Dewalt ToughSystem Mechanics Tool Set Dropped in Price and is Now Shipping (11/10/19)

Dewalt ToughSystem Mechanics Tool Set

If you recall from our recent post, Dewalt has come out with a new DWMT45226H ToughSystem mechanics tool kit, featuring 3 removable trays full of tools, a top tray, and a ToughSystem tool box. Thanks to an email from Aaron, we now know that this kit has dropped in price, to $149.

Okay, we all know that the price change from $229 to $149 doesn’t really constitute a “drop,” since $149 is most likely the holiday season pricing that Home Depot and Dewalt had intended for all along.

Still, I can’t help but feel that this is still a deal. Technically it is a deal, it’s a special buy, with these two magical words conveying that this tool set is priced lower now than you could buy it for most of the year.

A 226pc Dewalt mechanics tool set with ToughSystem tool box for $149? That seems like a pretty good deal.

There’s still no listing of what you get with this set, but hopefully these images help give you a good idea:

The set comes with 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ drive ratchets, drive accessories and adapters, a selection of shallow and deep sockets, some wrenches, hex keys, what looks to be a screwdriver, and a selection of 1/4″ hex screwdriver bits.

It’s a little of this, a range of that.

Personally, I’d probably load the trays into a tool drawer somewhere and use the ToughSystem tool box for other things.

This looks to be an interesting choice for DIYers, homeowners, and others who want a nicely-equipped mechanics tool set. At least I’m assuming it’s nicely equipped. A rundown of the kit contents would really help here.

Price: $149

P.S. I hit the nail on the head with my pricing prediction. If I may remind you:

It’ll be interesting to see how much the set sells for come late November. I think that a $149 price tag would be very fitting, but that’s just a guess.

If you want something a little different, check out this Craftsman 216pc mechanics tool set with Versastack tool box. As you might be aware, Dewalt and Craftsman are now owned by the same company. It would curious to see how the quality compares.

    Not impressed.

Wrench selection is lacking. To many bits. No ratchet adapters. The need to pull out trays to get to what you need.

I would be more inclined to get a Toughsystem and piece meal together myself what I need.

I think the DEWALT DWMT75049 is the absolute best set available for someone whom is starting their tool build-up from scratch. (Currently $178 Amazon and Home Depot) It has the best selection of sockets (all 6 pt) standard and deep in all 3 drives. These already made sets usually throw in a lot of fillers to increase tool piece size offered but you really have to look at all the pieces with scrutiny. The DEWALT DWMT75049 has no wrenches included which is great as you can pick up wrench sets any time especially during the holiday season. When you purchase a combo set like this one displayed to build your tool set you will pay more in the long run having to purchase missing sizes in both sockets and wrenches and we all know purchasing tools in single is expensive! My advice, purchase the DEWALT DWMT75049 and you have sockets for life, great assortment of extensions and then separately purchase the largest piece wrench sets you can afford in both metric and sae and you are on your way to a fine tool build!

This set would be great for perhaps a secondary set or mobile set if wanted.

After looking at that Dewalt set Diamond Dave referenced, I agree that is a much better value. $30 more bucks and a much more comprehensive socket set.

The DEWALT DWMT75049 set occasionally goes on sale. I purchased the set last month for my son (starting his tool collection) for $139 shipped and then added a metric and SAE polished wrench set along with a set of the Milwaukee screwdrivers. I will be keeping my eyes out for a decent quality priced pliers set during the holiday season for him.

I got mine today, thank you Sunday delivery by FedEx that was a welcome surprise. I agree with all the criticism about more wrenches and drawer over stacks. But if you’re like me and advanced DYI person who needs a good assortment of sockets from time to time and you have an open slot in your tough rack. I say it’s good. Made in the USA, everything is well organized. Has what I need and I’m sure a lot more. So far I’m very happy with the purchase.

This set is made in the USA?

I have a lot of Tough System, I was thinking about adding this, and US made would put me over the edge.

Content wise the Craftsman set is better IMHO…. 2 3/8 and 1/4 extensions versus the 1 of each size with the DeWalt set and 2 Spark Plug sockets VS the 1 with DeWalt. Also the Craftsman set give you more wrenches and a much nicer screw bit handle. it looks like the Craftsman set has more deep sockets as well….hell 55 pieces of the DeWalt set are bits…

Also the Craftsman ratchets can be disassembled for cleaning, not so with the DeWalts.

The Dewalts are a tad bulky also but ratchets are so common nowadays these are easily replaced or upgraded. I have original craftsman USA made ratchets from 25+ years ago and have only opened and re-greased them once. I don’t know the quality of the current made in China Ratchets however as I stopped purchasing most Craftsman when they went over seas. Yeah I realize most other tool manufacturers now are also overseas but I am happy with my 3-4 different sets of DEWALT wrenches as far as quality, fit and finish.

The Dewalt set is perfect for someone that wants to have a pretty comprehensive set of tools to throw in their truck or car for trips.

To be clear which if any set is USA made? The 226pc Dewalt tough system mechanics tool set in this blog post model number: dwmt45226h or the blow molded 192 piece set mentioned in the comments: model DWMT75049?

The tough system boxes I thought were made in Israel? They have been out for a few years now so no sure if that has changed.

Maybe only the tool box? Some ToughSystem tool boxes are made in Israel, others in the USA, although I didn’t think this one was made here.

I think the Husky 268 piece @$130 for black Friday is the best bet for an inexpensive starter set, it’s complete no-skip from 8-18mm, for both wrenches and sockets, and similar for SAE. The only downside to the set is the 1/2 sockets are 12 point. But as a pro mechanic said, if you’re worried about that go for your 6 point impact set of 1/2 inch anyways.

The husky 268pc is currently $99 at Home Depot.
