Dewalt has a new larger-scale modular tool box system, ToughSystem 2.0 DXL, featuring a 30-inch width.
The Dewalt ToughSystem DXL tool box system is launching with 4 products – 2 styles of drawers, a 4-wheel dolly, and a work top, plus two tower combinations.
- 2-Drawer Tool Box – DWST08520
- Deep Drawer Tool Box – DWST08510
- 4-Wheel Dolly – DWST08530
- Work Top – DWST08550
- 5-in-1 Tower (Shown Above) – DWST60510
- 4-in-1 Tower – DWST60520

Dewalt ToughSystem DXL drawer tool boxes feature aluminum carry handles on the sides, as well as metal rails that look to fit Dewalt’s new Workshop storage system accessories.

Looking at the tops of the tool boxes, the size becomes apparent. These new ToughSystem 2.0 DXL tool boxes look deep enough to fit other ToughSystem 2.0 system components.
We’re waiting for Dewalt to confirm this, but the placement of the latches is very convincing.

The 2-drawer tool box, DWST08520, has a total load capacity of 55 lbs (27.5 lbs per drawer).
Both sizes of drawer tool boxes have ball bearing slides and an automatic quick-latching mechanism.

Both drawers come with removable dividers.

Dewalt also says that their drawers can fit ToughSystem 2.0 tool trays, foam inserts, and tool sets, but it’s not yet clear if they’re referring to their both of their DXL tool boxes, or just the deep drawer.

The deep drawer tool box, DWST08510, has just one drawer for storing bulkier tools and supplies.

It too has removable dividers.

A metal lock bar swings down for securing the tool box contents. From the product images, it looks like the 2-drawer tool box has the same feature.

The ToughSystem DXL 4-wheel cart, DWST08530, has a 440 lb load capacity.
There’s a carrying handle at the front, and latches to fit ToughSystem DXL components and presumably other ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes and accessories.

The ToughSystem DXL dolly has swiveling “tough-terrain” wheels. Dewalt doesn’t specify the caster wheel size, but you can get a sense for their size.
Taking a closer look, they’re plate casters, with 4 mounting points. This is different from how other systems’ cart and dolly casters are installed.

Looking at the front, it’s apparent that all of the swivel casters have locking levers.

Lastly, here’s the new Dewalt ToughSystem DXL 30″ worktop, DWST08550.
There are slots at the sides for hanging power tools and accessories, cup holders, integrated rulers, and also a large side handle. It has a load capacity of 88 lbs.

