DFM Roundover Card Scraper

DFM Tool Works has launched a new fully machined card scraper in two sizes that’s designed for use on rounded-over wood edges.

It can be used for a variety of edge treatment tasks, and is presently less than $8 on Amazon with Prime shipping.

According to DFM Tool Works, they created the new card scraper to:

  • Easily remove round over router bit burns
  • Shape your edges to a consistent radius by hand
  • Get creative with a tool you didn’t know existed!

I think I would treat this more as a clean-up or final finish tool. I usually shape edges with a plane or router bit, and sometimes a bit of tear out requires a tiny bit of sanding. I can see how it can be used to scrape away a cosmetic burn or similar.

There are 2 sizes – small with radiuses from 1/8″ to 5/16″, and medium with radii from 3/8″ to 3/4″. Each has 4 edges with size clear markings.

DFM says that these scrapers are made from 0.032″ thick American blue spring steel, and are burnisher-friendly (not included) when edge maintenance is needed.

Sale Price: $15.99, or $7.99 after clickable coupon.

The scraper looks similar to the one included in their 3pc set, but with the corner radiuses cut via CNC and with size markings added.

It’s odd that DFM Tool Works launched the new scraper on Amazon with a 50% clickable/clippable coupon code, but they explain that they’re trying to establish a storefront there, or something to that affect.

Don’t forget, you’ll need a burnisher. You don’t have to get a burnisher, but you also can’t use most modern screwdrivers if they’re not hard enough.

$8 is pretty good for a USA-made scraper, let alone one with specialty shapes cut into it.

I’m not sure I’m in for one, but I’ll at least give it some thought. I like the idea of scrapers, but I don’t really use them. I don’t have enough trouble with clean and consistent roundovers and have never looked into any remedies, but this looks like it could be useful, and it’s under $10.

If I don’t pick it up now, I’ll keep an eye on it for later. I think I should use my general purpose scrapers a bit more before I buy specialty ones.

Can you see any other uses for this? I wonder if it can be used to clean up wood dowels, or similar. There are times when I need to shave just a little off, but there’s always sandpaper for that, or a file.

I wondered if this would be good for easing the sharp edges of woodworking projects, but it seems better suited for cleaning up edges than shaping new ones.

The offer ends on “April 28th or when supplies run out.”

Unfortunately, it looks like you can only use the coupon once. If I add both sizes to my cart, the discount only comes off of one of them.

Thank you to Fred for the heads-up!

Picked one up, thanks. Card scrapers are great, and not hard to sharpen. They get hot during use though. These should be good for cleaning up machining marks from routers.

I was able to get the coupon to work twice by breaking the order up into two separate orders. Thanks for the heads up, Stuart!

      Thank you! Good to know.

That’s like buying both for what just one size will be priced at when the coupon ends.

I have DFM (cabinet scraper set) and always forget a burnisher! Also have one of their center setup squares. Figures, tried to get a scratch-dent burnisher and sold out. Nuts.

Thought that was what sandpaper was for. Can’t imagine scrapper doing better. Yes, I use scrappers, ..a lot, irreplaceable in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing this (and thanks, Fred!). I just picked up both sizes (separate orders for the coupon on each). I don’t remember seeing a ready-made concave scraper available unless maybe Veritas had one at some point. Looks like they’ll be able to be used on 95% of the corner rounds. Scraping beats abrasives a hundred times over except on the very softest of woods (where you probably wouldn’t be using a router anyway). I’ve resorted to some homemade scrapers from straight putty knives and banding steel (neither ideal) or just a knife, and very often used the rubber forms with sandpaper but these look like a nice and compact solution, and I’m sure the straight edges can be used as well.

I’m glad this company survived the pandemic and seems to be doing well. I was not real happy with either of their small squares that I received (definitely not machine-quality but fine enough for woodworking) but I got their small triangle square as a gift and that one is spot on. I probably shouldn’t have been, but I was surprised at HOW FAST the various Chinese copycats appeared on the market. Must make it very challenging for DFM to stay competitive and profitable although the copies are not that cheaply priced as these things used to be in the past.

Luthier scrapers work well for other small projects dealing with highly figured wood.

I received the small radius version today…large should arrive tomorrow. Ran some quarter round on scrap and I have to say this tool works very nicely. I don’t know if it’s intentional or not (can’t think of a good reason) but three of the four have one “corner” at a slightly different radius than its mate and the two smallest have either an oops or extra relief on one corner. But they all work really well, good tool worth having. I’ll get more use out of the large. If I’d known that Lynx quarter style existed I would have bought it years ago – most of the others out there have a half radius or a little less but aren’t suitable for quarter round.

I’m glad I got these and you took the time to share it with us!
