Acme Tools has a fine price on this Fein MultiMaster MM 500 Plus Q-Start oscillating multi-tool set.
Fein has a lot of different MultiMaster 500-series OMT tool kits, and this one stands out as being an especially good value for the price.
It comes with the Fein 500-series tool, which features a 350W motor and Starlock Plus mount that works with Starlock and Starlock Plus blades and accessories.

Fein advertises that the MultiMaster 500 delivers “minimal vibration.” It also features a metal drive head and 16-foot rubber-clad power cord.
This kit comes with “more than 25 accessories” – a sanding pad with 5 each of 60, 80, 120, and 180 grit sandpaper, a rigid scraping blade, curved saw blade, and 4 more cutting blades include a Carbide Pro.
It comes with a hard plastic tool case.
Acme lists the country of origin as Germany.
Price: $150
Shopping around, other retailers have the same set for $250.

It looks to me that Fein is launching the same tool in different configurations with orange-color L-Boxx tool cases, and so perhaps this is more of a clearance-type deal than a regular promotion.
There’s another Fein MultiMaster 500 tool set at the $150 price point, with the same tool, 3 blades, a sanding pad, 3 each of 4 different grit sizes, and a soft tool bag. I think the deal above gives you considerably more for the same money.

$150 is a very good deal for a genuine Fein unit. My first oscillating multi-tool was a Harbor Freight cheapie that worked, but about vibrated my hand to death. Gave that one away quickly. Next was a Dremel which was a vast improvement and it went to my son when he redid his bathroom. Next was a Makita which I still have and use at one location. I had an opportunity to purchase a used a used Fein at a great price. The Fein is the smoothest and lowest vibration of them all and I use at a second home. If I didn’t already have a Fein, I’d jump on this deal pronto.

It’s a great deal given what Feins usually cost and their excellent quality but I just can’t get past the cord.
My first OMT was a corded Dremel I received as a gift. It really opened my eyes as to what you could do with an OMT….but the cord was a hassle from day one. It did not take long before I purchased a battery powered one. In my opinion the OMT is a tool that benefits more than most from being cordless because it’s so often used for quick jobs or in tight spaces.

Ditto.

I have to agree with both you guys. Cordless makes these things so much more useful. I am sure the Fein is a great tool, but…

I wish I’d not become so attached to battery powered versions. Darnitall.

I used this tool back in 02-04 for removing auto glass, very smooth but did require an inverter while mobile.
It is a great price ,but I have a few issues with this tool.
An omt is probably a most often bought cordless tool ,only behind the impact and drill….rarely does it get used for long continuous usage, or even at 1 location.
Starlock is nice to have, but blades are expensive, and with the longer stroke of several other brands… I don’t find that it cuts any faster.
In the end this is one of the few handheld tools you can pass on to the next generation .
James
I don’t know about cutting speed but I personally love the Starlock system. Granted blades are a little more expensive so I buy them in bulk but the speed of swapping blades for different materials or tasks is awesome.

Seems like a really good deal considering the OEM Fein blades included are pretty expensive to buy on their own.

I’ve had two of the Fein 500s and they are worth the price. This looks like a really good deal, especially considering they rarely go on sale. I like the quick change Starlock blade system and for what I do the cord is not really an issue. I’ve used co-workers’ Harbor Freight and other cheaper OMTs and there’s really no comparison.

I’m going to pick up another for 150. Sure, cordless ones are the way to go for a quick problem solve, but if you need to cut plywood flush to cabinets, you will want the cord.
Or you could could use a toe kick saw, but be careful.
Cords aren’t dead yet, when you are using tools to make a living….same as air.

I feel the same way about routers and sanders. Sometimes you just need a cord, and you can do a lot with a 15A outlet.

I bought one of these a couple years ago and wow, it is the best OMT I have used, hands down. I have a couple cordless units (Yellow and Red) and they don’t hold a candle to this one. Obviously, the cord is the downside but I grab this one for any jobs that takes more than about 30 seconds. The vibration damping alone is worth it.

If anyone is looking for the cordless version, Coastal Tool has the AMM500 w/ AmpShare battery for $179.

Last year I bought the AMM700 Max top set with the whole 9 yards for $400 from them.
Stuart
Acme also has it for $180.
Not bad for cordless with a battery and charger.

Out of stock at Acme Tools today. Lesson learned, shouldn’t have waited. With arthritis in my hands, I’m on the lookout for low vibration tools.

These are back in stock. I just ordered one. Thanks for the post and for the helpful comments.
Andrew
Are these compatible with all blades/accessories, or are they only compatible with the more expensive starlock systems?
Stuart
Only compatible with Starlock accessories.

I received mine yesterday. I like the case. The locking mechanism for the blades is a little sticky, but it seems to be freeing up after a few cuts.
I checked the date on my older fein (fmm250q)…2011. That thing has been going forever. The newer one is definitely smoother. Not sure about the star lock as of yet, but it’s a well built tool.
Good deal, IMO. I paid more than that in 2011.

I got one because of the great reviews even though I didn’t have a use for an OMT 🙂
The case is bigger than I had imagined!