The 5-in-1 tower combo comes with 2x DXL deep drawer tool boxes, 1x 2-drawer tool box, a dolly, and a work top.
Pricing details aren’t available yet, and the only ETA we were given so far is that the system is “coming soon.”
I’ll post updates as I learn more.
So… what do you think?
Steve
I like the bigger size, but it needs to be campatable with their other systems…
Stuart
I’m waiting for explicit confirmation, but I believe it is.
Looking at the cart, it has lugs for the half-size ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes and organizers. The latch positioning also suggests you can place two full-size ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes on top.
SlowEng
By the looks of it if you attached TS 2.0 drawers they would open to the side of the TS 2.0 DXL drawers. Might not matter if you are doing just tool and part boxes. I guess if they are compatible with TS 2.0 then you could also load tstak boxes as well with the adapter plate, followed by Toughcase boxes. A franken tower of TS 2.0 DXL, TS 2.0, Tstak, and toughcases.
Vards Uzvards
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
ToughSystem 2.0 drawers – yes!
I already want this dolly! And the worktop, perhaps.
Philip+Proctor
Yeah that’s what I’ll do. The dolly and worktop is all I need.
Bonzai
It almost looks like the latch positioning would be only wide enough to support toughcase boxes. Like don’t get me wrong I would love for it to support multiple TS boxes latched on but that looks alot like the size and clearance of the Toughcase/Tstak width. And that would be on brand for shortcomings with dewalt 😛 (sigh)
I’m honestly trying to figure out if you could even attach toughsystem 2.0 boxes to it. As much as I hate to say it I feel like this is a whole new latching system.
The only thing that doesn’t compute is why would they call it toughsystem 2.0 dxl if it doesn’t wasn’t compatable with toughsystem 2.0. because there isn’t a TS 1.0 DXL and that just doesn’t make sense.
I dunno I swear those latches just don’t make sense though …..
And think about how big of a box it would be if you put 2 TS boxes side by side.
I just can’t wrap my head around it
Stuart
These are 30″ wide. I can see them being deep enough for ToughSystem tool boxes. Look at the second image, with the hand grabbing the aluminum rail, or in the middle of the page with a hand lifting a divider out. Look at the dolly and the fold-down yellow lugs for attaching half-width ToughSystem toolboxes.
It’s really difficult to visualize the scale; I also had to convince myself that these are BIG. Given that the width is 30″, the caster wheels look to be 6″ in diameter.
Dewalt also confirmed today – “Yes, there is compatibility with all existing TOUGHSYSTEM 2.0 products.”
Tommy
Is it just me or does it look like you could fit TSTAK boxes back to back (sideways) on these?
Stuart
Two ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes side by side.
I think the visuals don’t accurately represent the true scale. In other words, it’s not just you, and I’m saying you shouldn’t trust your eyes. The DXL system is 30″ wide and fits ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes side by side. My eyes aren’t yet convinced of this, but it’s true.
Eddie
So they are 30″ wide which means it wouldnt fit toughsystem 2.0 boxes the way your making it seem at least to me because toughsystem is 22″ wide. Im thinking tho its length wise they though. Like they 22″ in length and 2.0 boxes would sit sideways while this would sit forward. I hope its like that cuz that would be great. Is that what you mean?
Stuart
There are 4 latches. Each ToughSystem 2.0 box (not DXL) has 2 connection points.
It looks to me that the ToughSystem 2.0 tool boxes can go on top, side by side, meaning the long dimension is front to back with respect to a DXL bottom box rather than left to right.
Big Richard
