believe I was once told that it’s bundled with a different saw blade.

The DWS779 is a dual bevel saw and can cut 2x wood boards up to 16″ long at 90°.

This saw always gets good reviews, and is generally considered to be an incredibly good value, especially compared to the ~$600 DWS780.

If you want max cutting capacity and high bang for the buck, this is probably the best value miter saw on the market right now.

Sale Price: $349

It’s odd – the DWS779 sliding miter saw was a 2017 Black Friday deal, a 2018 Black Friday deal, and it looks to be a 2019 Black Friday deal as well, yet Dewalt still hasn’t listed this saw on their website.

Prior to the emergence of the DWS779, Dewalt had a different holiday season special, model number DWS782. I honestly couldn’t tell you how DWS782 and DWS779 differ from each other. Perhaps the DWS782 model number suggested it was better than their flagship DWS780 model instead of the other way around, warranting a model number change?

If you’ve used this saw before, what are your thoughts?

It’s been that price at HD almost all year. Lowes most of the last few months. Hopefully it will be under the tree this year!

Local HD has it for $399 with a rolling stand.

Had mine for a while out two years, bought in February of 2018 I believe.

Great saw. Put an 80 tooth blade on it, but the blade on it was fine.

You can also get the parts to make it into a DWS780 for about $80.

I added the parts to mine last year. Really is nice to have the shadow line.

I have also added the parts to mine to make it an dws780. Cheap and easy!

Can you define cheap? I looked into it and it was like $60+.

I’m hoping the parts are a little cheaper than when I looked.

I bought this last year as well at $349 then “returned” it a month later to get the stand as well for an extra $50. Love the saw and the stand is growing on me. As stated, for rough stuff the included blade is fine but I put on a nicer one and it made it so much better. Just my .02¢

Bought one last year during the same price. Must have gotten a dud, what an awful saw. Could never get miters that were accurate. Have a 20 year old Makita that makes dead accurate miters. Gave up on the Dewalt and sold it. I think that the slide had a twist to it resulting in poor miters. Bought the 10” cordless Makita and never looked back.

I am experiencing the same issue in my shop. This is my fourth year using it and I am not a fan. Everything is off about a half-degree because the fence is not true and no matter the blade I use it still struggles to cut. From a capacity standpoint, it is a great saw, but accuracy and power isn’t something to write home about. Across the shop I had a DW715 with a 72 tooth Craftsman blade that was recently replaced but was much older and abused and still cut accurate and clean like no other.

Is this better than the JET miter saw that is for sale at Rockler this week? In general I prefer JET, but want the best quality.

It looks like that’s their new model.

Frankly, the Dewalt is tried and true.

Does anyone make a sliding miter saw that isn’t a combination miter saw?

You mean sliding and single bevel? I don’t think so. Or do you mean something else?
