Over at Amazon, this Dremel 3000-series rotary tool kit is on sale, today only, for $45.

This kit comes with 2 attachments, a sanding and grinding guide, and a cutting guide. I’ve never ever used the grinding guide, but then again I’ve never had to spruce up lawnmower blades or things like that.

It also comes with 28 rotary tool accessories for a mix of cutting, grinding, sanding, and polishing capabilities.

Everything is packaged inside of a hard shell case.

Price: $45

They say the “was” price is around $68.

There’s no flex shaft, which can come in handy for higher precision work. Also absent is Dremel’s EZ Lock mandrel and accessories, which are easier to change than the common screw-based mandrel system.

You can always add these items later on after you’ve went through some of the consumables.

This kit looks to be a good starter set, and at $45 it’s far more affordable than the 2 sets I bought in the early to mid 2000’s.

The 3000 series rotary tool is a nice model, and has an EZ Twist collet wrench, where you use the removable nose cone for accessory changes.

If you want something a little more powerful, there’s a 4000 series rotary tool kit for $68.

The deal ends at 3am 11/22/2016, unless supplies run out sooner.

So when I clicked the above link to take a look at the dremel on amazon, this other, similar but much cheaper item was shown: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B003BYRFH8/

Are dremels really worth the higher price?

There’s also a cheap Genesis model, and I’ve seen other no-name clones.

Good bits and consumables can be more impactful the the choice of tool.

If you’re buying something for one quick project, it might not make a difference. But if you’re buying for regular use, Dremel is the only brand that I’ve seen that actually tries to innovate with their rotary tools.

I haven’t done head to head comparisons, but I’ve always put faith in Dremel’s long-standing reputation.

My Dremel 280 still works after decades of use. I bought a more ergonomic model 395 about 15 years ago – probably on one of these Black Friday deals and a cordless 770 some years later to trim (grind) the dog’s nails. They all still work.

Then a bought a Foredom motor/flex shaft and handpiece 4 years ago and now I’m hooked on the Foredom (have 2 motors an several handpieces) and almost never use the Dremels except when transportability is an issue. While none of my carving will ever make it to a museum or decoy exhibit – the Foredom setup is so much easier to use than a Dremel-type tool.

So, I think that I’m endorsing the Dremel tool and brand – but if you want to use it for long periods at a carving or craft bench – you might be better served with a flexible shaft machine – and I’d recommend Foredom if you wallet can accommodate it.

I have a cordless dremel 8200 model. It has been good to me for the occasional household duty type of work that I throw at it. It has never felt underpowered to me.

The cordless convenience is nice and the variable speed work well.

I think Ace has this at $39.99, not sure if it has the same accessories though.

That’s the same tool, but with a more bare bones accessory assortment.

For $5 more, this is a much better deal. Just the cutting guide more than makes up the difference.

I picked one of these up for the students to use! Thanks for the heads-up!

Stuart, I did get the last message you sent me and will reply when I have the account un-frozen. I had a student trying to guess the password on it and the account got frozen for too many failed attempts. I am sure it will be fixed shortly, so will reply later today after classes are finished.

Ah, I was wondering what happened!

I did see that your Amazon gift card was redeemed, and am ready to send over the others as soon as you I hear from you. Well, I might need a few days before I have a free moment.