Here is the explicit confirmation, fresh from WOC – https://www.reddit.com/r/Dewalt/comments/19e4xy0/toughsystem_20_dxl_new_photos/
Hunter Kleiman
I have it. It’s compatible with the rest of dewalt toughsystem
Ron
Snazzy.
Also… dang it.
Matt
Never related to comment so much before, ha.
Ron
These drawers look like they are going to be more difficult (or impossible) to moisture-proof
NoahL
I was really hoping all of these drawers and boxes would be totally waterproof or ip65 at least. I have TSTAK drawers that I’ve been able to mostly water proof with stick on foam gaskets… But I wouldn’t dare leave them outside in the rain!
Tucker
I like the idea of making customized rolling tool carts, say I want the tall drawer on top or similar. But seems like a lot of wasted space if you don’t need to regularly break them down/apart. And if it’s bigger how easy is that?
Jared
This feels like a big development. It’s the missing ingredient to keep Toughsystem relevant now that competitors are launching externally-mounted accessories – something Toughsystem wasn’t designed for.
Matthew
I love welcoming additions to systems no matter what the system is. Allows for innovation but I feel like this is a huge miss for Dewalt. Stick to toughsystem and hopefully we find an answer as to whether or not it’s compatible with previous offerings. Even if it is apart of the toughsystem family it doesn’t appear to add anything in terms of benefits or change.
Ray
Looks like it hase all the toughsystem connectors at the right place.
Seems to me it wil connect to the toughsystem for sure
Stuart
The ToughSystem 2.0 part all but guarantees it.
It’s bigger (2X?) and designed for workshop storage while also being mobile.
jason gloekler
Impressed. I’m a Dewalt guy, but Packout was what I invested in and still feel it was the right decision, especially over the other systems at the time (3-4 years ago).
Stuart
If DXL takes off, we might potentially see Packout XL drawers, it all depends on the target audience.
Shannan Martin
Now the question is…How Much?
Mark
Actually it doesn’t look too expensive. Large tool box with attached Dolly, small toolbox, and small mobile one is under $200.
Stuart
In my opinion, I don’t see the 5pc combo selling for less than $800. My predictions/guesses for *minimum pricing* would be at least $200 for the cart, $100 for the top, maybe $150 for the deep drawer box, $200 for the 2-drawer box. So $200 + $100 + $150 + $150 + $200 for the 5pc combo. This is conservative – the drawer boxes could cost more. I think that the 5pc combo could easily be priced at $1000.
The cart looks to have 6″ locking swivel casters and could be $200 by itself. Drawers are expensive and will need rigidity at this size. There are aluminum components that Dewalt’s smaller ToughSystem drawer tool boxes don’t have, and more complex assembly for the side rails and handles.
The ToughSystem 2.0 2-drawer tool box sold for $99 recently, because Home Depot ordered several units for every store around the country, and online dealers offered the same promotional pricing. DXL boxes won’t have that level of potential sales volume. Double the price would be a bargain. Double the regular price of $129 would be a bargain.
$250 would be a reasonable price for the 2-drawer tool box, $300 seems possible.
The boxes and components will all be large and heavy and incur higher shipping fees.
The system looks very expensive.
*These are all guesses/prediction,* as official details aren’t available yet.
Derek
That all sounds reasonable on the price assumptions. Unless you need the portability it will make more financial sense to buy a traditional 26″ metal tool chest.
Stuart
Yes, or something like the US General full bank cart – https://14cyiuhvcgv.com/harbor-freight-us-general-full-bank-tool-cart-colors-2023/%3C/a%3E .
It will really depend on the user and application.

