Acme Tools Fathers Day Discount 2020

Over at Acme Tools, they have a good Father’s Day promo this year – save $20 off $100+ eligible tool orders.

There are some exclusions – fewer SKUs than usual – and I’m glad to report that the coupon code works on Milwaukee preorders as well, notably their new M12 radio + charger, and the new Milwaukee Packout cooler tool box.

For the radio, the coupon takes $20 off the price instantly, and you’ll need a filler (such as screwdriver bits or what-not) to raise the price of the cooler order over $100.

Shipping is a flat $6.49, or free on $199+ orders.

I wish that the free shipping threshold was lower for this promo, but what can you do.

Coupon Code: DADSDAY20

There are some other deals going on right now, such as a Dewalt “buy 2 bare tools, get a free 20V Max 2-battery and charger starter kit” promo right now. While those promos won’t stack with the $20 off $100+ promo, they at least do contribute towards meeting the free shipping threshold.

Deal ends 6/11/2020.

I guess I’m jaded by a constant bombardment of these little deals but do they really cause much of a buying frenzy?
It’s basically $10 off of a “retail” value of $199. Huh?

I saw this deal earlier but forgot about it. What alerted me to the deal the second time was seeing affiliate purchase activity when checking something in the back end.

Acme is one of the few affiliate partners where I can see model numbers of what’s purchased, and I saw a sale of the new radio for $99. I remember the radio being priced at $119, and checked the page to see if and how it’s being discounted already. Then I saw the coupon mention and remembered the newsletter mention.

Let’s say you wanted that new radio. $105.50 after shipping but excluding tax (or around there) is still better than $119.

$20 off a $500 isn’t as good, but it’s still the best deal around these days. There’s also no guarantee that an item eligible for this deal will be eligible for a different and potentially better deal later on.

At least one person saw value in the deal, and I figured there would be others and it was worth a heads-up.

Will there be better deals in the next 6.5 months before the end of the year? That’s very likely. But this is a good deal nonetheless.

I ordered two products from BladeHQ last week. This week there are “free bonus with purchase” offers, and I bought a few more items from my “when a better opportunity arises” shopping list.

When you need to buy a tool, or want to get in on a preorder, $20 off $100+ is better than no discount at all.

I’ve learned that some items are more timely to purchase, others can wait for any discount, and some are best put off until the best one or two deals of the year.

I wouldn’t have posted about the deal if I didn’t think it was worthwhile. If a deal post isn’t interesting or beneficial, it doesn’t help anyone.

These kinds of offers probably don’t affect regular sales much, but they probably do generate buying from people who only buy stuff on sale or who might otherwise not buy something they don’t really need.

So, they probably don’t cause a frenzy, but they do have the intended effect of selling more stuff.

It’s just something you kind of need to do in retail to stay competitive. If you’re a retail business and never have any sales or promos and just expect people to buy everything from you at regular price, you’re probably not going to do very well versus businesses that constantly do promos and have sales and coupons, especially around tool-buying holidays like Father’s Day, Black Friday, Christmas, etc.

        It’s also a competitive strategy.

Let’s say you wanted to buy the Milwaukee radio right when it comes out. A deal like this will compel some users to buy it early and to buy from Acme instead of a competitor.

Retailers can see the effectiveness of different promos. While they might experiment from time to time, they know what works.

Promos can be used for competitive advantage, but also to drum up sales during slower periods.

Also, regarding this deal, while there are brand-specific $20 off $100+ deals and similar, this is one of these times when you can get a similar discount on a group of different brands’ products. It saves money on a collection of smaller items, or tools that are rarely discounted, including new releases or preorders.

      Me too. I’m not impressed.
This seems like a Father’s Day deal – and a bit wimpy at that.

I have 3 Milwaukee items on my Acme wish list for Xmas gift giving – one is $199, one is $399 and one is $2629 – so I’ll wait to see if they (or ToolUp, MaxTool etc.) run a 15% off deal between now and Christmas. The $2699 (mag drill press kit) may never get a full discount – but $20 off doesn’t come close

Wouldn’t a Zoro 20-25% short term discount be good for your mag drill?

Maybe if they combined it with the over $49 shipping is free they run during other sales this might be more of a deal.

Agreed. But having spent money to ship tools and seeing what it costs, I can’t blame them.

This is in essence about a 13.5% off deal of $100, due to the shipping costs. So, items totaling at $101 was around $87.50 plus sales tax for your state. Worked in my favor for a couple of items like a saw blade, drill bit drivers, etc. The more over $100, the less the value. The total for me was about 10% off “A” prices with free shipping.

Has Zoro stopped their good sales…… haven’t seen one in a good while.

The better deals are less frequent.

Add something to the site when signed-in, or browse around, and they’ll send you a “oh, please place your order, here’s a coupon” email for 15% sometimes. Of course that usually comes after I place a time-sensitive order.

Long gone are Zoro’s 30% off deals – sometimes with prices on things like welding machines that seemed like they were close to or below cost.
The staggered (depending on $ purchase thresholds) 15-20-25% off deals seem to have faded too. Maybe COVID has pushed up their costs and they figure that need the extra markup built into their normal prices.
