Dewalt ToughSystem Deal at Costco Holiday 2015

John wrote in about a Dewalt ToughSystem deal he found at his local Costco store. (Thank you for the tip, John!)

The bundle is priced at $200, and comes with:

  • Small Tool Case
  • Large Tool Case
  • Double Drawer Unit
  • Carrier Cart

I have definitely had this conversation with someone before, but can’t find the post or comment thread. Maybe it was via ToolGuyd Facebook messages? P.S. Like us on Facebook and send us some messages, new tool finds, or photos of your gear.

The last time Costco or another warehouse club had a deal on a Dewalt ToughSystem bundle, you only saved more, compared to if you took advantage of the $25 off holiday discount at Amazon and elsewhere, if you wanted the drawer unit. If I recall correctly, the pricing worked out the same or better if you chose a different selection of storage case sizes via Amazon.

Dewalt Small Tough Case

There is one semi-related post, but I don’t see mention of the Costco deal there. But maybe you’ll find the discussion worthwhile anyways:

It’s Time to Stock up on ToughSystem, Tstak, & L-Boxx Toolboxes

Keeping in mind that Dewalt’s $25 off $100+ holiday discount kicked off this week, let’s start by looking at individual pricing:

Dewalt Small ToughSystem Case: $43

Dewalt Large ToughSystem Case: $50

Dewalt ToughSystem Drawer Unit: $65

Dewalt ToughSystem Carrier Cart: $160

Total: $318

So yes, $200 is a great deal!

Unlike in recent years, the Dewalt Carrier Cart is NOT eligible for the $25 off $100+ promo discount at Amazon. So you’re paying $160 just for that.

Bundle the Drawer unit and small case together, and they’re $83 after discount. Add 2 of the large cases together and the cheapest Dewalt accessory you can find, and pay just $75 after coupon, plus the cost of the accessory. Or bundle the large tool box and extra large tool box together ($50 and $58 respectively), for $83 after discount.

Even if you just want the carrier and ANY of the ToughSystem cases that come with it, you get your money’s worth for the $200.

If you already have a carrier, and just want more ToughSystem tool boxes, now is a very good time to stock up.

I love Costco, but what absolutely drives me insane is it absolutely impossible to know if they have something in stock or not without actually going there. Their internet sales are also completely separate from the brick and mortar stores so if you want anything from the internet site it has to be ordered cause it won’t likely be at the locations. Even calling in advanced rarely is reliable enough to make sure they have something there or not. It seems ridiculous in this day and age to not have internet browsable inventory and inventory tracking for your stores on your site.

I’d totally pick this up, but Im guessing its totally dependent on luck wether or not your particular Costco actually has this in stock. 🙁

Maybe pilfering or bad inventory control is at fault – but sometimes I think it is a marketing ploy. If you feign ignorance of (or worse misrepresent ) your store inventory – you might get a customer to come in – with the notion that once you’re in – you’ll buy something . Home Depot also seems to have this issue – online will say that several items are available in a local store – but when you arrive – no one can find them.

I’ve had this experience several times at Home Depot. One helpful employee told me that occasionally the online inventory will say something is in stock if it’s been delivered but not unpacked or returned but not restocked. You have to get lucky enough to find someone willing to take the time to search the upper decks…

I made one mistake in that list. The bottom case is the extra large unit, not the large case. Beats me why they don’t have a medium case.

Riddle me this. Assuming it is within business hours, with customers in the store, how could you have accurate real-time AVAILABLE inventory? You call, they check and have an inventory count of ‘2’. How do you know, without physically checking, if it is in the stocking location or in a customers shopping cart? The same scenario hold true for an online order. It could show an online inventory of ‘x’, but one or more online customers already have the item in their shopping cart. You place it into your cart, proceed to checkout, and, in the meantime, the other online customer have checked out and consumed the inventory.
Systematically, you could place and inventory hold on the item once an item is placed into your cart until checkout is complete (they do this with airline seat reservations), but it is not practical with a retailer. Consumers often leave items their cart without checking out. You could place a one-hour, or some other time limit, timeout, but then consumers would be complaining that a item not available at time ‘x’ is now available 30 minutes later after a cart timeout expires and the item is placed back in inventory.

Many consumers expectations on real-time inventory is not fully thought through or realistic.

The above discussion does not even begin to address inventory inaccuracies due to theft, people moving inventory from the original sticking location and leaving it somewhere else in the store, multiple stocking locations, incorrect sales transactions, etc.

Costco is notoriously bad about it because not all the stores carry the same inventory at all. So even advertising something at Costco as being on sale has no correlation to wether that means all the stores are expected to have this. I’ve been in Costcos where one stocks ham and deodorant and a separate one doesn’t. Costco seems to deal in relatively small orders but displacement isn’t evenly distributed.

Im not arguing over knowing they have 2 or 0 of it at a location, its wether or not and which location will get it stocked at all. If they have a couple, I could deal with someone possibly picking those last 2 up or even them being damaged, but that isn’t what is the issue with Costco. Case in point, they have an incredible deal on a 4ft shop light. They sell a completely different model on the website, not the same as the one “stocked” so ordering online isn’t a possibility. The website also doesn’t have at all the listing of the one “stocked” at the stores so I can’t even call and ask them if they have it in stock because they don’t know the number. I had to resort to finding a forum who tracks this information with people who happen to be at the store and uploads cellphone pictures (including the SKU inventory number), much like this person who submitted the tip in this article. Then proceed to have to call 7 Costcos to find the one that did have the light in stock. Thats a serious pain and a big logistics issue with Costco.

Sure Tool User, I’ll give a you riddle. What do you call it when you go to one Home Depot and talk to a sales person if other stores have a heated hoodie in stock, they check their little handheld and say another location has 5 of that item in stock. You go to that other store talk to the guy that stocks that section and he says they haven’t had that item in any size for 2 weeks?

That doesn’t fit your scenario, that’s just a piss poor inventory system. If you can’t get that right don’t show availability at all to customers or sales people from other stores.

That’s not the only time it’s happened to me. I needed a certain hook at Menards, I talked to a sales person. He looked it up and said store X has 13 of the item in stock. I went to that store and talked to the department manager and she said they NEVER carried that item.

Yes those are rarities, but obviously not rare enough not to happen to me many times.

I think Scott has an insightful comment too about how maybe the item is 30 feet up in the air boxed away. I know when I’ve pressed employees of big box stores, they’ll go and look in storage.

Seems like an incredible deal to me, has anyone picked one up in person. I have wanted to pull the trigger on this system but have not due to cost. Now for almost the price of the cart you get an additional 3 tool boxes. Seems like a cheaper way to buy into the system. Now I just have to figure out how to get into Costco for free, anyone have any luck with the gift cards on ebay?