In my mind, it’s when you go to this larger format that portable/modular drawer boxes make more sense. You are giving up less space to the drawer mechanicals, percentage wise. I wonder if they will come out with a drawer base box that can tilt back and be rolled around on sturdy 10 inch or larger wheels. They are a good looking product. They’d have twice my attention if the drawers were gasketed or weather sealed though.
NoDak Farming
Now I’m looking better at the pics and seeing some little slivers of yellow. Looks like maybe a gasket? That’d be cool.
Randy Conley
Ok so is this out yet or is it in pre production? If it is out where are they selling it?
Stuart
It’s launching later this year.
SlowEng
The most important question about this new release is whether or not the internal dimensions are even multiples of 42 mm.
On a serious note this looks real interesting. Looking to see how well it functions as a modular replacement the big rolling mechanics boxes. Looks similar in concept to the SKS tool boxes.
Doresoom
42mm for Gridfinity?
SlowEng
Yes.
Rog
I like that they’re (relatively) nondescript and purposeful. I don’t want or need my tool boxes to scream “look at me!” The color of Packout is a non-starter for me.
Piper
When is this coming out?
Eliot Truelove
The way this looks is that the Tough system boxes will first onto them the way that the DeWalt small and medium Tough case bit cases fit onto the organizers and adapter plate. This looks awesome to be honest.
Before DeWalt came out with there’s, I designed my own adapter plate to stack the medium tough cases so that they can open up either side just like this seems to do with the tough cases.
I’m guessing you could have the tough system 2.0 cases face each other and open up with the lids toward the outside, or they could be back to back and the lids touch in the middle, making the tough cases be accessible from either side. This is an awesome way to jump up the modular system.
Andrey
Son of a b****
Right after I spent hundreds on the tough system 2.0 boxes
Definitely looks good, but I wish the bottom drawer was deeper
Bob
Looks like a good alternative for commerical construction guys. To many tools to take home every night, needs to be very mobile and able to lock up and get to lunch or bathroom quick.
They need a bottom bin with twice the size. And a top with 2″ lip, maybe with power distribution and usb built in, and battery charger.
Bill Sung
I am just wondering if I can wheel this in and out of my tiny shed. The first system with the L cart was not an issue, but 30 inches may be a pinch for my tiny shed.
Stuart
Turn it sideways to get through narrower doorways?
Tom
I can see these being really popular with on-site maintenance teams. Have a box or two of your go-to tools then some to swap in with specialized tools/supplies for different tasks. Worktop a real plus too.
Matthew
When it comes to the modular platforms bigger isn’t always better. Being limited on space I opted for Tstak drawers along with tradestack two drawer units with the adapter plates to mount Tstak on top in my outer bins on the truck. Love the stacktech but they’re heavier and don’t provide that much more in terms of storage. Packout and stacktech are also way pricier than paying $66 for tradestack drawers during the buy more save more.
I think this system is going to come down to what the price is going to be and where if any availability in stores and not just online.
I just wish they would release a new Tstak drawer that’s twice as deep as the single and still be a single drawer.
Jronman
I noticed two of the locks are red and two are yellow. Maybe there is no difference but it is interesting that the colors would be different. When I first saw the post I was hoping it was the first 3.0 stuff but I was mistaken. Maybe soon we will see an official announcement of 3.0.
James
I think the colours identify swivel and non swivel casters…?
That worktop looks great. I’m customizing my Packout worktops to be larger but this width is so much better as a mobile workstation.
Never spent much on Dewalt but this may pry open my wallet.
Stuart
That suggests all-swiveling casters.
We also don’t usually see locks on non-swivel casters.
James
Hmm good point.
Huge
Pros its shiny and new
Cons the worktop has a lip & looks overall units look cumbersome to deconstruct and put away full loaded. Wide grip isn’t comfortable for long hauls.
Saulac
Added a flip top box on top and they are exactly the ubiquitous 30” toolboxes. Then at some point someone will come up with a plastic 30” toolbox with configurable drawers because they waist less space.
Frank D
I like what I see, and think this could be quite successful, depending on price and it is not safety red ( or orange, etc ) Should be great for those with trailers with a loading ramp.
John
Very interested in how these are compatible with current toughsystem 2.0.
They really look great. I hope the pricing is competitive.
Mnoswad
I like it a lot. Always wanted wider modular portable tool storage. This could be a good system for quasi permanent van racking too.
Now can Dewalt just make a 4 caster dolly for the regular tough system already so I can pick between tough built or dewalt systems.
Philip+Proctor
I’ll get a couple DXL dollies to roll my toughsystem boxes around. Maybe the work top too. I don’t need the bigger DXL drawers.
Bill Sung
Does anyone had a $ price estimate on the 5 level setup? Maybe comparable to the Milwaukee Packout system?
Stuart
I would say it will cost considerably more than the Packout system. The ToughSystem DXL products are double the size and look much more robust.
At this time, the Packout dolly is $100 and work top $55. Let’s assume that 1- and 2-drawer tool boxes would cost $120 and $150 each, respectively. That would be $545 for a Packout 5pc tower. The DXL combo looks to be the equivalent of 2X Packout 5pc towers in size.
Matthew
