Gerber Groundbreaker Multi-Tool

Gerber recently announced its new Groundbreaker multi-tool (31-001440), a robust model designed for electricians. The Groundbreaker features industrial-grade wire cutters, wire strippers, locking utility knife, locking drywall saw blade and driver with 6 interchangeable screwdriver bits. It comes with a heavy-duty belt sheath and 5 knife blades.

The Groundbreaker is about 9″ long when open and 2.85″ wide. It is mostly composed of 420J stainless steel, and appears to have a black oxide finish. Are you wondering where the utility knife, drywall saw and bit driver are? The Groundbreaker’s handles are detachable!

MSRP has not yet been announced, but according to preorder details, street price should be about $105. The same preorder pages mention that the Groundbreaker is made in China.

Meh. Not worth the premium price in my mind. I’d rather have several dedicated tools and not be dependant upon one.

It does look like a neat design, but >$100 seems like a lot to pay for an imported tool. I’ll reserve judgement for the time being until I can see it in action.

Northern Tool and Supply carries the Klutch brand electrician’s multitool for around $17. With discount coupons you can get it cheaper. Virtually the same tool for one fifth the cost…. Yadda out.

How is that the same tool? Because it has wire strippers?
It doesnt have a razor blade. It doesnt have strong pliers. It doesnt have a bit driver. It doesnt have detachable handles (which make the razor and bit driver ACTUALLY usable you know?)
And the build quality is not even remotely comparable.

So yeah the gerber is a little more expensive that we’d like, but comparing pears and apples doesn’t make a point.

For that price, buy the Paladin “Power-Play” Multi-tool made by SOG.
High quality, all the blades are replaceable.
    Cost about $120.00 @ Fry’s Electronics.