Definitely agree with the much higher pricing needed for something this size. The photos don’t show the scale very well except for seeing the hand grabbing the handle and the toughsystem locking points.
Daniel
I guess tstak is dead? I should give up hope for a xl deep drawer or cabinet style box
Stuart
Tstak is very much still available, but I don’t see XL deep drawers or cabinet style boxes happening.
MM
Unrelated heads-up: I was just at my local McCoy’s, and they had quite a bit of Milwaukee Packout marked down with clearance pricing. I don’t know if it was just in my store or if this affects all McCoy’s but it might be worth looking at if there’s one near you and you’re looking for Packout.
Another Bob
I think I’ve said it before but these plastic injection molded boxes must be highly profitable. Everybody and their cousin has one now lol.
I like that DXL is bigger and I like drawers but if the drawers sag with only moderate weight, like the Tough system, I see these new DXL being useless. Hopefully some sort of reinforcement honeycomb or other material to stiffen them.
I’ll hold off judgment until I see price and get to play with them in person. I can see one of the small Job Boxx, Knaack etc doing the same thing. Not as organized (no drawers) but for presumably cheaper, more secure and potentially more weather tight.
I wonder if this is compatible or will be offered with a van racking system like the tough system racks?
JoeM
Thank You for the Article, Stuart!
You know me, I have to be bluntly honest here… DeWALT here has finally crossed the line where I genuinely couldn’t possibly see myself using it, but am very happy they’re doing it. Doing this, and the new battery system for Concrete use… DeWALT is super sizing their products, and I am very glad they are!
I also noticed that these new ToughSystem cases are approximately the same size ratio to ToughSystem 2.0, as TSTAK boxes are to the TSTAK XL Cart. They’re going by a nice golden ratio there, which promises some great balance! Super sized TSTAK for extremely heavy use. Whereas ToughSystem 1.0 was dependent on those rails to keep together. Interlocking systems are a lot more efficient than the rails, especially if someone is injured and has to pack their stuff up to go home. Far easier to just stack things, than it is to try and line up the rails, even keeping the rails a possibility for versatility, which is also a wonderful feature. Not a system I can see myself using, as I’m of much smaller scale, but I can definitely see the value!
Tying things together… The new super sized battery system, now using Watt-Hours as the measurement, rather than Amp-Hours or Unit Watts Out, is a first for DeWALT. But I finally see what DeWALT is doing. Super-Sizing the systems to prep for the bigger tools coming. And as noted in the battery article, I would genuinely love to see some side-by-side stuff between the new MX Fuel Forge Batteries (Atlas Tools is already selling them on Preorder, so I’ve seen the images.) And whatever the new PowerShift batteries are running inside. Something I’m betting is based on the Pouch Cells like PowerStack… Even similar names at that!
I don’t usually side with Milwaukee over DeWALT, but on this latest wave of containers and Pouch Cell Heavy Duty systems, I am. MX Fuel Forge, and the latest Packout additions (as tiny as they may be, drinking tumblers and a few holder plates, the odd half-size box.) Seem to be more developed than DeWALT’s PowerShift battery system (which still has an adapter for FlexVOLT, holding onto that system.) And this even-heavier-duty ToughSystem 2.0 DXL case system. The two are very close, but I’m giving an edge to Team Red for the first time.
Thank You, Stuart! Your reporting actually made both articles make sense to me, once put together!!
eddiesky
Dimensions? Even Dewalt doesn’t have them! https://www.dewalt.com/product/dwst08510/toughsystem-20-dxl-30-deep-drawer
Once again I will ask why Dewalt sells something like a floor nailer but no case, or storage that is can fit.
30″ deep? Well, is it 30″ x 30″ if you state the system 2.0 is 30″ Wide?
“Dewalt has a new larger-scale modular tool box system, ToughSystem 2.0 DXL, featuring a 30-inch width.”
Because the nailer takes up 23″x 23″ if 30″ deep and wide… could work.
Stuart
More details will be available when the system launches later this year.
While no dimensions are published for the depth yet, it’s not going to be 30″.
David Funk
tough cases are roughly 22 inches wide so I would say it’s gonna be 30 wide by 22 inches deep…
Ray
This might be just what I am looking for. As my tool collection increases, I am realizing TSTAK/Versastack is too small a footprint for larger tools and sets that I would like to keep together. While a normal rolling tool cabinet would better fit my sorting preferences, I move frequently and have no desire to load a full cabinet into a truck every year or two. With a few of these drawers I can have a large home bay and keep some of my Versastack-clad tool sets easily portable for projects away from home.
Matthew
Can definitely see these as more of a shop set-up. I love Tstak single drawers and I’ll fit whatever tools I can into them. Then I have the adapter plate and tradestack two drawers for longer tools, then I have the large handle Tstak for nail guns because I can store the nails in the lid. I have some of the crates for circ saws, etc.
Then I have some half size Packout ammo cans for router and bases, one for framing nailer, organizers for specific printed tool inserts.
I feel like there’s no one true system and having a few systems helps.
Nathan
I bet this is coming to Mac tools pretty soon
Carl Russell
I hope that it’s compatible with existing, would not make sense otherwise you may as well try out other manufacturers kits
César
It’s still coming soon! What’s the meaning of “comí soon” for DEWALT?
Stuart
Officially announced but no concrete shipping date yet.
